The crash doesn't look that bad until you see the replay from the front.  That's when you see the nose of the snowmobile come down on the dude's head.  I saw it on the YouTubes.

I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure it's a generally accepted medical fact that the human chest and skull, and by-proxy, the brain does not well tolerate the impact of a 450lb Snowmobile traveling at 60+ miles per hour into the back of it, regardless of if you have a helmet on or not.

The fact he had a pericardial tamponade by the article doesn't help things. This was massive, catastrophic trauma looking at the video.

If only that man had an anti-snowmobile rocket launcher, as is his second amendment RIGHT as a CITIZEN of the UNITED STATES, he would not have been HELPLESSLY MURDERED by a CRIMINAL SNOWMOBILE.

Why do libtards want the killing to continue?

The freaky thing is he ended up walking away from the wreck, wasn't til later the problems surfaced.

One fatality in 20+ years of operation. Football in the United States, alone, causes 9 fatalities a year.

I have no data to back this up, but I imagine the combined death toll for those participating int he X-Games sports at any level is higher than 9.

Uhhhh...if you counting non-pro football, you need to count non-pro "Xtreme" sports, right?  I am sure you can find a plethora of fatal accidents of mountain bikers, dirt bikers, or hell probably even some poor teenager eating coping on a vert ramp trying to skateboard.  At some point it is more about sample-size and freak accidents...

I'm not disagreeing with this. When snowmobiles are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.

Or something like that.

Dale Earnhardt's wreck didn't look so bad either, and it obviously killed him. I don't see people screaming that Nascar should stop racing.

Shiat happens. It sucks when it happens, but they know going in that with a lot of your "extreme" (I farking hate that) sports, your risk of injury goes down, because your risk of death increases. Death happens. It happens whether you're riding a snowmobile, skiing (Sarah Burke, for example), or sitting on your goddamn couch, eating Twinkies.

Dale Earnheardt's wreck resulted in massive changes in the areas of driver safety and restraint, and NASCAR policies.

It's unfortunate and sad for his family and friends, but I can't say I feel bad for him. Do crap like that often enough, and it will get you eventually.

At least he died doing what he loved.

I'll be honest, I didn't realize there was a sanctioned sporting event where people FLIPPED MOTHERF***ING SNOWMOBILES.

I don't have a problem with it, in fact, I wish I had discovered it sooner.

2013-01-31 09:49:15 PM
ESPN is going to re-evaulate this event. I dunno, should 450-pound machines be flipped twice in the air, or is this lunacy so The Mouse, Red Bull, 5 Minute Energy, Monster, etc., can sell product?

Head injuries are funny like that. It isn't so much the hit that gets you, as much as it is the swelling/clotting later on.

I know that calling that crash "unlucky" isn't quite the right word considering they're backflipping snowmobiles and all, but it's still pretty damn unlikely that the snowmobile would just happened to come down right on his head in the manner that it did.

Yeah but X Games do take this crap seriously. They know shait will happen and make sure every guy/girl is ok at the end. I'm surprised this happened now after 20 years & not during the summer X Games. I knew 1 woman died last year practicing for the winter X Games but with this, I'm sure ESPN will be super careful next year or scrap the snow cross thing all together.

And he was soooo close to pulling it out. I mean, even if he hadn't stuck the landing, a few more degrees of rotation would've gotten the tips of the skis to contact normally, allowing the suspension to absorb more of the impact, rather than have everything counter-rotate as it did. He may still've flown off the machine, but he likely wouldn't've had it land on him.

2013-01-31 10:25:19 PM
OK, it's sad that he died from the injuries and everything. But a guy should not be trying to flip a machine that weighs around twice as much as he does on a surface that is not conducive to machines moving at high speeds. It's one thing for a motorcycle to flip because those things are lighter (depending on the engine but still within the range of a normal human's weight) and can obtain higher speeds. But a snowmobile? Why didn't anyone bother telling these idiots "hey, this idea is farking stupid and will probably get you killed eventually. So don't do it!?"

Again, it's sad that he's dead. But I don't feel sorry for anyone here.

That's a shame. Things I did snowmobiling as a teenager in the 70s? I shouldn't even be here now. Of course back then a '69 Ski-Doo Olympic 12 hp barely went 45 mph, but I still did some stupid shiat.

They won't be scrapping snowmobiling or anything else at all in the name of being "super careful".

Are you serious? Are you talking about practice? Not the half pipe, not the half pipe, not the half pipe, but practice? I'm supposed to be your token female snowboarder on national TV, and you want to talk about practice? How am I supposed to make the double snowmobile flip deaths less likely with practice?

This one time  at the X Games Caleb Moore's snowmobile wouldn't start. The mechanic told Caleb his problem. "Oh, it looks like you've blown a seal." Caleb Moore , wiping his mouth nervously, replied, "Oh, no, that's just snow..."

How many people play football and consider 9 deaths, and then consider how many skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers etc... die each year?  Just because they aren't in an event doesn't mean they aren't playing the sport.  They put on the pads, they play football, if someone gets on a snowmobile, they are doing the same, but actually in a safer manner since they aren't doing flips.  In Michigan alone there were 12 snowmobile related deaths in 2012.  I will see your 9 and raise you 12 from one state.

Watched the LiveLeak video and cringed each reply.
I remember seeing the kid walking away after the wreck be assisted on ESPN, but didn't see what LiveLeak showed. I don't think I like that sport anymore.

Yikes, not feeling too witty now.
