Pretty much that. Granted I haven't been to one stateside, but the ones I went to while I was stationed in Germany were awesome. Lots of cool craftwork for sale, great food, and mead I haven't found an equal to here stateside.

Ren Faires are one of the last bastions of free spirit. No one gets judged at a Ren Faire because the silliness of it all is why most people pay to go. The only other place that has that type of freedom is Comic Cons. Although the models they pay to advertise may get a little judgey of the cosplayers, but it's ok because they are nothing but eye candy with no soul anyways.

I always enjoyed the AZ and CO Ren Faires, but the "Mutton and Mead" festival up here in New England pretty much sucked.  It was tiny, the turkey legs were bland, and there was nary a corseted wench in sight.  The more time I spend up in this area of the country, the more I am amazed that anyone actually chooses to live here.

I grew up in CT, and dont recall anyone ever getting excited about a Ren Faire. Here in Tampa Bay FL the local one is a pretty big deal...at least among the crowd thats into that sort of thing.

Turkeys were take from the new world to the old world, where they thrived.  Then they were taken back to the new world and introduced to North America.  Where those farking things are thriving.  Too damn many obnoxious wild turkeys around here ever since they killed off all the coyotes.

So basically, while they might have known about turkeys, it is unlikely they would be selling turkey legs at a country fair.

Yep, that's the one.  Been about a half dozen times over the years, always had a good time.  I like the one in CO better, if only for the fact that it was in the middle of a forested area and the temperatures weren't in the high 80s like they usually are at the AZ one.  I have some pics from the CO one:

It was made into a housing development.  Then about 1 year later Radon gas was detected leaking from everywhere and it was deemed uninhabitable.  By then the Faire had moved to Gilroy/Pacheco Pass and attendance dropped by about 90%.  (Sigh)  I miss the Black Point venue as well.

I remember going the Renfaire in the Agoura Hills outside LA in 1974 before the She-Ra wannabes and potheads tainted the atmosphere. At that time they were serious about the language and recreating the era. There was an actual audition phase where you had to demonstrate historical knowledge and dialect.

When it was franchised out it got really sloppy.

One year in the '80s one year, some geeks showed up in Star Trek (original series) garb wit tori orders and phasers drawn playing an away team.

I larfed, but the faire was dead to me.

I worked that faire and they always had auditions and rehearsals, including language classes.  Note that we had no control over how customers dressed so couldn't really prevent the star trek and conan types, other than to make sure they didn't have any real weapons.

I quit when it was bought by a corporation and turned into McFaire.

The only other place that has that type of freedom is Comic Cons. Dude, 'hard core' ren faire people judge the everloving shiat out of everyone else. Especially if you go to one of the 'real' style ones, where they don't let in 'fantasy' people, like fairies or elves.  Just like any sub culture, Ren-fest people have some real assholes.

2013-02-02 06:50:28 PM
I ask this every ren faire thread and haven't had any success, so I'll try again --

Once upon a time, maybe 8 years ago, I ran across a thing on the web that read like it was supposed to be a popular introduction to what life was like in the middle ages and early renaissance, but instead of the real facts they substituted ren faire tropes, and it was really funny. Every time I've tried searching for it I couldn't find it.

Did I imagine reading that thing? Anyone know the thing I'm talking about? Know where I can find it again?

Speaking in general terms: The pizza and hotdogs style food you see at a festival is all one big corporate entity. They pick food based on margins and how easy it is to make. The booths that made popovers, and other high-quality or period foods are generally all independent. The independent vendors have been hit from both sides over the last decade or so as a weakened economy has decreased attendance, increased food prices, and increased the piece of the pie that the Festival will try to take from the profits. Tons of independent owners have gone under or pulled up stakes..

My family was heavily involved in both the local RF and the local SCA and it really is like trying to broker a peace between two Koreas.  Rennies just want to know where the beer is, how bad the privy lines are, and who's going to be at the bonfire later.  Some of the SCAdians will go to outright farking DEFCON 1 if your farking lunch menu recipes are not 100% accurate.  My father had a six month long flame war with one of these guys, it was absurd.

In basic terms, lots of GOR folks (I'm sure a few are sane) are into really creepy relationships that are almost like a healthy kink power fantasy, but too often turns into pure male power fantasy and degredation, eventually ditching consent.  Lots of these guys are part of the paleo-conservative movement.

