The poor thing just lifted its head when I tapped it with a towel. It was going down to 2 F that night and I suspected the bat would die. So I called the local wildlife rescue group. It only took one call! The local bat rescue woman came out and got the bat, which we named Mary. Mary now lives with two other silver hair females, eats lots of meal worms, and will be released in the bosque in the spring. Thank goodness for kind-hearted and brave people who run animal rescues - even for animals that can seem scary.

Notes
Crystal clear notes chime
Across the heavens,

Another soul rises,
Bright shining it ascends.

Such a wonderful essence,
Richly colored.

Purple of Compassion,
Bright blue of Joy,
Red of anger,
Green of wanting,
White of forgiveness.

What a delightful vision,
Glorious Scent.

I rise,
Venture forth on frail limbs.
Seeking,
To glimpse that Light.

Drawn to an irresistable
Presence.

I am timid,
Racked with sorrow,
Pain.
No one has ever loved me.

Yet the Shining Soul
Sees me,

Crouches,
Gathers me,
In it's arms.

Enfolds me,
The Stray.

In one brilliant moment,
I am set free,
Stray no longer.

Loved.

I am complete.

What do you do after that????

I am taking several days off, before I jump back into the sub pool. I am sad to be leaving. But at the same time I am happy to be out in the general population. Shining moment of my day? Being able to tell a kid they didn't have to stay after school with me. She earned it. I haz a proud! She was over the moon happy. She has been really working hard on her behavior, turning in her contracts etc..positive improvement. I am going to see her tomorrow, just to tell her how proud I am of her.

Grandma was also a published poet, she donated all the proceeds to her local county library.

I remember joking about her trying to feed half the area wildlife, raccoons, deer, birds, squirrels (not deliberately), opossums, rabbits, you name it.  She had crumbs for wrens, home-made suit (yes, she had her own recipe for bird food) that brought in everything from downy woodpeckers to pileated ones, sugar water for hummingbirds, fruit feeders for orieles, mixed seed for song birds, then corn for deer and rabbits, and dog food for raccoons.  And a water feature with a pump for everyone to get drinks.  At least one momma raccoon weaning little ones found lying in that quite soothing on the mammary glands.

I have all my stuff out of storage now and moved into my HUGE garage.
The horse trailer I bought made moving stuff so much easier. It must ride very well as nothing shifted around even with rough roads and train tracks. Lets hope the boys like it.
I need to get the house livable now so I can get all the critters and myself moved to the farm. We have been taking Fiona with us and she seems to like getting out of town. It is so peaceful away from traffic and trains and all that noise.
I have to rebuild the front steps today and hang a new front door. then I have the weekend to get at least one bathroom working.
If I move the microwave and fridge in I can camp there as I re do the inside of the house. I will try to get pictures of it today. It will be a lot of work but that is what keeps me going.
The Budweiser commercial made me cry- I miss my boys so much- they will be coming home in march. I will be forever grateful to my friend for keeping them safe for me. I came very close to sending them back to the retirement farm in FL.

Yay! It is Caturday! Gosh what a looong week! One of my students admitted to cutting herself..her arm looked like Edward Scissors hand had been at work. I cannot tell you how sad it made me. And then, my long term sub position ends next Tuesday. Big sigh. I love the staff, but running the in school suspension unit. No. Not only do I see nothing but the trouble makers, but I have to be stern all day long! And that is not my purrsonality! I want to talk and joke and just, be someone they can talk to, you know?

So stressed. I came home for lunch and spent most of it snuggling with kitteh.

I'm not really watching. AMKHF is flipping between the superbowl, puppy bowl and some movie.

Now that the game is over, I have to reiterate that for the first time in years, the game was better (still up for grabs with 4 seconds to go in the 4th quarter?) than the commercials (which on the whole, were "meh" at best this year) IMHO, YMMV.

Has anyone been following the "cats are ebil murdering beasties" articles of late? Supposedly cats kill billions of mammals and avians each year. Well, turns out the authors of the most recent paper used faulty data manipulation. Gee, big shock there.

When my Mom's cat Cindy was alive and hunting, she made it possible for the neighbors to have strawberry patches, spring bulbs, and a mole free lawn. After she passed, the neighbors all complained they were over run with wee beasties. Top predators have their place, why is that so hard for some people?

