Spent 7 hrs. at the hospital today with step-dad for a same-day surgery. Should have been less time, but the surgeon was late. Woke up at 1:30 and couldn't go back to sleep. Don't know how long I'll make it tonight, but I'll try! :D

This tale was in LoveMeow#158 this week.  Such exquisite ear-tufties on Flipper, who I thought the LM recounting said was, or began as, a she.
Wheels like these are what I/we so despurrately wished to get for our late dearly loved Cheeky after she had her stroke in 1993. But that was almost before the Internet, & they weren't as readily available then. Coulda bought her some more time with some ....

http://www.care2.com/greenliving/pygmy-jerboa-video.html1:09 world's cutest mouse

Pygmy Jerboa is one of the smallest mammals in the world. This wee critter tipped scales at 32 grams, just over an ounce. In Kazakhstan, this little rodent is so adored, it's featured on postal stamps.... -- speaking of cordless mice --

Am thinking the children of serving British forces personnel in the Middle East would pick up jerboas as pets.  Someone who signed the comments under this vid, said the one her children collected was called "Jemmy" & lived with them, adored as referred to above, for years.

Yay !! I found Caturday !... Great to be here.. got lots done this week... the east coast storm rolled through last night about 1am.. 10 minutes of hard rain, moderate winds..didn't even knock over my trash cans.. others weren't so lucky, according to the news... Fred had retired to his bunk.. checked the monitor and he was laying on his back, totally zonked.... and we are back to the cold again... I will be so glad when spring gets here.. when it gets cold, the Itis boys come calling.. most of the time it,s Art, with an occasional visit from Burse.... one of the 'benefits' of getting older.... I can deal with it.

It has been a cold and miserable day here. Blowing snow with 30 to 40 mph winds for a temperature of about 2. Jack loves it, I swear the colder the better for him, and Gremie just watches him out the window with the occasional "meow". I also just got my water back after a water main break about 6 hours ago.I had to melt icecubes for everyone's water dish.

Good on the kids for buying wheels for Flipper!

Yay! It is Caturday! Gosh what a looong week! One of my students admitted to cutting herself..her arm looked like Edward Scissors hand had been at work. I cannot tell you how sad it made me. And then, my long term sub position ends next Tuesday. Big sigh. I love the staff, but running the in school suspension unit. No. Not only do I see nothing but the trouble makers, but I have to be stern all day long! And that is not my purrsonality! I want to talk and joke and just, be someone they can talk to, you know?

So stressed. I came home for lunch and spent most of it snuggling with kitteh.

I did not see that. We have an extensive program at our school to combat bullying. We have Campus Impact, that talks about bullying, cyberstalking, sexting etc, and gives the kids tools to use to report and what steps they an take to control the situation. As for bullying, we have this thing called second step. It defines bullying, and gives strategies to overcome it. We have a seperate bully report form for students to fill out,and believe me, it is taken very seriously.

In my time as a sub, I have lost one student to sudden death, one student to suicide, one student who pulled her trech tube so I suppose that is a suicide as well. It has been years, but I still mourn them.

Some well-considered words picked up, after charging ahead with the local amateur radio club rag & not waiting for the District Superintendent's column -- Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Bass lady in TriCitySound chorus, Lompoc CA (Sequoia-Pacifica Region ~12) wrote that.

tigerose: Yay!

Don't get why kids do this. In the past, whenever I thought about teaching I would try to imagine what age/grade range I could cope with. Outside of college students, I couldn't come up with any. Ok, maybe kids 10 to 12. Not 'little' kids, but not not teenagers either. But I'm assuming (in most cases) one has to teach elementary/middle/high school before getting a position in a college, so I will never be able to impart my wisdom.

Hope it's not too painful!

Middle school is 6th to 8th grade. So right about the ages you would like to be around. I like Middle school. They are very cat like. Sometimes they just need a gentle voice, a soft paw, and a set of listening esr..sometimes they need a good no claws barred verbal smack.

