The_Original_Roxtar: jso2897: BrotherMalcolm: Didn't Gore, Obama render this award a joke?

The_Original_Roxtar: The Nobel Peace Prize is a farce.
2012: the European Union.
2009: Obama
2007: Al Gore

Oh absolutely - a lot longer than that. They gave it to somebody I don't approve of back in the seventies -- and I'm some guy on the Internet, and as you know, any award given to anyone I don't approve of is forever after rendered a joke and a farce.

way to miss the point.
the peace prize is meant to celebrate those who have furthered the cause of peace in the world.

2012, the EU... rampant riots over financial issues.
2009, obama... he'd been on the job a week and had accomplished precisely: Dick.
2007, gore... GLOBAL WARMING BAD! HERE SLIDESHOW

compare these people to the likes of the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, the peace corps...

It's almost like half their recent nominees are there to troll the American right wing. Could be on to something there...

Spiralmonkey: I signed that petition, so nice to see that the system works, sort of.  I am also one f those who are still a bit confused as to why Barack Obama got a Nobel prize.  Not knocking him, just don't know what they felt he had done at that point to merit it.  It just seemed a bit patronising - "well done, you're black!  And you're president!".   A few years in, after he'd maybe had some achievements would make sense, but as soon as he won?  Odd.  Just strangely patronising and odd.

Wow. Haven't been to Fark in a few months, interesting new interface.

Anyway, President Obama signed some more START and SALT treaties that further reduces nuclear weapons in both Russian and American arsenals. If Metal Gear Solid is any indication, there's nowhere to put them but cold storage somewhere. Still, it's a huge step up from what could have happened twenty years ago. For reasons like that, Obama won.

He was also given the prize right before the Arab Spring took off and NATO's involvement in it.

During WWII, Irena Sendler, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.

She had an ulterior motive..
.
She KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews, (being German).  Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box she carried, and she carried in the back of her truck a Burlap sack, (for larger kids).

She also had a dog in the back, that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in, and out of the ghetto.  The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.
She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, and arms, and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out, and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.  After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it, and reunited the family.

Most of course had been gassed.  Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes, or adopted.

Last year Irena was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

She LOST.

Al Gore won, for doing a slide show on Global Warming.

mekki: tenpoundsofcheese: Hope she wins but since she didn't even win Time's Person of the Year, it is doubtful.

Her whole family deserves it. In a time and place where men make sure women and girls are raised to be submissive, uneducated and be prepared to be nothing more than baby factories, her father went against the cultural norm and wanted more for his daughter. If only more fathers were willing to stand up for their daughters like this one has the Taliban wouldn't be as powerful as they are now.

Sorry, I know you mean well, but the casual misandry in that paragraph really bothers me. The women's foul treatment in that region has less to do with men being TEH EVIL, and more to do with the inherent physical difficulties of their environment. In a savage world without modern conveniences and medicine, women in that region pretty much HAVE to become baby factories in order to produce enough children to keep the population stable. (And most people, both men and women, lead pretty crappy, depressing, drudgery-filled lives. It's only a fortunate few at the top--mostly men, admittedly--who get to live and rule like kings.) It's thanks to our modern science that we have the technology that allows people to easily keep and clean a house (so they have enough time to work outside of it) AND the technology which makes workplaces safe and comfortable enough for women to earn taxable money in. (Oh and most of this technology? Invented by men. And most of the laws which granted women in the West their rights and freedoms so they could vote and work outside the home? Passed by legislators filled with men. So much for MEN being by-default misogynistic oppressors.)

That being said, the cruelty being visited upon women of that region is very real has less to do with men being men, and more to do with certain f'd up aspects of that region's culture. As you can see, the girl's own father stepped up to the plate and tried to give her a better life, so the men in that region can't be ALL bad. (And more of them would probably behave better towards women if they felt safe enough to do so.) All of those feminists who throw themselves into campaigning to eradicate the color pink or to make sure some catalog somewhere has enough girls playing with toy guns are, in my opinion, wasting time and resources which could be spent on helping girls in poorer countries who have REAL problems with misogyny...

She didn't do anything else, other than survive an assassination attempt that will probably be completed if she ever goes back... I'm not trying to knock her down really, but I'd rather someone get it who actually did something towards world peace...

Then again, I'm also of the camp that almost all men in the region she came from should be forcibly neutered, since all they are doing for mankind is proving why we need to be made extinct...

Give the Nobel Peace Prize to someone who caused unrest and strife. That's sounds about right for the logical progression from giving it to politicians who have done nothing on purely leftist politics basis.

Somehow I expect Occupy Wall Street to win next year. Or maybe the ghost of Che will win.

My policy for Afghanistan would have been once we occupied it to ask every female their if they wanted to stay in a backwards country where they would be treated as third class citizens or if they wanted political asylum.  If you want to treat your women like that, there are much more peaceful ways to deal with you than ethnic cleansing- we just help your women leave and see how you are doing in a generation.

If we take their dogs too maybe we could see what a cross between Afghani and country music sounded like.

Wow. Really? Why don't you read about everything she did. She, a young girl, received constant threats. She lives in a country where there is little police can or will do to protect someone like her. What have you done that even comes close to making the difference she was trying to make in the world. I know I haven't done anything so deserving of that kind of award. By your attitude I can tell you haven't either.

Dick.

So let's say she wins the prize. Then what?

Unless she moves to a civilized country and spends the rest of her life watching over her shoulder for some murderous hopped-up idiot with a Koran jammed down his shorts, she'll be dead inside of five years. And her family, unless they also move.

Other girls like her are still being murdered. Millions of others are forced into what amounts to slavery. We do like to fret about that, but unless the 2009 Peace Prize winner sends some of his drones over to pay certain self-styled Islamic leaders multpile visits that end with them and their followers  good and dead, with the message to cut the crap and play nice with the rest of humanity if they'd like to continue existing on this side of the dirt, there's nothing that will change over there.

Some people just need a good killing, and motherFARK the concept of sovereignty for any nation that can't or won't handle this kind of shiat themselves. We may be far from the perfect nation, but by any objective measure we're a damn sight better than the verminous little farks hiding behind their nazified interpretation of Islam, who've been hounding Malala with no fear of repercussions. I'm glad Obama and Bush have recognized these things and acted accordingly, whether or not they ever say it out loud. More, please.

She doesn't belong in the group of peace prize winners. Yassar"murder all Jews" Arafat, Barack"kill innocents with a drone and call them combatants" Obama. She actually did something that might appear deserving...

She is a brave young girl who deserves any award and recognition that can be sent her way.

She was targeted for Murder because she wanted her and other girls to go to school.  Big brave muslim men and their Dark Ages culture were so afraid of her they put a hit out on her.  Nice culture there guys, nice religion.

I just hope it makes a difference.

Obama and Hillary should each get their own Nobel Peace Prize this year.  If it weren't for Hillary, there'd be no peace in the world at all, that's a proven fact.  She went to a different country every week just to make sure. As soon as Kerry takes over, all hell will break loose.
