all of this was covered in Thursday's follow-up thread (except the last 6 sentences which were added yesterday). I doubt there is need for another thread for 6 sentences.

drop it. it's done. move on.

Older obese black woman paying for a party of 5, refuses to leave a tip for a young white female server.  Then complains to the company and gets the server fired.

Nope, I don't see a single stereotype here....

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I missed that thread so here's my .02¢

As someone who waited tables I fully understand where she's coming from and the article was very well written. It should be handed out to every patron who walks into a chain joint (people who avoid them and frequent independents tend to have their shiat together a little better) so they know what the smiling face that is serving them put up with...and FWIW, if you get 15% from me you sucked. You rock my table, you're getting 25%

I'm wondering if this pastor is a prosperity gospel type....

One little point " I would like to make a statement on behalf of wait staff everywhere: We make $3.50 an hour."

In some states wait staff make the full minimum wage + tips. And in some states they make even less. Also even with splitting tips if she is only getting $6 an hour in tips she is probably working horrible shifts.

Also in a lot of restaurants they do not split tips with the regular staff. Always kind of irked me as a line cook when the waitresses would walk out with a few hundred in cash and we made $6 an hour (at the time)

As this story has gotten popular, I've received inquiries as to where people can send money to support me. As a broke kid trying to get into college, it's certainly appealing, but I'd really rather you make a difference to your next server. I'd rather you keep that money and that generosity for the next time you eat out.

I think that part is worth hearing. Not to mention, no one made you click that link, so any waste of your precious time was by your own choice.

/Not the subby by the way.

Bullshiat.

Minimum wages for tipped employees by state.

I guess if she doesn't like making so little an hour, she should move west.

This talking point annoys the hell out of me.  Because it's so easy to move a long distance.  And if you've been working as a server for a while, you definitely have the money to do it.

I don't care. We pay our wait staff out here. She isn't speaking for us.

It also assumes that there are jobs available for her that she could instantly get. Honestly comments like this just show how little people think things through they imagine that we are all in sole control of all of our life circumstances all the time.

On second thought you are right. All the wait staff in the US should move to states that pay at least minimum wage. Close down ALL the restaurants in the offending states and then we will see some employment law  reform.

No, adjust the wage in the other states to match the west coast.

Look, I know everybody can't move (although the assertion that there are no wait staff jobs available out here is absurd, to say the least). What I'm saying (inelegantly it appears) is that we need to adjust the federal minimum wage law so that tipped employees receive at least minimum wage and tips are not counted against that. We've done the right thing on this side of the country. Why can't that be applied everywhere? Nobody should make below minimum wage and if they do, those businesses do need to be shut down.

This is odd. I agree with your last sentence, but can't figure out why it took three jerky posts to arrive there. It's like you're ashamed of empathy and compassion.

Most tipped employees would not want that. Cash tips are usually not declared and are thus tax free. What we did was basically declare enough tips to boost the hourly above the actual minimum wage and then add a few dollars more to make it appear legit. In Michigan at the time tipped employees made something like $2.15 an hour. Minimum was around $5.25 IIRC. So we would declare $4-6 dollars an hour in tips to the government. Most of the time we were making way more than that. And this was a pizza joint nothing fancy. You may here a sob story here and there but for my 10 years working in various joints in various states I've never run into a server just averaging minimum wage...

You know, going to a restaurant is about the only way that most people still experience having a servant class.  Do you want to be the nice family from Downton Abbey or the plantation owners from Roots?

Also, if you can't afford a decent tip, you shouldn't be eating out in the first place.

IMHO, the "pastor" is a self-appointed crackpot who calls herself a pastor only for the tax breaks.  She is the sheep in wolves clothing Jesus warned us about.

One other comment - I sympathize with this server and have crossed Applebys off my list of places to grab a bite.  But I have an issue with something she wrote"  FTA:  I need tips to pay my bills. All waiters do. We spend an hour or more of our time befriending you, making you laugh, getting to know you, and making your dining experience the best it can be. We work hard. We care. We deserve to be paid for that.

I am coming to your restaurant to eat.  I neither want nor expect you to be my friend.  If you want to get paid to make people laugh, go work a comedy club or join the circus.  I want a menu, my order taken and served promptly and correctly, and refills of my beverage.  I am not here to become your BFF.  Frankly, I don't really even give a crap what our name is. In exchange for providing my food, I will give you a 20 - 25% tip.  So STFU and GBTW.
