Although the part about foolish ethanol mandates creating food shortage is legitimate concern, why is this being attributed to O'Reilly?

"Hippies", like "Communist", "Socialist", "Fascist", and "Liberal", are just noises made by colicky adults who reasoning is less developed than an infant.

All of those, and the others, simply mean, "Not me!1!"

I can't wait for all of the above to die off with them.

Once boomers are dead and gone finally maybe America will be able to address the issues without blithering nonsense about the 1950s, or the rampant "me first and the gimme gimmes" that the boomers have made their signature political stance since the beginning.

"Daily Caller claims that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ruined the Middle East by requiring ethanol be added to gasoline, which he claims has caused a food shortage in the region, meaning that the various revolts taking place in nations like Libya and Egypt haven't been about civil right or political corruption, but instead about a lack of corn."

Revolt in the 1990's were actually caused mostly by lack of food, and unemployment. The Egyptian government had a system giving all college grads a job (they ran out of jobs to give). Eventually the cost of doing anything required you to bribe anyone involved to get anything done. I think the revolutions put up the fascade of fighting tyrants, but food and jobs are what really motivate people. Basic human needs trump basic human rights.

Let me let you in on a little deceit the media has worked on your generation - us hippies? - we were about 5% of the Boomer generation, and mostly lived on the coasts. The rest of the Boomers were the same order-following, resentful, shiat-taking worms the wad have always been. While we got high and screwed and danced in the sun, they glared in silent rage , while being f**ked over by their bosses - again, as the wad always do. And now? They're getting even for the sixties - that's what the putirid, stinking "Reagan Revolution" was from the get-go.
They never "sold out" - they had nothing to sell.

Actually, had you done any research whatsoever, you would have realized that, in fact, it was the New England Complex Systems Institute which correlated that information.  You would have to have seen, too, that the article was written by Christopher Bedford.  The article about the Middle East and food prices is here:http://dailycaller.com/2013/02/02/how-hippies-are-ruining-the-mi ddle-e ast-too/

Lastly, your attribution of Bill O'Reilly to the Daily Caller is erroneous, as it is the product of Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel.

Other than that, you were totally correct.  Jackass.

2013-02-02 06:18:40 PM
The dailycaller article referred to by stableytimes.com was an opinion piece written, not by Bill O'Reilly, but by Christopher Bedford, as an opinion piece. To say that Mr. Bedford has taken some liberties with the findings of the  New England Complex Systems Institute, upon which he bases his opinions, is an understatement. While the use of corn in ethanol production is a factor, it isn't the only factor. There was a weak corn crop due to drought, causing the cost of corn to rise; something Mr. Bedford fails to mention.  Additionally there has been a large amount of speculation in global commodities that has bumped up the prices - something that Mr. Bedford also fails to mention, even though the studies named commodity speculation first in their list of causes.
Mr. Bedford is ignoring major parts of the study's findings in order to support a biased and ridiculous conclusion.

DerpHerder: I think the revolutions put up the fascade of fighting tyrants, but food and jobs are what really motivate people. Basic human needs trump basic human rights.

There are some pretty convincing studies that showed that virtually every successful revolution in history correlated with rising food prices.

Even the US massive agricultural subsidies were heavily influenced by politicians desire to eliminate food prices affecting electoral results

Though this has little to do with environmental regulations. Mostly that these regions are running out of water. Not necessarily from climate change, but from agricultural over-production. Malthus is about to rear his head again.

Lesse... ethanol being added to gasoline caused the unrest in the Middle East since gasoline is derived from petroleum which we get from the Middle East.

Ethanol is derived from corn.

Corn is native to the Middle East but is native to the American super continent.

Corn was introduced to the rest of the world by the Spanish.

The Spanish were introduced to the corn by the Aztec.

The Aztec most likely were introduced to corn by a Meso American group that domesticated it from tzeint... teo.. the stuff that maize came from.

That early proto Meso American group most likely migrated into the Americas through either the Bering Strait or by Pacific Ocean island hopping.

The ancestors to that group most likely came from Asia.

The ancestors to that Asian group most likely came from the Tigris/ Euphrates region which is located in the Middle East....

Therefore the unrest in the Middle East is the fault not of Hippies but of people that originated in the Middle East.

As a resident of a corn growing state, Iowa, (who is not in any way connected with agriculture), I would like to point out that the majority of the corn that is being diverted to ethanol was never intended for direct human consumption (Corn Flakes etc.) but instead meant to be livestock feed. And after it is used for ethanol, it is still used as feed.

