How does a fireworks truck just explode? There must have been some unstable fireworks in that thing. Or some jerk with a cigarette...

Or static electricity from boxes sliding around in the back.  If a box had some broken fireworks with exposed black powder, and you have a plastic/rubber  truck liner  with plastic wrapped boxes sliding around, you get a boom from either running over the powder or creating static.

Given all of the articles recently about their air pollution calling it fog makes it sound way more inocuous than the toxic cloud of filth that it actually is.

I also have to wonder about the structural integrity of the bridge since the explosion took it out.  I mean, if it was on top of the bridge, one would think the explosion would be forced up and away from it.  I would expect significant surface damage, but it shouldn't just collapse..should it?
Come on fark Engineers, inquiring minds want to know!

It probably *shouldn't* have collapsed, but without knowing more about the quantity/make-up/handling of the fireworks and the position orientation of the truck it is impossible to guess what forces where applied where.  Also the bridge construction comes into play...  I'd bet the bridge wasn't as strong as it was supposed to be, but depending on the blast, it might not have mattered.

Dammit, I can't find the photo I took once in China of a graphic road sign that basically translates to "no fireworks trucks allowed."

2013-02-01 09:39:17 AM
If it was like the fireworks 'oopsie' in Alton Illinois around 1992 or 1993 where all of the fireworks went off at the same time I wouldn't have wanted to be on that bridge.

At least in Alton it was over the river and quite awesome to see.

Maybe they will look into restricting which roads you can go on with explosives....

hey dorks at the guardian here's a little tip. If you are going to detect I'm using a mobile device, strip all the images including those for the other top articles, not just the potentially interesting one attached to the story. Or here's an idea, try to grab the window size so when you hit one that is 1280x960 you can make the leap that they want images. Or even better strip the images NOT part of story and leave the relevant one.

/ at least it serves the page and doesn't do the following:

FTA: The People's Daily quoted experts as saying that the force of a firecracker explosion could in fact destroy a bridge, underscoring widespread concerns in China about the quality of the country's rapidly constructed infrastructure.

If an exploding firecracker can take out your bridge, a quality review is in order.

Not even close.  It is more like "Of course I know how to use this safely you stupid American!  The Chinese invented gunpowder and fireworks.  Just watch me..." *BAM*.  I hate going over there during Lunar New Year because it is like America launched a shock and awe bombing campaign in some parts.  Even the calendar new year is bad (1 Jan) because they use it as a warm up for Lunar New Years.

We've got it made in Hawaii.  Three times a year, I see people at WalMart with entire carts full of fireworks.  Calendar new year?  Hell yeah, we're one-third Japanese.  Lunar new year?  Of course!  We're one-third non-Japanese Asians.  Fourth of July?  Sure - we're all Americans, after all!

If there's some other culture out there that has a pyrotechnic holiday in, say, spring or fall, let us know so we can have more excuses to blow shiat up.

Vietnamese New Year normally is a little bit off the Lunar New Year.  Also you could take your pick of fall Harvest Festivals (Korean would work well).  Oh and if you need more in December, that 1/3 Japanese part could celebrate 7 Dec.

I can remember back to 81 or 82 when they would take the entire toy section out of stores like Holiday Mart to stock them with REAL fireworks.  It was a crazy time in downtown Honolulu.  10,000 count firecracker rolls were commonplace.  Those were the days!