Yeah.. Art wears out his welcome rather quickly but insists on sticking around.. after many years of crawling around under houses and climbing into attics, all in the pursuit of repairing ac,s and furnaces, etc.. seems some things don't bend like they used to... years ago, I could fit through an opening the size of a cinderblock... have had to dig my way under houses to get to a floor furnace, only to find that there was a pit underneath it which was full of fuel oil from a broken pipe.. good thing that the furnace wouldn't work.. the pit would have burned for a month....

Will say for TheIceQueen's benefit, or lack thereof, that I did hear of the pre-teen's suiciding due to bullying. Also that the 15 yr old in the band spirit line who was shot & killed in Chicago jusr recently did an anti-bullying vid when she was 11 or 12. As Gabby Giffords said, we gotta stop losing our young youth this way --

Did you see the story down here in Columbus area where the 11 yo killed herself due to bullying. WTF is wrong with people today!

Crystal clear notes chime
Across the heavens,

Another soul rises,
Bright shining it ascends.

Such a wonderful essence,
Richly colored.

Purple of Compassion,
Bright blue of Joy,
Red of anger,
Green of wanting,
White of forgiveness.

What a delightful vision,
Glorious Scent.

I rise,
Venture forth on frail limbs.
Seeking,
To glimpse that Light.

Drawn to an irresistable
Presence.

I am timid,
Racked with sorrow,
Pain.
No one has ever loved me.

Yet the Shining Soul
Sees me,

Crouches,
Gathers me,
In it's arms.

Enfolds me,
The Stray.

In one brilliant moment,
I am set free,
Stray no longer.

Loved.

I am complete.

This is why I could never be a teacher. I couldn't think of any grade I could tolerate. My sister teaches art in the middle school level which I'd think would be the worst grades of all. She loves it. She has her masters in education administration, but loves being in the classroom. More power to her and anyone who works in the school system nowadays. I really would never be able to do it.

She always thought I was the weird one for being an EMT, she thinks it's so gross. I rather deal with sick and dying people than work in a school.

Mrs CDK: Happy Caturday!!

Hey, this Caturday story was on my blog 2 days ago...

AnimalPalooza - High School Students Help Flipper The Cat Go Mobile

Happy Birthday!

2013-02-01 02:25:17 AM

tigerose: The worst sound in the world is the one your cat makes when you accidentally step on them. I trod upon Eli's tootsies earlier tonight. He is still mad at me! Somehow,"I didn't see you" isn't making him feel happier.

Hello everybodeee!

 ^-^
='.'=

I swear, my cats position themselves to get their little tootsies trodden on deliberately!
They are nowhere near when my foot starts to come down, then "MRRRAAAOW!"
Little kitty toes got pinched.
I immediately pick them up, cuddle them and apologize profusely...
all the while giving them the mental fish-eye and thinking "You did that on purpose, admit it!"
I'm assuming I'm forgiven...because it keeps on happening. No hard feelings...

D'Artagnan seems to be a much happier cat since he got his ears hosed out...involved an overnight vet visit, sedation and some SERIOUS ear cleaning...seems he had quite a wax sculpture in one of his ears, causing the constant head-shaking...and possibly moodiness.

Yesterday he was willing to actually SHARE THE CAT TREE with Riktor. Riktor's joining him was very slow and tentative, and he didn't stay up there long, but usually D'Artagnan has at least a 3-foot personal space when it comes to the other cats.

Last night, he jumped up onto the kitty bunkbed that's in the computer room, displacing Raven from the pillow where she was lying.
He had no objection to her moving over about a foot into the bed that's right next to the pillow though...both settled down and snoozed.
He's even been willing to share my lap...although the lap configuration does take a great deal of diplomacy and s-l-o-w movement into position.

Kinda surprising, but nice. He's becoming the merry affectionate boy I brought home from the kitty jail almost four years ago.

