(Some Guy) Audio My son has entered a contest for a remix he did. My son is 14, the current leader has been a pro DJ longer than son has been alive. Check out the music. Vote for who you think is best. But please, don't vote for pro(s). Link goes to my son's mix   (beta.indabamusic.com) divider line 29

Oh just tell me who you want me to vote for. I'm not slogging through that many remixes for a song I never heard of.

And, just as I hit add comment, I realized how big of an idiot I was by re-reading the headline.

14??? Really really good.

I've been a dj/producer for 27 years and that is a lot better than most of the demos I get sent for my label.

If your son has other music I'd love to check it out. Maybe I can put it out or pass it to someone else who might be interested. Email in profile (I think).

Wish I could... but I'm not linking to FB for that.  Best of luck though.

Wow. Your son is a decent producer. That is good, especially considering he's 14. Very cool.

Why shouldn't we vote for pros if we think theirs are the best?

It wouldn't play. I tried to vote, but Facebook

Not really my kind of dance music, I like harder stuff, but good job for a 14-year-old.

Pretty nice. Not my scene, but a lot of talent there. Props to your son. Can't get vote to work though.

You should ground him for calling it nu-disco

Very nicely done!

Nice work - I voted for him.  Very impressed with what he did after listening to the original.

As far as re-mixing the original, I work with a couple of guys from India who are into music - should do a full raga mix of that and pick up the solo-y part in the middle.

So, when your son *IS* a pro, are you still going to want people to be biased against pros?

I would have voted for the one who deserved it most, but I just watched the one and it was good.

I've been knee deep in music since I was a munchkin. Bands, professional musicians from weekend giggers to globetrotting names, recording blah blah blah. With attitude and arrogance I can say your boy has talent. Please continue to encourage him. One doesn't have to spend a fortune on equipment; actually it's better to have a limited budget because it makes you make the most of what you have and you learn to seek out and buy good used gear.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance and value of good books. Reading about the history and development of instruments and musical genres is key to building a strong foundation of knowledge. It's good to know where things came from, it helps you go on to a higher dynamic than others have previously achieved.
Please try to turn the lad on to as many forms / style / genres of music as you possibly can. this too will help him grow & develop into a musician of greater width and depth. Exposure to the huge catalog that is Frank Zappa is a college education in musical creativity, do take advantage.
Seriously, your son GETS IT. Please don't let that flame go out. and thank you for sharing.

posted it to my facebook wall for my votes, so far son in 2nd place

Thought it was pedestrian and uninspiring. Did you have access to the original masters when making this remix? Because it sounds like you didn't.

Sounds like what you did was take a sample of the original track and lay a punchy electro kick over it but not enough attention paid to sequencing -- the kick and the claps are not sync'd and are giving off an awful "clicking" sound (you really want a tighter, punchier beat if you're going for the post-electro schtick). The drum programming is just all sorts of wrong and doesn't work at all: Either change the levels or use a different sample (perhaps the intro of the track, where there is no drum track)

To be fair, the original is not a very good track to begin with either. I suppose the only saving grace is the farting bassline, but it's the wrong kind of funk for a track like this. And I suppose the builds are alright if unnecessary since there's nothing going on in the track to build to, making the whole piece feel anticlimactic. I wouldn't call this Nu Disco.

Still, for a 14 year old, it's not the worst music in the world. He has promise -- tell him to keep it up. I didn't listen to every mix in the contest, but the guy in 1st place definitely deserves to be there.

Are you the Ishkur that made that wonderful, "Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music" site?  If so I'd like to thank you.  Me and my lady have had hours and hours of fun on it.  I also like to send it to people who think it all sounds alike.

Yes. I'm making a new one. If the last one consumed hours of your time, the next one will consume days.