Food prices because of hippies?

No.

Food prices are up because:

1) Federal Reserve money creation.
2) FDA regulations and policies that benefit big-agra.
3) Ethanol policies to favor big corporations such as ADM.
4) FDA regulations and policies that benefit big industrial food companies.
5) Farm subsidies and other misc interferences.

I wonder how many of these things O'Reilly supports when republicans are doing them?

Meanwhile with democrats running things raids on hippies who sell raw milk and other natural foods to willing and knowing customers have been increasing.

You know, I'm kind of tired of all the boomer-bashing. There is to me a significant difference between early boomers and late boomers, mainly the fact that we late boomers didn't experience the "free love", "turn on, tune in, and drop out" sixties - we were toddlers and kindergarteners. We didn't even get into the "Studio 54 snort coke while you Saturday Night Fever in your white suit" shiat in the seventies, because we were young teenagers. We did get the "preppy", "greed is good" thing in the eighties, but a lot of us rejected that because we were young parents all about raising our Jessicas and Jennifers and Brads.

Now in the 'teens of the 21st century, I'm being lumped in with all the selfish, entitled "boomers" when I didn't even get to have any of the fun they had. It's not fair ;)

While I agree with your first part, your second part is a ridiculous complaint. There is a reason pasteurization was invented - PEOPLE DIED IN THE MILLIONS FROM DRINKING RAW MILK! Raw milk is not good, it is not wholesome, it is not proper for an agri-business-based food country. And believe it or not, it isn't only adults with full knowledge of the risks who are exposed to the contamination of raw milk. Just because something is "natural," like honey or milk, doesn't mean it is good for you. Honey can give botulism to babies, unpasteurized milk is a growth culture for many diseases including tuberculosis, unpasteurized apple juice can give e-coli to people who drink it.

"According to a 13-year review by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate of outbreaks associated to pasteurized milk was 150 times less than outbreaks caused by unpasteurized milk (raw milk) and products made from it. Furthermore, the researchers found that the rate out outbreaks was over two times higher in states where the sale of unpasteurized milk was legal compared to those where it was illegal." Link (only one of many sources of info on the diseases from raw milk; also check out history)

Being against pasteurization is as stupid as being against vaccination.

Those of us born in the early 60s and on are not Boomers, we're Generation X, the bitter and farked over generation. Of course our generation isn't without our own failings. We over coddled our children to make up for the way the Boomers ignored us and as a result have unleashed upon the world a new generation of precious snowflakes that expects to be praised just for getting up out of bed in the morning and is completely unprepared for the realities of working in a dog eat dog world.

Basically I guess every generation sucks. Boomers piss me off the most as a generation though.

I'm frequently accused of being a far-right-wing wingnut on Fark, and perhaps rightly so, but even I think that it's some kind of chutzpah for someone who writes books about 'Culture wars' to speak on the topic of problems in the Middle-East so lightly. The problems here are exclusively caused by culture, and a lack of willingness to relinquish and adapt to prevailing cultures. Mr. O'Reilly disdains the decline of Christianity in the West as secularism becomes more and more firmly rooted, but the problems in the Middle-East would be solved rather quickly if, for instance, Arab-Israelis converted to Judaism, or if Arabs in other countries would inter-marry and lose their deep attachments only to their own tribe.

So no one in this thread has really challenged the idea (from what I can see) that the EPA has anything to do with the amount of ethanol added to gasoline/petrol that is used in places that are not the USA?  Am I missing something?  Do they add ethanol at refineries in Europe?  Probably.  Is that because the EPA says they have to?  I don't think so.

Bill O'Reilly is not the source for the statement that hippies are the cause for problems in the Middle east.
Christopher Bedford who writes for the Daily Caller is the source.

Jake Robison (of the Stabley Times [beta]):
The Daily Caller is not run by Bill O'Reilly.
It is run by Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel

I was unaware that the US gave large amounts of corn to the Middle East at any point in time. Before ethanol, all excess corn was dumped into the ocean because no one could make a profit with it.

Newswatch 16s' William "Bill" O'Reilly reports
on the "heppie" menace (circa 1975)

Ewww...he looks like he just stepped out of an underground orgy club on a seedy NYC side street, and he reeks of KY and Camels.

You shouldn't have capitalized camels-- people may think you were referring to the brand of cigarettes rather than the animal.