Noooooo!  Poor Eli!  Will he milk it and gimp around the house?  lol

Right now he is giving me the stink eye, I'm not going to let you touch me, here see my back, treatment. He will get over it. But not until he makes me feel terrible!

Think this may be a time for Apology Tuna?
Don't have any pics...just wondering if it works.

tigerose: Crystal clear notes chime
Across the heavens,

Another soul rises,
Bright shining it ascends.

Such a wonderful essence,
Richly colored.

Purple of Compassion,
Bright blue of Joy,
Red of anger,
Green of wanting,
White of forgiveness.

What a delightful vision,
Glorious Scent.

I rise,
Venture forth on frail limbs.
Seeking,
To glimpse that Light.

Drawn to an irresistable
Presence.

I am timid,
Racked with sorrow,
Pain.
No one has ever loved me.

Yet the Shining Soul
Sees me,

Crouches,
Gathers me,
In it's arms.

Enfolds me,
The Stray.

In one brilliant moment,
I am set free,
Stray no longer.

Loved.

I am complete.

God morgen, everybodee! Just caught up with the thread and had - had - to look up more pics of the pygmy jerboa. Apparently they have very large ears, they just keep them right next to their bodies all the time. Looking at these two pics, it's hard to tell it is even the same type of critter!

Apparently there are several species of Jerboa, so these may be two different types, but I am still kind of blown away by the little dude's ears! Those things are so cute, I think I'm gonna be sick.

Quick question about gooshy fuds and kittehs. The GoGo Beastie has always liked the Friskies Seafood Sensations pate style gooshy fuds. The past week though, she's turned her nose up at all of the flavors in the pack, including the Salmon, which used to be her favorite. She'll cry and beg for gooshies, I'll give her 1/4 of a can (the most we give her at once), she'll sniff at it and look at me like "what's this shiat?" and then start crying and begging again before just going for her kibble. What gives, man? I even bought individual cans from a different store the other day thinking the case I had bought might be bad, but she's still rejecting her gooshies. The only thing I can think to do is maybe buy a few cans of things like chicken pate flavored or turkey and see if maybe she's just sick of seafood, but other than that, I dunno. Any ideas? She's driving me CRAZY!

Max and Tom have been hanging out in the "red light" district, I think they want to pick up some chicks.
The little weak one was up and fuzzy the next morning and we had the sudden appearance of a little black fuzzy one as well. I have three little chicks, one gold, one black and brown, and one two tone. I have three kitties here, one gold, one black and brown, and one two tone. The cats are aware of this.
My son and I built a neat little brooder that has a locking lid and and expanded steel top. The kitties guard it well.

I have all my stuff out of storage now and moved into my HUGE garage.
The horse trailer I bought made moving stuff so much easier. It must ride very well as nothing shifted around even with rough roads and train tracks. Lets hope the boys like it.
I need to get the house livable now so I can get all the critters and myself moved to the farm. We have been taking Fiona with us and she seems to like getting out of town. It is so peaceful away from traffic and trains and all that noise.
I have to rebuild the front steps today and hang a new front door. then I have the weekend to get at least one bathroom working.
If I move the microwave and fridge in I can camp there as I re do the inside of the house. I will try to get pictures of it today. It will be a lot of work but that is what keeps me going.
The Budweiser commercial made me cry- I miss my boys so much- they will be coming home in march. I will be forever grateful to my friend for keeping them safe for me. I came very close to sending them back to the retirement farm in FL.

The kitty ran up the tree,
The kitty ran up the tree,
Her nose went up
And her toes went up
And the kitty ran up the tree.

Why did she climb the tree?
To see what a kitty could see.
But all she could see
At the top of the tree
Was the tip of the top of the tree ---

So---

The kitty came down the tree,
The kitty came down the tree,
Her nose came down
And her toes came down
And the kitty came down the tree.

laulaja: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/pygmy-jerboa-video.html1:09 world's cutest mouse

That video was great but at the very start it looked like the little guy weighed in at 3.2 grams! Truly a wee little beastie.

