Minegishi's apology came hours after a tabloid newspaper published photographs of her leaving the apartment of her boyfriend, Alan Shirahama, a dancer in a boy band.

Are Japanese boy band members allowed to have girlfriends?

Head shaving is a traditional form of showing contrition in Japan.

With this, the game shows they have and their brand of porn, I challenge anyone to deny that those nuclear bombs we dropped have had some farking weird and long lasting effects.

The majority of game shows are quite boring. The porn is not much different than American porn, just pixelated. The head shaving is part of the effects of Buddhist culture where one could join the monastery for a year or two to atone for sins.

Evidence the nukes did nothing to influence culture for the weird at all is impossible, though, because America's dropped more nukes in the south-west than anyone's dropped anywhere and have you met the people there? Weirdos!

No, but the band put up a video of her after the fact apologizing for having a boyfriend.

She's also already "technically" fired since they demoted her to one of the lesser popular groups (Apparently this J-pop group has like..a ton of smaller subsets, and girls get shuffled around in them depending on how much fans like them)

AKB48 has a rotating cast of the new up and coming Jpop girls. They also have their own club where they play once a week and have franchised the club out to several new locations, so it's a major brand name. Riko Yamaguchi NSFW is a former member of the band that is doing AV and supposedly there are Japanese AV videos where the actresses are hired to explicitly impersonate the AKB48 band members.

There's at least six different teams of AKB, each with 16 regular members and some subs. On top of that there's a bunch of other similar mega-groups like HKT48, SHB48, and such that this company is making. Pretty soon finding a Japanese girl under 30 who hasn't been in a pop group is going to be impossible.

Shaving her head on youtube? I'm sure there are other, more effective and private, ways that young girl could get back on good terms with management if you know what I mean.

I just want to mention that if one looks at the jpop and kpop boy bands there seems to be a definite effort to blur their sexuality and make them look more feminine.  Damn bishounens.

I don't think you can pull a "they all look alike" defense within a culture like that.

If you remember, Britney Spears pretended to be a virgin for years.  I think the idea is that certain men, particularly young immature men, have a sexual fantasy involving sleeping with a virgin.

Not at all.The oldest senior members are only 20 or so. They start at 12-14. They're more like Vestal Virgins than sex objects like Kara. Basically the fantasy is they're pristine little flowers who are sexualized but not actually sexual. It's a complicated idea that fuels the Otaku culture movements with the idea of "moe" (mo-ay). My friend literally wrote a book on it.

2013-02-01 10:29:08 PM
Apparently, there isn't an official "no-dating" policy, or at least I seem to remember one of them saying that on TV.
I think the widely accepted idea that "idols" can't have boyfriends or girlfriends is pretty unhealthy. It's partly to project
a squeaky clean moral image, but it's also based around the fact that the single guys in their thirties and forties who drool over the girls will
get jealous/angry/even more stalkery if they found out that the object of their masturbation dreams was actually banging a real person.

Yeah i remember that. I also remember all of the outrage from parents when somebody took a picture of her smoking a cigarette when she was 20.

She got demoted to their AAA affiliate in Okinawa. Fortunately for her she's Rule 5 eligible and she's not on the 40-girl roster anymore.

Also when you join, you're on the clock.  Soon enough there will be a cuter girl behind you who captures the youthfulness, kawaii, and all the crap the band managers want more than you.  So you need to make a name for yourself as a Jpop legend so you stick around or springboard into something else.  Either this girl is desperate to stay around or she's doing this for the PR.  With 90 some members you have to work to get your name out (or sleep with the producer so you get featured a lot).

Umm, they've been doing freaky shiat for much longer than we're been irridating them.  Hell, you can find paintings of octopuses penetrating women in Japan going back a few centuries.  Remember, they spent about 200 years stewing in their own little hothouse - and have only been out for about 150 years.  Right now, they are still in a sort of cultural rumspringa - dropping the bombs was basically just white noise

Spend a few years making bank, then when you get tossed to the curb because you're an ancient 23 years old in the Jpop scene, then you have your $$$ and you can go on a drinking/drugs/farking bender for a while.

I know two JPop bandmembers in a (relatively) popular group (it's a long story), and yes... this is how the vast majority of the "bands" are managed.  Neither of my friends nor their bandmates are allowed to be seen dating, and if they *do* date, it's an arranged "relationship" set up by their management company (i.e. a band member from group 'x' dates a member for group 'y').  My friends are both getting to the age where, culturally, they're expected to start settling down and get married, so I'm not sure how that's going to jive with their agency (Johnny & Assoc.).  The consequences are very serious, from being "demoted" in your group's hierarchy (like this young lady was) to being flat-out fired.  When I visited a few years ago, they were both sweating bullets about possibly being seen hanging out with a gaijin female, but somehow we managed to keep a low profile.  It's an image thing--the fantasy that these insanely popular people are potentially "available" to the average fan, and the maintainence of whatever role the company has given each band member of band.  My friends are, respectively, the "shy one" and the "leader," while other bandmates are the "studious one," the "innocent one," and "the rebel."  Each role is completely fabricated, some actually the complete opposite of the guys' actual personalities, but they're constructed that way so every fan can identify with their "favorite" idol, buy their merchandise, etc.

It's really not THAT different than how we do things in the States.  Perhaps our pop stars aren't shaving their heads while tearfully apologizing for having a boyfriend and begging for forgiveness, but we do get plenty of trite, PR-generated "apology" statements, PR stunts, fake relationships, etc.

2013-02-02 04:26:12 AM
This jpop kawaii thing is seriously creepy. Has any psychiatrist written about the incestous sublimation involved in 40 year old men drooling over young women who dress like 12-year-olds? "Shatter the illusions of fans," brr. Would somebody explain this crap to me? Why is prepubescence considered desirable?

Maybe this is why virtual idols like Vocaloids need to take off. A digital singer won't ever insist on having a real life, or normal human relationships. Or age or get drunken photos published in the tabloids for that matter.

If they get too troublesome you can just hit the DELETE button.
