All right, now I want to try horse.

2013-01-31 08:18:27 PM

Pin Fiften Clob: The fact that horse meat is so taboo boggles my mind.  I would personally not eat it, but I don't see what the big deal is.  I can understand the customers being upset since it wasn't advertised as such, but whatevs.

It's because people humanize horses. It's the same reason people (at least in the West) don't eat dogs... we are socialized to attach very human qualities to them. Probably a lot of it has to do with the strong horse racing culture. Japan, for example, has attached no such qualities to horse meat, and sells it regularly.

2013-01-31 08:20:07 PM
On one hand I would like to try it, but this is coming from a slaughterhouse in Poland that is sleazy enough to purposely mislabel their product in order to defraud so who knows what kind of food safety practices they maintain there.

And besides, it's only small amounts so I wouldn't really get an idea what it tasted like.

I still like burger king. A little horse meat, so what?

2013-01-31 08:21:18 PM
Well, good-bye Burger King. The sh*tty decor that hasn't changed since the early 90's and the surly staff wrre dragging down your stock value, but this is sure to punt you right into insolvency. Say "hi" to Hostess and Sharper Image for us.

horse meat or pink slime? you decide

I just saw that they now have an avocado swiss Whopper. I don't care if it's platypus, I am trying that.

This article made me so hungry, I could eat a horse!

2013-01-31 08:24:33 PM
I've had burgers in England and I've been saying for years the meat didn't come from a cow.

2013-01-31 08:24:44 PM

brantgoose: What a waste of perfectly good horsemeat and beef. I mean really. It's not as if horsemeat is poisonous. It is probably less poisonous than regular hormone and antiobiotic-laden beef. And having seen a few Whoppers in my time, I expect that horse meat can only improve them.

But no, it IS potentially poisonous.
As much as you complain about the antibiotics used in beef cows, the medications given to horses are NOT regulated with the intent that the animal will be used for human consumption.  They could well have been given medication not considered to be safe humans to consume indirectly.

It's "probably fine", but there's no regulation here and there is some risk.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: eraser8: Are horses less delicious than cows?

Not trolling...I'm seriously curious.

/voted against the California ban on selling horse meat for human consumption

No, actually, they're not. They're also lower in fat, higher in protein, for some odd reason (despite the lower fat content) more tender than many cuts of beef and have a slight sweet, rich taste. I didn't realize I was eating horse meat when I was actually eating it, but when I was told later what it was (after I pronounced it yummy, of course) I reflected on the fact I'd just eaten part of Flicka and then just kind of shrugged.

If you don't tell me what I'm eating before I eat it and I like it, I'm not upset later when I find out what it was when it was alive. At least I haven't been upset by the source of the deliciousness yet. I'm sure there are limits (other people, my pets - things like that).

But you won't know that your limit is other people - until you try other people.

JasonOfOrillia:

There's nothing wrong with horse meat.

I doubt there's anything wrong with human meat for that matter, but it's not usually considered a civilized delicacy like horse is in some countries.

Beef is geting more tasteless all the time, so I've pretty much switched to pork and lamb when it's within reach. And of course turky & chicken, and catfish -- I love strongly fishy catfish.

Goat and venison are great; goat you can sometimes find in the "ethnic" markets, and I wish I knew a hunter to buy venison from. Rabbit and frog taste like chicken to me and chicken's much cheaper.

I still haven't tried horse, camel, llama or ostrich, and I'd like to be able to find and afford buffalo steaks instead of the frozen ground stuff -- which could be polluted with cow meat.

So what's the problem? Thy should admit there are other meats in their burgers and charge more so the "foodies" will flock to it.

And I have never eaten human flesh. Not as far as I know anyway. Unless maybe it was mixed in with potted meat or Spam at the plant.

brantgoose: For all I care, they could put kangaroo in the burgers

Wasn't there some scandal with McDonalds back the late 70s about using 'roo meat?

Horses are beasts of burden, and pets..... Cows are neither.... its not hard to see this.

Same reason dogs are off limits, but deers are not...

One thing I do know: deer is delicious. Particularly in jerky form.

Next time you go to Mexico, order some up. They eat a lot of it there. I had it there as a steak type dish (best way I can describe it) and in Norway, it is eaten as a salami type thing (so it's most likely mixed with other meats). Apparently I'd been eating it every summer for years while growing up and never realized it until much later.

But it's so lean you have to cook it very slowly on very low heat or it shrivels up.

While they promise 100% beef the burger was only found to contain 0.1% horse DNA... meh. Not going to change the flavour.

Horse meat is delicious, if you are ever in France and see a restaurant with a gold horse head out front go in and try it.

/You can probably find horse meat in American Restaurants I've never looked.

RealAmericanHero: I'm not sure why it's not okay to eat horses, to be quite honest.

I'd say cultural history like most other diets.  For horses, I'd assume it comes from at least in Europe from a sense that they were much more valuable for war and work and transport than being slaughtered.  The economic benefit turns into a moral edict and as a legacy of that with the horse we get people who take it to the extreme like the Amish who in many cases who love their horses for work and transport more than the modern stuff.

2013-01-31 08:30:42 PM
If we gave horses more guns, they'd be less likely to be eaten.

I thought Popeye stopped the horse trafficking back in the 70's

Exactly. Not much fat in it. Horse is actually similar to bison, sweeter, more flavour, and less fat than beef.

The US exports a lot of horse meat. But we aren't allowed to buy it. Seems unfair.

Any farkers know how to get real mutton in the states? most places use goat and call it mutton.

Isn't mutton just lamb?

And, I love lamb chops.  They're available pretty much everywhere.  If I want goat, I have to go to a Caribbean restaurant.

Am I misunderstanding the term "mutton"?

Meh, I have eaten raw horse meat in Japan (Basashi). It is damn tasty.

2013-01-31 08:37:00 PM
Today I found $2 in the Wal-Mart parking lot and treated myself to a Rally burger. They actually fry the patties there instead of reheating them like McDonald's. It was actually tasty, perhaps because there might have been earthworm or rat mixed in.

By the way, if you're a resident of California and ate at a Burger King in the UK, you've probably committed a felony that will net you two years in prison.

There's nothing in Prop. 6 about needing to know it was horse.

RealAmericanHero: I'm not sure why it's not okay to eat horses, to be quite honest.

They're "work" animals. In the middle ages, lords of the land didn't want peasantry getting the idea that it was ok to eat the farming machinery.

2013-01-31 08:37:33 PM
The problem isn't that it contains horsemeat. The problem is that they say they are selling beef. The fact is it contained some sorta meat besides beef. The fact remains the "beef" the are selling contains more than just beef. It includes pork, sheep and horse. Or at least they were at the grocery stores. That is fraud. And they lied about it.