The pregnant female was a recent acquisition and since meerkats are territorial, they were worried the meerkats in residence would not take well to a preggers female. Are YOU cooking or otherwise creating anything wondrous (or at all, really) at the time when GoGo starts begging?
She might be smelling what you're making and want a sample...

You'd be surprised (or maybe not!) at what cats enjoy sharing with their humans...f'rinstance, I'm expected to share my bread-butter-and-cheese sammich with D'Artagnan...

She always comes down around the same times every day, and it's never when I'm cooking. I tend to step on her tail or little toesies 'cuz she never has figured out not to stand directly behind my heels while I'm busy with something, so she stays out of the kitchen when I'm cooking and for at least a good hour afterward when she knows I'll be cleaning.

I tried giving her a spoonful of albacore tuna for her lunch treat and she turned her nose up at that and went straight for the kibble. When she's eating the kibble she positions herself so she can stare me down and give me a "look at what you're reducing me to doing!" kind of look. It's bizarre. It's also too bad she can't tell me what she wants in English.

Once upon a time, my grandmother was known as the local wild bird rescue person.  Somebody brought her a tiny chick and she set it on a pie plate in the oven, turned off except for the pilot light, to keep it warm.  A friend came over, saw it and joked about the bird being a bit underdone!

Yes, dedicated hooman at work. I know that the modern Maine Coon has a lower maint. Coat than the old style cats. I used to have an old stle Coonie..Tortie Tabby. Orange Black, cream..wonderful cat, but her coat was a nightmare..think cotton candy...as an undercoat! Eep.

I cannot imagine having any birds in my house...bad enough when they bring a frog in from the patio (like they did this week...large frog that I was able to rescue before it met a heathen end).

It is so nice to see you back in the saddle, so to speak  I've missed your wonderful stories and pets and all that you do

Wegies are pretty low maintenance as far as their coats go as well. I give GoGo Beastie a good brushing about once a week, twice a week when it starts warming up and the undercoat starts thinning itself out a bit. I figured out a long time ago no one is ever going to get all the unnecessary undercoat off the cat and it will be dropping fur like crazy half an hour after the brushing, so now I just get the loose stuff off of her and book her an appointment for next week. Still takes about an hour. At least she lets me brush her belly, though. A lot of cats don't go for those kinds of shenanigans.

That is one of the few stories of hers I remember.  There was also a robin that was brought to her as an unfledged chick after a storm knocked it out of it's nest.  She raised it on hamburger and raisins.  I saw it come and perch on her hand to beg for raisins for several years back when I was in grade school.  That bird returned every year for years to beg for raisins.

And then there was the wren who landed on her head when she was filling bird feeders in her home in Arkansas, plucked a few grey hairs for it's nest and flew off as if that was normal wren behavior!

Grandma was also a published poet, she donated all the proceeds to her local county library.

I remember joking about her trying to feed half the area wildlife, raccoons, deer, birds, squirrels (not deliberately), opossums, rabbits, you name it.  She had crumbs for wrens, home-made suit (yes, she had her own recipe for bird food) that brought in everything from downy woodpeckers to pileated ones, sugar water for hummingbirds, fruit feeders for orieles, mixed seed for song birds, then corn for deer and rabbits, and dog food for raccoons.  And a water feature with a pump for everyone to get drinks.  At least one momma raccoon weaning little ones found lying in that quite soothing on the mammary glands.

I was bad and spent all morning looking through Ebay at old stringed instruments a few weeks ago.
Too bad I have no money. Or good. Not sure which.

I love traditional instruments of any culture. It's part of the reason I listen to so much European heavy metal. You just haven't lived until you've heard someone screaming at you in Norwegian about drinking and then toasting everyone (skål!), electric guitars blaring - and rocking an accordion at the same time. It's more common in Pagan metal, but I've heard traditional instruments used in death metal and melodic black metal from all over Europe. I think the Pagan metal group Heidevolk's use of the Hurdy Gurdy is AWESOME. I didn't even know what a Hurdy Gurdy was until I heard an unfamiliar instrument and looked it up. It looks HARD to learn to play, that's for sure.