The wenches are always a welcome sight at the RF, but I also enjoy some of the shows and even some of the shops.

The washing wenches, if they come through your area, are a pretty good show.
I am disappointed, however, that a lot of the real artisanl shops at the festival have been forced out by cheap shops that sell mass made goods. I have a lot of nice costum made glass and metal smith pieces I had gotten from there in the past.

Outlaw of GOR was the name of that film (yes, that is Jack Palance, obviously trying to pay off some heavy IRS fine by acting in films that were sh*tty even by 1980's standards).

Based on a  series of fantasy novels that were mainly a "John Carter of Mars" type of ripoff, but with the added hook of female slavery with misogyny and male chauvinism in levels that would even make an 15th Century Sultan cringe.

This of course spawned it's own sub-genre of male domination fans who like to ahem......"role play" with their girlfriends & wives. Want to wreck a RenFaire? Let the local GOReans find out about it.

Supposedly, even the author of the GOR series of books (John Norman) /facepalms at the fandom of pigs and insecure cum-catchers he's inspired.

There's nothing scary about making ice cream with liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen and that bizarre practice known as molecular gastronomy are close friends and have been for a long time.

The fool in that link  drank liquid nitrogen, however, and discovered that it expands far more rapidly than is good for a human body - why in the hell a bartender thought mixing Jager & liquid nitrogen was a good idea is beyond me. The expansion ratio from liquid to gas is 1 to 694, for Christ's sake.

Dear

GAWD

THIS

There's nothing quite like chowing down on the hind appendage of large farmed fowl while dressed as an anachronistic pirate and watching grown men and women debase themselves with slapstick and mud for tips.

/Going to the one in Deerfield Beach, FL this month during Pirate Weekend.

I used to go the original faire in Agoura. I got the recipe for the marinade used for the turkey legs stashed away somewhere.

The faire they hold here in Las Vegas is a train wreck. When it first started, it was pretty decent, plenty of things to see and do, but over the last decade or so, it's just the last stop for vendors trying to sell the crap they couldn't sell the year before.

They are. Merchant William Strickland is credited with bringing 6 turkeys to England in the early 1500s. Henry is supposedly the first English king to eat turkey, hence the big deal about him being portrayed with the drumstick in hand.

A thousand times THIS.

A friend of mine who had been to Faire with me a few times ended up falling in love with an SCA guy.  She dragged us (her friends) to an SCA event in order for us to get to know her new boyfriend better.
I had heard rumors over the years that they weren't much fun, but I chalked it up to team rivalry/tribalism.

Dude, 'hard core' ren faire people judge the everloving shiat out of everyone else. Especially if you go to one of the 'real' style ones, where they don't let in 'fantasy' people, like fairies or elves.  Just like any sub culture, Ren-fest people have some real assholes.

I went every year since I was a few days old.  Still have a Faire Map from 1979.
Tried a dozen other Faires and none were nearly as good.  I think the forest ended up getting chopped down and turned into a golf course, the bastards.

I go to the Michigan Renaissance Fest in Holly at least once a year, dressed in full garb. The last few years I wore my turn-of-the-16th-century Italian outfit. Not boobalicious, but proper and as accurate as i could manage it.  I have done the full-force-boobies corsetry before, and I'll never forget the dude who stared at them for a minute and then complimented me on my hand-carved walking staff. *lol* Strangeness.  Did the pirate thing a few years, too.  For me it's an excuse to dress up and show off my wicked l33t sewing skillz. XD

Anyway, Ren Faires are just hella fun. The costumery, the weaponry, the rampant double-entendres of the pickle vendors, all the hand-made goods and artistry, the shows... Manolete! WhipBoy! Ded Bob! The Washing Well Wenches! And everyone's favorite Men without Pants, Tartanic!

I'm a fan. It's a fun day out, and (at least so far) the quality and variety of artisan crafts is unmatched at any other similar outdoor market. Also, I like to catch a couple of the shows and have some mead.

The Colorado one has the best location! Permanent structures built on a wooded site.

The Tampa one has been the best overall experience for me - it is much larger than Colorado and the vendors are superior. Once you are roaming around you forget about the lack of permanent structures.
