Gosling: The Kim family's retention of power at this point is chiefly based on being on a perpetual war footing with South Korea and the US; to keep the people always right on the very brink of war but never actually launching a war. The people responded better to Kim Il Sung than they did to Kim Jong Il. Kim Il Sung didn't need to respond to perpetual threats of war to keep his people in line. Kim Jong Il needed to do so occasionally. It's looking like Kim Jong Un is going to need to do so constantly to keep his legitimacy up.

North Korea has always been on the very brink of war with Oceania.

It's sadly a very common ploy.

A sane person might get that idea. We're talking about the leaders of North Korea.

Isn't Kim Jong Fatty western educated though? He's got to have at least a vague notion that the rest of the world exists and would absolutely destroy best Korea. If they haven't already destroyed them, it's because they don't want to.

He's Western-educated, but that doesn't mean he's well. The man was raised by Kim Jong-Il; I don't think it's fair to expect anyone in that situation to come out sane.

Concur...I'm thinking Michael Jackson, with nukes and a more aggressive personality.

nekom: But again, wouldn't being able to extend that rail line into Seoul be even better yet for them? What could the Norks possibly produce that Worst Korea couldn't produce more of better?

For now, there's a Russian-run cargo container port in Rajin, but their eventual goal is to extend the dual-gauge southward (an iffy proposition unless serious change somehow comes peacefully).

I'd be fine with that.  Normally I'd worry about getting a WORSE dictator, but with this whackjob, I'd say roll the dice.