I know what you mean about eBay, btw. My Gran's bday is coming up this month, day after my sister's and one of my cousin's birthdays, so cousin's gift box of goodies is already on the way to Norway (she likes stuff from California, so that's easy!), my sis is easy as she likes weird, goofy things, just like I do (I got her a ceramic piggy bank shaped like a pig, of course, with flowers painted on its butt) and just now found a lot of 25 "Romantic Suspense" novels by authors I'm pretty sure Gran's never read, so I grabbed those for her. Almost everything but a couple of California t-shirts and the piggy bank came from eBay.

Now, some cats!

And then there was the wren who landed on her head when she was filling bird feeders in her home in Arkansas, plucked a few grey hairs for it's nest and flew off as if that was normal wren behavior!

I'm a redhead, so I grew up terrified of some birds. For some odd reason, some birds (especially blue jays) always wanted my hair for their nests and would attack my head and pull my hair out as I ran shrieking toward the house. This is something a lot of redheads I've met IRL have in common, btw, so it wasn't just me. (Yes, I do ask other redheads when I meet them if they were attacked by birds as children) Luckily my hair got darker over the years so now it's more of a light mahogany/auburn kind of red. I no longer attract birds the way I did as a child. Thank the gods for small favors, I guess.

I agree, your Grandma sounds like one of those people that just makes the rest of us feel like we're not doing enough, thereby inspiring us into more action than usual! Gotta keep up with the awesome Grannies of the world, ya know.

Yes, because of her, I have had a litter of raccoon kits play under my feet.  I was sitting in a chair with my feet on the rail of the balcony while they played under the chair.  Seen Pileated Woodpeckers on the balcony while in her living room, or on a tree only 10 to 15 feet from the balcony.  Her living room was on the second floor of the house.  Had one evening I walked out with her, wondered if "it" was a cat or dog, only to see it was an owl when it flew off when we got too close.

Grandma's sonbuckles looked better than the one's Mom and I make, we'll get 'em right one of these years!

I do not have pictures of the boys but I get an update every Saturday. They have both put on more weight, turns out I was feeding them plenty of food but not in the right way, after some trial and error she figured out that giving them access to hay 24/7 was where I went wrong. She is giving them the same grain amount but only letting them have hay 12 hours a day. My boys would gulp their grain and then go back to the hay, eating a round bale every three weeks. All the hay was pushing the grain through them so fast they were not getting any nutrition from it. Why can't I be that way? the more I eat the more I could lose.

yobbery: tigerose: I exchanged emails with Salem Witch today. She and Susie are fine. She had a cold and went offline, and is now getting back into the swing of things. Can you imagine? She didn't think she would be missed!! Silly witch. :)

I has a happee! I missed my favorite witch.

Had an interesting day today...
Maynerdkitty inspired me to take my social anxiety and agoraphobia by the neck and shake it...and get my ass outta the house, in gear and get some things ACCOMPLISHED.

Needed to run some errands (in this order, cos that's where everything is in relation to each other):
Pick up catfood, deposit paycheck, hit two stores (not everything I want available at the Store Which Must Not Be Named).
Picked up the cat food (Chicken Soup For The Cat-lover's SoulTM adult formula)...and dropped off a bag of cedar shavings I'd gotten to make cedar sachets. Shavings turned out to have almost NO cedar scent, so useless for what I had in mind. Hate waste, so figured the pet store could use the shavings for some of their critters. Turns out they could, so "Thank you!"

Went to bank to deposit paycheck...only to find THE CHECK IS NOT THERE*. Didn't leave it in the car or at the pet store...figure must have left it at home. Feeling scared, nervous, and my recently-fallen-on knee is giving me shiat...I'm just about to bail and go home...but figured I may as well make at least one grocery stop since Store # 1 is right across the street...

