I am shocked to learn that Harry Reid was outmaneuvered.

At this point, the predictability of their opposition should be the Democrats' greatest strength. Come down on the side of baseball, apple pie, and American made automobiles, and watch their rivals fall over themselves to paint all of these things as the WORST THING TO EVER BE SAID IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD!

Seriously, kids. Use their frippin' own tendencies against them, and reduce these idiots to pools of their own flopsweat as they try to explain to their electorate why they want to crush the NFL, local farms, and ship jobs overseas. Folks wonder why I left the party and DIDN'T become a Democrat? This is why. The Democrats are perhaps slightly better at this point for some issues, but the incompetence and Red Sox-esque ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory is not just tiresome, it's nearly as bad as the knee jerk, mustache twirling shilling being done on the part of the Republicans. And it's sad that these two monolithic structures are lurching against one another, while the nation sort of fumes and smolders in the middle of the sissy fight these yaboos are having...

Mitch McConnell is a morally bankrupt subhuman traitor who should be executed in the public square.

The Senate Democrats are total idiots for not making this reform. Congressional Republicans aren't interested in governing. They are interested in power and keeping in ever more amounts of money their big moneyed backers. That is it.  I mean, to get voted in, they have to throw some bones (go guns! Gays are bad! Planned Parenthood is the reason for our deficit!) to the ill-informed masses who vote for them, but that's not where their true priorities lie.

i find that hard to believe. i'm guessing he knew the GOP would still abuse the filibuster. this now gives him cover to enact the "nuclear" option.

Harry Reid, December 2012: "There are discussions going on now, but I want to tell everybody here: I'm happy, I've had a number of Republicans come to me and a few Democrats," the Democratic majority leader told reporters Tuesday afternoon. "We're going to change the rules. We cannot continue in this way. So I hope we can get something Republicans will work with us on. "But it won't be a handshake," Reid added. "We tried that last time; it didn't work."

Farking idiot. WHY IS HE STILL OUR SENATE MAJORITY LEADER?

That's what Obama has been doing.  And if this is all part of a Cunning Plan by Harry Reid to give himself political cover for the nuclear option, great.  But that would require balls from Reid and the only time he brings those out is when he's up for reelection.

Not that the consumer protection agency will be the savior of the common man but this Republican opposition again makes one wonder why any average person votes for these people.

The people who thought we didn't need to massively reform the filibuster or that the Republicans in the Senate would shape up their behavior were wrong. Hopefully they realize the error of their ways and push even harder in January 2015 for bigger reform.

So, the GOP is fine with naming Cordry as head of the regulatory agency so long as that agency is subject to the whims of Congress (meaning the lobbyists for those subject to being regulated) and isn't actually allowed to regulate anything.

What's that saying about not negotiating with terrorists?

Reid needed 50 votes to accomplish meaningful reform and he didn't have them. You should be blaming the half dozen Democrats that refused to sign on.

To be fair, John Boehner has to deal with a party infected by 24/7 Tea Party derp fiestas. That'd drive me to tears as well.

Senate Republicans want three big changes before they'll stop blocking Cordray. ...

Okay, let's make this a public fight, then. Get Republican Senators on record as favoring emasculating the agency so that the financial sector can rip people off easier. If no Repub Senator has the balls to do this publicly, pin it all on the turtle, personally.

2013-02-02 02:21:52 PM
It's a long game. While those of us who are not anarchists would have loved to see the Republicans' stomped into the ground, you have to remember that the point of the Senate is not to be strictly majority rules, railroading legislation through, like the House. Notwithstanding that about 97 or 98 of those senators need to be set on fire, it's still supposed to be a slow-moving, deliberative body.

There will come again a time when Democrats are out of power.  I don't fault Harry Reid for losing the battle to win the war.

I don't think they were even trying for that.

It's not even a deliberative body, when a few can decide to prevent discussion of any topic they want.

I am at a point where that Jet Blue Election Protection is looking better and better every day (even though it has been around for months). Certainly I am no fan of Republicans, but it is getting to a point where I just can't stand any of the politicians. Nothing ever seems to get done. Every time I hear the words "american exceptionalism" and how resilient people here are, I just cringe. Sometimes we, as a country, seem more equipped to find ways not to get things done than the opposite. Or at least it seems to have been going that way for the last 20 or so years.

(of course i am not leaving, but the rhetoric gets so tiring sometimes and stories like this filibuster thing just make me want to scream)

2013-02-02 02:45:01 PM
Could we possible just get a "Senate" tag? These stories are all the same.

Reid actually doing what he said he would do.

New Congress same as old Congress; only bills that will get passed are the ones that hurt us most.

How does the GOP not grasp that every time they pull this crap, they are eroding their own effectiveness? Eventually we'll just say "Okay, fine, you guys clearly don't have an honest bone anywhere among you. We shall now grind you into a fine paste."