Hey, folks.. been busy today, and it,s cold !    Feral Fred has disappeared.. let him out yesterday morning, last seen nomming dry food in the utility room.. didn't show up last night.. kept checking the monitor.. empty bed... still empty.. walked all over the neighborhood looking for him.. don't think that anyone could get close enough to grab him.. haven't seen any dogs running loose.. it was rather windy yesterday.. I am hoping that he took refuge under a house somewhere.. I guess I need to empty the utility room and insulate it, and run a heat duct into it.. I also have a gas generator in there.. don't want any electric heaters around that...  as fat as Fred has gotten, he won't be starving... just hope that he,s ok...

Thank you so much for the good thoughts.  I am going through the panic phase right now.  The sonogram picked up something that could be cancerous.  I am really hoping it is not.  We don't have very many friends or family so my daughter will be on her own while I'm in the hospital for three to five days.  We are both afraid and trying our best to hope for the best.  I feel like I have so much to do to get ready and not enough time to do it.  We have been through so much and now this.  I have to have faith that all will work out.

A worried looking kitten with impossibly huge eyes. Cutie!
img.photobucket.com

This is a Margay "Tiger" Cat cub.
img.photobucket.com

It also is very cute with impossibly huge eyes. They're wild cats native to the rain forests of Mexico and range all the way down to the rain forests of South America. They can also spend their entire lives in trees, which is why they're sometimes called a "tree ocelot" even hunting their prey by leaping from branch to branch, though many also hunt on the ground. They're smaller than an ocelot and more agile. They've even been spotted hanging upside down by one paw from a branch. Now how awesome is THAT?!? How sucky is it they are poached for their pelts, are rare and are classified as "near threatened"? Seems like all the really cool critters are near threatened, threatened or endangered. BAH!

Yay! That is a CSB! I like bats. I like mice and they look just like little flying mice (well, most of them, some are weird looking), which would explain the German word for "bat" being "fledermaus" (flying mouse). They're also great for insect control.

Kinda sort CSS - When I was younger I used to tease them when they'd come out of their home (under a bridge) by throwing pebbles in the air. They'd go into a dive toward the pebble then realize at the last minute "hey, that's not a bug/my dinner!" and then veer away. I don't do that anymore. As a chubby chick I'd be ticked if someone started offering me a giant salad, a nice salted caramel mocha and a chocolate chip cookie - and then snatching it away at the last minute. I'd be so ticked, I'd probably hurt them. I've obviously become a much nicer person in many areas as I've aged. I've never purposely hurt animals, but I did tease wild animals from time to time. I just didn't realize that was probably hurtful in its own way until I hit my teens.

This one looks like it's just saying "Oh,um, hai?"
img.photobucket.com

This one obviously has much stronger opinions about being bothered by humans. "Blah! Put me down! I'm scary! Blah!"

The one thing they both have in common? They are, to me, absolutely adorable! SQUEEEEEE!

Real Women Drink Akvavit: Terrydatroll: That is so pathetic, poor cat. This is a perfect example of why people should have the intestinal fortitude to put down animals when necessary. Nature surely would, in a less acceptable manner for most of you I would assume.

Oh, puh-lease. I'm going out as a Fark headline, I'm sure. How is that unacceptable to be able to amuse my fellow Farkers, even in death? Lack of common sense but a high enough level of intelligence to be truly dangerous to myself is also nature at work, ya know.

This is a cool story and Flipper looked so happy to be off and running. GO FLIPPER! I also hope the kids in that robotics club are now school heroes. They should be!

Thank you Shanrick for the month of total fark! I hope you get this message! I waited for caturday thinking it might be the best way to get your attention.

Conan got stung by a bee or something last week, poor little guy was swatting something then reacted all crazy like a bat out of hell at the end if a walk. Tore himself up somehow while dashing, we think when he was brushing past bushes. Took him to the emergency vet, and he's alright, just had has to get kitty eye drops for a while. And neosporn to his paw and inner ear.

He's doing great and was crawling over me as I write this. So no worries!

one of these days I'll post pics of my kitties.

Though my posts might be late I'll try to post more regularly on caturday threads, in gratitude to shanrick and you all! Happy caturday!

troyz99: tigerose: troyz99: ^^^ Home from the thrift store with his new friend.

How is kitteh today? I am sorry no one was around to comfort you last night/early morning. I am no expert, but I would guess there is a blockage. Or it could be an issue with his bowels, called mega colon. This can be managed by adding fiber to the food. Um...or he ate something that has made him very ill, and it could take time for the toxins to clear his system. Yhe fluids should help with that, along with supporting his liver and kidney functions. Thats the best I can do, need moar coffee!
as
Keep us in the loop please. We care, and we have been there.

He managed a very small bowel movement, which made me ecstatic. We're off to the vet again shortly and I'll let you know what heppens.

Thanks so much you guys...this was my first time posting, and I'm truly grateful for the support!

