Yup. Nothing offensive about calling the black first lady a fat gorilla and gays an abomination.

Nothing offensive at all.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to defecate on a litter of cute little puppies in front of a girl scout troop.

I stand corrected. But it's fair to say homosexuality is not widely accepted. And I'd wager that graph would look different for Alabama only. And since, as we can all agree, the federal government had no mandate to preach morality....

I'm just saying can't we let idiots be idiots? Does every single stupid comment have to result in a societal "teachable moment?"

It's friggin impossible to say anything anymore without someone running to a legislature or higher civil authority to seek help. If someone disagrees with the guy, how about just telling the guy he's a douche and moving on?

That's why I think his comment about telling the school board was spot on. Every single transgression these days has to be brought to the attention of some level of government. We are becoming reliant on the man.

Discuss.

In cases of adults who occupy positions of authority over children, such as teachers, some limitations on speech may be appropriate.  I'm a teacher, and I have enough sense to know that some of my opinions should not be discussed in the classroom.

This guy sounds like he has difficulty with self-control and doesn't have the sense to temper his language.  Since he is professionally obligated to deal with youngsters, he really should be expected to master those skills, if for no other reason than that shooting his mouth off can potentially result in a lawsuit against his employers.

nickdaisy: Other than being slightly crass how is anything he said worthy of discipline? Assuming he was just conversing, isn't he entitled to express an opinion provided it's not deeply offensive or compels his students into agreeing with him? This would seem to merit an admonishment from his supervisor but not suspension or termination.

You don't think teachers ever mocked political leaders or the spouses of politicians before?

And if the guy doesn't like homosexuals that would seem to be his business provided he's not assaulting one.

He seems like a tool but he's a football coach not a philosophy professor. I dislike this need to seek out everyone who has aberrant or minority views and try to purge their ignorance to make them part of the majority. Just let these idiots lead their lives and suffer in their own shallowness.

Teachers don't get to call black people gorillas or insult minorities of any type. It's not "his business" that he hates gay people. He made it the class' business. Including possibly, a gay student who knows for certain he/she will not get a fair shake in this class.

It's really very simple.

Not gay:
- Sodomizing JV players with a broom stick

-  Slapping erections together until someone cries uncle

Gay:
- Two dudes kissing

If this man worked for me, as an educator, i would be far more concerned about his grotesque emotional immaturity and terrible judgement than his pathetic "views". Possibly, but some anti-gay bigots literally don't "believe" in gays. As in, they don't think we're a minority group. "Gay" is not a state of being to them, but an action.

There's no "lives as" requirement to be a Christian. There is simply the requirement that one believes Christ died for our sins.

Minor point, but neocons aren't intrinsically anti-union. There primary concern is bombing brown folks to make the world safe for Israel democracy.
Movement conservatives or the corporate anarchist branch of the GOP are the anti-union folks.
