Damnit.

Just a note, since it wasn't immediately obvious to me, if you're holding a tool/weapon (shovel, spear, hammer, etc) that will automatically get used as a gathering tool for wood or stone.  It makes it faster (and you don't take damage from punching trees and rocks), but does consume durability of the tool/weapon.

I only play flash games in Netscape, just to be sure.

FireFox18 here.

I'll try it out on Chrome. I'm really starting to get tired with FFs crap. What happened FireFox? You used to be cool.

I didn't have any problem with getting it to load in firefox 18, though it did apparently crash after a while. Possibly a stupid question, but did you allow it in noscript?

The chickens and rabbits avoid you, but pretty much everything else (I've encountered wolves, bears, spiders, rats, bats, sharks, and zombies thus far) is trying to kill you.

I consider the fact that I've ascended with a wishless Tourist more of an accomplishment than my bachelor's degree.

I'm kind of torn on this one.

I like the skill building and the easy crafting.

I don't like the bears. First world spawned was barren. Just nothing. I finally croak and I get a lush, green world. Three step forwards, I get tackled by a bear.

I guess that's the rogue-like part. Do like how you keep the skills and craft patterns on death though.

My guy's got a nice little home set up in a cave, but I can't seem to figure out how to use walls/floors. Any thoughts?

MindStalker: How the hell do you make fire..????

It's pretty hard to get without some nice, lush green trees. Just attack one of those for awhile. You'll need a couple of branches, some twigs, and some tree bark (note that you can turn branches into twigs if you can't find any of those). Turn the bark & twigs into kindling. Then you can make a hand drill with kindling & 2 branches.

Once you have the hand drill, throw some kindling on the ground, then light it on fire with the drill.

Still haven't figured that one out. Made a campfire!... can't light it.

JasonOfOrillia: how do you stay on top of the food?

You can gather food from the occasional bush or mushroom by facing it and double clicking on your shovel.  Once you make a spear, you can go fishing.  Once you find some shale, you can "carve" the bodies of animals you kill (face the corpse and double click the shale), which will frequently get you meat.  You can cook the fish and meat at any fire.

I was playing the alpha version pretty hardcore. I had a really nice house and was getting geared up to fight pirate ghosts when it would shiat itself. Never play alpha builds.

It's no Dwarf Fortress. :-p

Still it looks pretty fun from the 5 minutes I spent wandering around. Went in the water and had a shark chasing me.

I get so sick of these games. Promise a great, immersive, deep system, and then slap the shiattiest graphics and gameplay you can on it, and top it all off with a zero learning curve "Our tutorial window is part of the main interface!" derp.
Like frickin' Dwarf Fortress.
I probably would have enjoyed this back when DOS was new and shiny, but these days I expect the Aspie code monkeys to actually talk to some graphics and game designers to make sure the game looks and plays as well as the crafting system works.

Just couldn't get into it, I mean I loved FTL but this just seemed like some crappy text based adventure that someone threw some 4-bit graphics on.

/eaten by a grue.

bit too random on the level creations.  First island I got had 4 palm trees and 3 rocks and that was it.  After swimming as far as I could and dying of exhaustion the next island is easily 20 times the size of the last one and I haven't finished exploring it.  Still haven't found a normal tree on it, though.  Palm trees don't seem to have sticks... no sticks no fires no tools.... kind of lame.

2013-02-02 09:29:46 PM
Found a cave and went inside.  I didn't have a torch so the inside was completely black. Since I couldn't see my character, I couldn't click my way out of there and into the free world.  That sucks.

Every couple of years, I take a look at that. I read a tutorial. Usually by the third section of the tutorial, I reconsider my choice.

I've seen a couple 'Lets Plays' of FTL, and have read a lot of praise for it. It's in my 'to get' list. I still have several other games to play through, but not enough time to do so. I'll make sure to grab it on sale just to have it on hand.

I really want to like it, and I have a friend who is really into it. I just can't get past the lack of a proper UI. If it's going to be so complex, you need a good UI to manage the information. The various community version improve it slightly, but only slightly.

Is that an one of those 50 Shades of Grey knock offs that are in all the book stores these days?

I was having fun with this game. I had built up a nice little fortress with all sorts of good stuff inside, and I was going out and exploring. Even found a bit of treasure.

And then I built the bull boat, and when I activated it, it brought me to some other island entirely, told me there was no way to go back, and the boat broke.  So now I'm done.

Your lack of foresight amuses me.

Well, I didn't think a boat with a duration > 1 would only survive one trip.

Ghastly: Is that an one of those 50 Shades of Grey knock offs that are in all the book stores these days?

It's the same general sort of farked uppedness as a Johnny the Homicidal Maniac Comic. You play as the abused child of an insane fundie mother who thinks her god has told her to kill him. As Isaac, you escape into a basement filled with vermin, cancers, your stillborn siblings and Biblical horrors, looking for an escape from your torment. There's a different ending every time you win (at least, for the number of times I've played) and for being largely inexplicable, it has a surprising depth.

Dwarf Fortress is probably easier to love for those of us who cut our teeth on Roguelike. I'm actually kind of awed by the amount of information that's conveyed with plaintext.

I have to strongly disagree with this. Dwarf Fortress has the worst UI/graphics that I've ever seen, and I've been PC gaming for 14 years.