In the soda section, an elderly man asks me if I can help him find the 'Pepsi One' (it's the one with the Splenda rather than some other sweetener). I find it, then load 4 12-packs into his cart for him. He tells me "People are nicer to me than I deserve!"
Strangely, I FEEL A LOT BETTER...and even my knee isn't biatching as much.

Feel good enough to make my final stop...where I run into one of the staff and a resident from the group home where I work.
They walked from the group home, so I offer them a ride home once they're done shopping.
Gotta stop at my house first...off-load my cargo...'John' (who has a mutual admiration/adoration relationship with Raven) wants to meet the rest of my clowder and I want to go quickly through my cupboards/fridge and see what I can spare...seems the Shopping Fairy is a little late in showing up.

John is CHARMED by the Oreo Ninja Clowder...cuddles Raven (who is surprised, but very happy to see him), scritches D'Artagnan, greets Riktor, and pronounces Wimsey "Beautiful!"

D'Artagnan takes it into his big royal handsome furry head that he wants to join the party...AND HE WILL NOT BE DENIED.
Remove him from out of the car twice...and he jumps right back in.
"OK kid, just remember, it was YOUR IDEA."

Pick up 'Bobbie' at Walgrens ('Split up...we can do more damage that way!') and we're off to the group home...me, John, Bobbie, D'Artagnan, and a load of groceries.
D'Artagnan behaves very well...first riding in the back window, then riding St Christopher (middle of the dashboard).

We make our destination without incident and unload.
"Hey, John, wait a sec...go get 'Russ'...he hasn't seen D'Artagnan since he was a tiny kitten. Let him see what he grew up into!"
Out comes Russ (I am holding D'Artagnan so he doesn't try to exit the car in this strange neighborhood). His eyes light up, he reaches for my panther-boy and breaks into 'cat-talk'...sorta between baby-talk and cute, friendly noises.
D'Artagnan either likes the attention, or he remembers Russ from the *one* time he met him nearly 3 years ago...
PURR PURR PURR (cheekrub..fingerlick).
Not so sure he doesn't remember Russ...he is scary-smart (caught him giving Riktor and Wimsey a tutorial on 'opening the window'...but that's another story).

Car's unloaded, everybody back in the house...time for me and D'Artagnan to head home.
Even after going for a ride, he still doesn't want to get out of the car when we get home.
I'm forced to resort to one of the familiar-summoning spells (aka 'shaking the jar of kitty-treats').

For whatever reason, I feel much better...got my stuff done (mostly)...and like to think that my actually LEAVING my nice, safe house made a positive (if very small) difference.

* I did find my paycheck, BTW...accidentally left it at home.

Anybody out there with some cat advice to share at his hour?
Upset right now, but here's what I can say... Beast, my buddy of 7 years, hasn't kept food or water down since Thurs. We went to the vet Fri AM...urine test fine, no indication of blockage from the vet ( who has treated him from day 1). We were given cerenia injection, fluid administration, and sent home to see what happens. Took home an oral enema, which he didn't keep down, and a tube of laxatone with instructions to keep administering. Gave him approx 4 tbsp of laxatone so far, and it's staying down, but nothing coming out either end.
He will not eat or drink. Has been on his blanket on the bed all day and night.
We have another appt today (Sat) for follow up.
Money is tight, but I will figure out a way, even if we have to do surgery. I'm losing my shiat here, I'm all alone, and it's 3am. No one to talk to.
Somebody want to help me out?
More laxatone?
He seems comfortable, but this is ripping me apart.

