You know, you'd have thought that the front office PR people would have sat these idiots down and told them that they need to keep their mouths shut to avoid insulting a large chunk of the team's fan base. Instead, players just keep stepping in it. If they want to dislike gay people that's their right but gosh, how stupid do these guys have to be too bought the hand that feeds them?

Very well put.

So, they participated in a video, and, apparently, the producers of the video didn't tell them how it would be used or what its purpose was (or lied to them about it). How, exactly, does this reflect badly on Brooks or Sopoaga? The producers of the video are the ones who look bad.

Huh? There must be more to the story, because nothing in that article says that it was anything more than them not knowing how the video would be used. Again, how does that reflect badly on them? Were they deceived by the producer of the video?

No. Here is a hint- they are lying.

How do you know that they are lying? It doesn't mention it in the article. And why was the video taken off the web site?

The players don't sound like the most well informed people if this is the first time they're finding out what they participated in as well as this being their response when you consider things like sponsors in a city like SF may shy away from you for saying something like that.

For saying something like what? If they didn't know the purpose of the video, should they lie and say that they did? If a reporter asked you about you being in an anti-bullying video (I'll assume that you haven't been in one) wouldn't you say, "what the hell are you talking about?"

You haven't even remotely demonstrated that they weren't lied to about the purpose of the video. I understand; the media says, "be outraged," and everybody gets outraged. But, unless there's more to this story that's been published elsewhere (this is the first I've heard of it) there is nothing in it to support the comments made about the players (or about me, for that matter).

What? When did I say that? The issue is: how do you know that they are lying?

A secondary issue is why was the video taken down? To me, that sure makes the producer of the video look suspect. If you hired someone to make a video, and they lied about knowing the purpose of it, would you take it down? I wouldn't. If you lied to someone in order to get them to make a video, and it became public knowledge that they didn't know its purpose, would you take it down? Yeah, I'd take it down and hope the story went away. Note that I'm not accusing anybody of anything (unlike the rest of the world, which seems to have jumped to a conclusion in the absence of any facts). It just looks suspicious.

Am I the only sane person left on the planet?

Look- Savage is an asshole, but he does make some good points ? Why did he take the video down ? I cant read his mind, but, I strongly suspect that it was due to the comments made, or else why would he have tweeted about it ? His it gets better videos are an attempt to save kids lives, and, until the 49ers come down with a solid ban hammer on those players- it sends mixed messages about his vids. So- yank all from that team until they do so.
Which goes back to my point- Are you really that damn stiupid that you do not know what the it gets better videos are for ? Do you not read all the newspapers ? And dont you think that lawyers who repesent nfl players do due diligence on what they will let their clients do ? Im not talking about a dumb tweet or 5, I am talking about a produced video, backed by the damn team.
Stop playing dumb

A. I've never heard of Savage or his "It Gets Better" project before clicking the above link. Also, since I don't follow football, I've never heard of the two players either.
B. No, I don't read the newspaper.
C. If he lied to the players, he lied to their lawyers and managers, too. Not accusing anybody; just a hypothetical statement.

I answered your questions, now here's a question for you: on what do you base your belief that they are lying? Can you articulate it in a calm, rational, logical manner, or can you only insult anybody who doesn't share your belief?

DrPainMD: Can you articulate it in a calm, rational, logical manner

I did. It gets better is not just with the nfl- it is with most sports teams on the planet. the RCMP also did one, and numerous other agencies have also done them.
To claim that you havent heard of it before makes me wonder why you would comment in a thread about the topic, without any background reading, or wondering if you even read news, anyplace. Do you live in the Cone of Silence or something ?

You called them liars and you called me obtuse. If they were lied to, then their lawyers and managers would have been lied to, also, so I don't see how that's evidence of anything, much less proof. I commented because the comments, both here and on the Huffington Post, have them tried, convicted and executed, and I was wondering if there was more to the story. Is there?

This is the San Francisco 49ers we're talking about here, right? The team that has the "LGBT Mecca" of San Francisco in it's very name? These guys play for the Niners, likely live in the Gayest city in the world (certainly the most Gay-friendly), and yet they claim to have never heard of "It Gets Better"? Then claim they didn't make the video at all (although one of the two did correct himself on this when shown the video)?

It seems to me that these players need to take a look around, once the get back to SF, and realize that those thousands of LGBT people around them... That's - to a large degree - their fanbase. A fanbase they just insulted.

I would not be surprised to see these three involved in trades to get them shipped out of the Bay Area soon after the Super Bowl is over. Especially that homophobe Chris Culliver, he's done as a Niner come Monday morning.

I'm asking for evidence and pointing out a couple of facts that are logically inconsistent with the conclusion that they are liars. Everybody else believes that they are lying, seemingly based on nothing more than the fear of being seen as not politically correct or the fear of being seen as not agreeing with SF's gay community, which has reached a verdict based on nothing, and I'm the troll.

OK, let's accept your premise that they'd been lied to. Once they found out that the primary audience for the video was gay kids getting bullied they tried to distance themselves from it.

Or am I getting the wrong impression from TFA?

2013-02-01 07:18:30 AM

DrPainMD: Threads like this are what convince me that Orwell and Huxley were the greatest prophets in the history of man.

The video was pulled from the web site because the players who are featured in the video, which is an anti-bullying video aimed at the LGBT community, are now acting in a manner that goes against their testimony in the video. The web site it is on is a haven for LGBT people to go and see testimony from other members of society saying that bullying they may have experienced from peers in their younger years is merely puerile immature antics and life gets better when you grow up and are around people mature enough to accept other lifestyles. That's the whole purpose. So whether the players are lying or not is completely unrelated to the video being pulled.

On to the players: one player said he "never did the video" or that he "never showed up." He is in the video, so yes he did show up. Therefore, that's a lie. In the video itself, if you watch it, one of the players actually says the phrase "LGBT teens" so it was pretty straight forward who the target of the bullying was. So saying they didn't know the involvement of LGBT community is a lie.

Lastly, the idea that they can say "we're against bullying, but only bullying of straight kids" is a pretty bad statement. And it seems your whole premise in this thread is protecting the idea that this is an acceptable stance for the players to have. But that's where you prove to be a real dummy-- you invoke George Orwell as a defense, but seem to forget a very popular quote in one of his most famous works:  "All Animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."  --Animal Farm

Donte Whitner specifically says in the ad "to let all LGBT teens know 'It Gets Better'."

How did he not know?