Do let us know what happens. I worked in Veterinary, but that was over 20 years ago, so now I have a dumb as I've forgotten a lot of things. However, the first thing I thought was "that cat needs a full blood panel, a bolus of SubQ fluids if he's dehydrated and possibly x-rays to check for an obstruction, especially if the panel looks relatively normal." Be aware this is all a possibility, (some of it or maybe even all of it) along with a day stay in the treatment area at the least, if he's still not eating/drinking and if his condition is deteriorating/very poor. I'm thinking he wasn't in as bad of shape as you are or they would have started with that rather than the more conservative treatment. As someone else mentioned, he may have just had an attack of funky tummy as well. I do hope that's all it is and that your boy is on the mend!

Truth be told, the pet parent being in worse shape than the furkid when the furkid is ill is a sign of a very good pet parent! I had to leave veterinary after a few short years (and thousands of dollars spent on edumacation) because a lot of pet parents aren't actually pet parents. They're assholes who somehow got a lovely creature and neglect or abuse it. I couldn't take it anymore. I was beginning to hate people to the point I actually wanted to assault a few of them, and that's just not me.. That's why I like the Caturday folks so much. They're all the good kind and it sounds like you are as well.

I feel kind of bad as I'm usually awake at that hour, but was not this morning as I have been rather sickly myself and my meds make me nauseated and tired. I would have at least been able to tell you to just relax and hang out with kitty, make a bed next to his blanket if you can, and just let him know you're there for him and that I'd hold your hand over the internet.

Don't be shy and post more often. So sorry we had to meet this way. We're all rootin' for ya, so check in when ya can!

syzygy whizz, sounds like you had a very busy day. I have to get out of here and get to the farm. to get the front stairs done. I can't get the rest of the materials up into the house with those rickety things.
We turned on the water at the meter last night, and that is where all the water still is. The pipe ended in the sand right out side the meter box! I still don't have water or power in my name, the electric company can't do it on line or over the phone. The water company can't figure out where I am at all even though it is their meter out front.
I was ready to go and buy all new supply line to the house but I think I can dig around and find the old one. Then I will re connect it to see where the rest of the leaks are. The guy with the bulldozer may have torn it up when he went around the place.
I hope I can get moved next week but we shall see it I can get stuff done in time. I have a job assignment starting the 5th and won't be able to work on the farm unless I can get the water working and one bathroom put together.
Almost forgot, syzygy whizz, can you do online deposits with your checks? It has been a great time saver for me to just scan the things in from home. My credit union is still in Seattle and I have just not bothered getting a local one because I can do everything I need on the computer or the phone.

Had an interesting day today...
Maynerdkitty inspired me to take my social anxiety and agoraphobia by the neck and shake it...and get my ass outta the house, in gear and get some things ACCOMPLISHED.

Needed to run some errands (in this order, cos that's where everything is in relation to each other):
Pick up catfood, deposit paycheck, hit two stores (not everything I want available at the Store Which Must Not Be Named).
Picked up the cat food (Chicken Soup For The Cat-lover's SoulTM adult formula)...and dropped off a bag of cedar shavings I'd gotten to make cedar sachets. Shavings turned out to have almost NO cedar scent, so useless for what I had in mind. Hate waste, so figured the pet store could use the shavings for some of their critters. Turns out they could, so "Thank you!"

Went to bank to deposit paycheck...only to find THE CHECK IS NOT THERE*. Didn't leave it in the car or at the pet store...figure must have left it at home. Feeling scared, nervous, and my recently-fallen-on knee is giving me shiat...I'm just about to bail and go home...but figured I may as well make at least one grocery stop since Store # 1 is right across the street...

In the soda section, an elderly man asks me if I can help him find the 'Pepsi One' (it's the one with the Splenda rather than some other sweetener). I find it, then load 4 12-packs into his cart for him. He tells me "People are nicer to me than I deserve!"
Strangely, I FEEL A LOT BETTER...and even my knee isn't biatching as much.

Feel good enough to make my final stop...where I run into one of the staff and a resident from the group home where I work.
They walked from the group home, so I offer them a ride home once they're done shopping.
Gotta stop at my house first...off-load my cargo...'John' (who has a mutual admiration/adoration relationship with Raven) wants to meet the rest of my clowder and I want to go quickly through my cupboards/fridge and see what I can spare...seems the Shopping Fairy is a little late in showing up.

John is CHARMED by the Oreo Ninja Clowder...cuddles Raven (who is surprised, but very happy to see him), scritches D'Artagnan, greets Riktor, and pronounces Wimsey "Beautiful!"

D'Artagnan takes it into his big royal handsome furry head that he wants to join the party...AND HE WILL NOT BE DENIED.
Remove him from out of the car twice...and he jumps right back in.
"OK kid, just remember, it was YOUR IDEA."

Pick up 'Bobbie' at Walgrens ('Split up...we can do more damage that way!') and we're off to the group home...me, John, Bobbie, D'Artagnan, and a load of groceries.
D'Artagnan behaves very well...first riding in the back window, then riding St Christopher (middle of the dashboard).

We make our destination without incident and unload.
"Hey, John, wait a sec...go get 'Russ'...he hasn't seen D'Artagnan since he was a tiny kitten. Let him see what he grew up into!"
Out comes Russ (I am holding D'Artagnan so he doesn't try to exit the car in this strange neighborhood). His eyes light up, he reaches for my panther-boy and breaks into 'cat-talk'...sorta between baby-talk and cute, friendly noises.
D'Artagnan either likes the attention, or he remembers Russ from the *one* time he met him nearly 3 years ago...
PURR PURR PURR (cheekrub..fingerlick).
Not so sure he doesn't remember Russ...he is scary-smart (caught him giving Riktor and Wimsey a tutorial on 'opening the window'...but that's another story).

Car's unloaded, everybody back in the house...time for me and D'Artagnan to head home.
Even after going for a ride, he still doesn't want to get out of the car when we get home.
I'm forced to resort to one of the familiar-summoning spells (aka 'shaking the jar of kitty-treats').

For whatever reason, I feel much better...got my stuff done (mostly)...and like to think that my actually LEAVING my nice, safe house made a positive (if very small) difference.

* I did find my paycheck, BTW...accidentally left it at home.

Wow that looks awesome! I am so excited for you! Do you have any pics of the boys? Have they put on weight yet?
It is very sandy ground but the grass is coming back well after someone used a bulldozer to clean up after the last tenants.

When the grass grows back in this will be a nice front yard.

I do not have pictures of the boys but I get an update every Saturday. They have both put on more weight, turns out I was feeding them plenty of food but not in the right way, after some trial and error she figured out that giving them access to hay 24/7 was where I went wrong. She is giving them the same grain amount but only letting them have hay 12 hours a day. My boys would gulp their grain and then go back to the hay, eating a round bale every three weeks. All the hay was pushing the grain through them so fast they were not getting any nutrition from it. Why can't I be that way? the more I eat the more I could lose.

Their new ride.
I won't have to trailer them often, but I was worried about living so far out and not being able to move them if an emergency arose.

And then there was the wren who landed on her head when she was filling bird feeders in her home in Arkansas, plucked a few grey hairs for it's nest and flew off as if that was normal wren behavior!

I'm a redhead, so I grew up terrified of some birds. For some odd reason, some birds (especially blue jays) always wanted my hair for their nests and would attack my head and pull my hair out as I ran shrieking toward the house. This is something a lot of redheads I've met IRL have in common, btw, so it wasn't just me. (Yes, I do ask other redheads when I meet them if they were attacked by birds as children) Luckily my hair got darker over the years so now it's more of a light mahogany/auburn kind of red. I no longer attract birds the way I did as a child. Thank the gods for small favors, I guess.

I agree, your Grandma sounds like one of those people that just makes the rest of us feel like we're not doing enough, thereby inspiring us into more action than usual! Gotta keep up with the awesome Grannies of the world, ya know.

Max and Tom have been hanging out in the "red light" district, I think they want to pick up some chicks.
The little weak one was up and fuzzy the next morning and we had the sudden appearance of a little black fuzzy one as well. I have three little chicks, one gold, one black and brown, and one two tone. I have three kitties here, one gold, one black and brown, and one two tone. The cats are aware of this.
My son and I built a neat little brooder that has a locking lid and and expanded steel top. The kitties guard it well.

I cannot imagine having any birds in my house...bad enough when they bring a frog in from the patio (like they did this week...large frog that I was able to rescue before it met a heathen end).

It is so nice to see you back in the saddle, so to speak  I've missed your wonderful stories and pets and all that you do

The kitty ran up the tree,
The kitty ran up the tree,
Her nose went up
And her toes went up
And the kitty ran up the tree.

Why did she climb the tree?
To see what a kitty could see.
But all she could see
At the top of the tree
Was the tip of the top of the tree ---

So---

The kitty came down the tree,
The kitty came down the tree,
Her nose came down
And her toes came down
And the kitty came down the tree.

God morgen, everybodee! Just caught up with the thread and had - had - to look up more pics of the pygmy jerboa. Apparently they have very large ears, they just keep them right next to their bodies all the time. Looking at these two pics, it's hard to tell it is even the same type of critter!

Apparently there are several species of Jerboa, so these may be two different types, but I am still kind of blown away by the little dude's ears! Those things are so cute, I think I'm gonna be sick.

Quick question about gooshy fuds and kittehs. The GoGo Beastie has always liked the Friskies Seafood Sensations pate style gooshy fuds. The past week though, she's turned her nose up at all of the flavors in the pack, including the Salmon, which used to be her favorite. She'll cry and beg for gooshies, I'll give her 1/4 of a can (the most we give her at once), she'll sniff at it and look at me like "what's this shiat?" and then start crying and begging again before just going for her kibble. What gives, man? I even bought individual cans from a different store the other day thinking the case I had bought might be bad, but she's still rejecting her gooshies. The only thing I can think to do is maybe buy a few cans of things like chicken pate flavored or turkey and see if maybe she's just sick of seafood, but other than that, I dunno. Any ideas? She's driving me CRAZY!

Hello everybodeee!

 ^-^
='.'=

I swear, my cats position themselves to get their little tootsies trodden on deliberately!
They are nowhere near when my foot starts to come down, then "MRRRAAAOW!"
Little kitty toes got pinched.
I immediately pick them up, cuddle them and apologize profusely...
all the while giving them the mental fish-eye and thinking "You did that on purpose, admit it!"
I'm assuming I'm forgiven...because it keeps on happening. No hard feelings...

D'Artagnan seems to be a much happier cat since he got his ears hosed out...involved an overnight vet visit, sedation and some SERIOUS ear cleaning...seems he had quite a wax sculpture in one of his ears, causing the constant head-shaking...and possibly moodiness.

Yesterday he was willing to actually SHARE THE CAT TREE with Riktor. Riktor's joining him was very slow and tentative, and he didn't stay up there long, but usually D'Artagnan has at least a 3-foot personal space when it comes to the other cats.

Last night, he jumped up onto the kitty bunkbed that's in the computer room, displacing Raven from the pillow where she was lying.
He had no objection to her moving over about a foot into the bed that's right next to the pillow though...both settled down and snoozed.
He's even been willing to share my lap...although the lap configuration does take a great deal of diplomacy and s-l-o-w movement into position.

Kinda surprising, but nice. He's becoming the merry affectionate boy I brought home from the kitty jail almost four years ago.

tigerose: Notes
Crystal clear notes chime
Across the heavens,

Another soul rises,
Bright shining it ascends.

Such a wonderful essence,
Richly colored.

Purple of Compassion,
Bright blue of Joy,
Red of anger,
Green of wanting,
White of forgiveness.

What a delightful vision,
Glorious Scent.

I rise,
Venture forth on frail limbs.
Seeking,
To glimpse that Light.

Drawn to an irresistable
Presence.

I am timid,
Racked with sorrow,
Pain.
No one has ever loved me.

Yet the Shining Soul
Sees me,

Crouches,
Gathers me,
In it's arms.

Enfolds me,
The Stray.

In one brilliant moment,
I am set free,
Stray no longer.

Loved.

I am complete.

So stressed. I came home for lunch and spent most of it snuggling with kitteh.

Don't get why kids do this. In the past, whenever I thought about teaching I would try to imagine what age/grade range I could cope with. Outside of college students, I couldn't come up with any. Ok, maybe kids 10 to 12. Not 'little' kids, but not not teenagers either. But I'm assuming (in most cases) one has to teach elementary/middle/high school before getting a position in a college, so I will never be able to impart my wisdom.

This is why I could never be a teacher. I couldn't think of any grade I could tolerate. My sister teaches art in the middle school level which I'd think would be the worst grades of all. She loves it. She has her masters in education administration, but loves being in the classroom. More power to her and anyone who works in the school system nowadays. I really would never be able to do it.

She always thought I was the weird one for being an EMT, she thinks it's so gross. I rather deal with sick and dying people than work in a school.

Yay !! I found Caturday !... Great to be here.. got lots done this week... the east coast storm rolled through last night about 1am.. 10 minutes of hard rain, moderate winds..didn't even knock over my trash cans.. others weren't so lucky, according to the news... Fred had retired to his bunk.. checked the monitor and he was laying on his back, totally zonked.... and we are back to the cold again... I will be so glad when spring gets here.. when it gets cold, the Itis boys come calling.. most of the time it,s Art, with an occasional visit from Burse.... one of the 'benefits' of getting older.... I can deal with it.