syzygy whizz, sounds like you had a very busy day. I have to get out of here and get to the farm. to get the front stairs done. I can't get the rest of the materials up into the house with those rickety things.
We turned on the water at the meter last night, and that is where all the water still is. The pipe ended in the sand right out side the meter box! I still don't have water or power in my name, the electric company can't do it on line or over the phone. The water company can't figure out where I am at all even though it is their meter out front.
I was ready to go and buy all new supply line to the house but I think I can dig around and find the old one. Then I will re connect it to see where the rest of the leaks are. The guy with the bulldozer may have torn it up when he went around the place.
I hope I can get moved next week but we shall see it I can get stuff done in time. I have a job assignment starting the 5th and won't be able to work on the farm unless I can get the water working and one bathroom put together.
Almost forgot, syzygy whizz, can you do online deposits with your checks? It has been a great time saver for me to just scan the things in from home. My credit union is still in Seattle and I have just not bothered getting a local one because I can do everything I need on the computer or the phone.

Poor kitteh. I lifted the loveseat to retrieve a couple toys for the Queen of the Realm, and she stuck her paw under the leg without me realizing it. I set the thing down on her paw. She loudly let me know something wasn't right and I immediately lifted it off her leg. To this day, if I lift a piece of furniture to retrieve her toys, she relocates under the dining room table until I go get her and comfort her a bit.

How is kitteh today? I am sorry no one was around to comfort you last night/early morning. I am no expert, but I would guess there is a blockage. Or it could be an issue with his bowels, called mega colon. This can be managed by adding fiber to the food. Um...or he ate something that has made him very ill, and it could take time for the toxins to clear his system. Yhe fluids should help with that, along with supporting his liver and kidney functions. Thats the best I can do, need moar coffee!

troyz99, hope Beast will improve. Sometimes a cat will just Get A Lurk On because he feels like it.
maynerdkitty, best luck with the water. Pipe emptying into sand is less than no help. Some lines that were funny at first, now are less so:

Lucas Electric, from USAF veteran in Plumbicon's chorus
The Lucas motto: "Get home before dark."
Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they do still have a claim to "sudden, unexpected darkness."
Lucas -- inventor of the first intermittent wiper.
Lucas -- inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.
The three-position Lucas switch -- DIM, FLICKER and OFF.
The other three switch settings -- SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.
The original anti-theft devices -- Lucas Electric products.
"I've had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never experienced any prob...."
If Lucas made guns, wars would not start either.
Did you hear about the Lucas-powered torpedo? It sank.
It's not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm's Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance.
Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner, "How can you tell one switch from another at night, since they all look the same?" He replied, "It doesn't matter which one you use, nothing happens anyway!"
Back in the '70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn't suck.
Quality Assurance phoned and advised the Engineering guy that they had trouble with his design shorting out. So he made the wires longer.
Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas makes refrigerators, too.
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Joseph Lucas invented the short circuit.
Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: check the position of the stars, kill a chicken and walk three times sunwise around your car chanting: "Oh mighty Prince of Darkness protect your unworthy servant."
Lucas systems actually uses AC current; it just has a random frequency.

Original Lucas torpedo tale, have misplaced link to it:
Some years ago, I worked with a fellow with the very British name of Ken Appleby. He had a Spitfire, I had my '74 B, and we used to motor out to Pickwick's Pub and throw darts after work on occasion.
Ken used to work for Lucas in the UK, specifically for a division of Lucas that did military electronics. My favorite of his stories was about the time he had been working on a computer-controlled torpedo. It used magnetic core memory to store the programs, which had the advantage of being very non-volatile as well as not susceptible to EMP discharge.
So Ken got to ride on the boat for the first test of the torpedo that used the computer with his program in it. Somewhere out in the North Sea, on a Royal Navy cutter, Ken and his crew launched the first ever run of this new weapon, and Ken learned a new respect for debugging.
The program was supposed to make the torpedo shoot off the boat, dive to a depth at which it couldn't be easily detected, then circle toward the target, climb to striking depth, and hit the target. There were on-board sensors to detect sea level, and the torpedo was supposed to travel at a preset distance below sea level, with constant feedback keeping it on track.
Somehow, somewhere, Ken had multiplied one of the 3D coordinates by a negative number, and this error soon propagated through the transformation matrix (the mathematical construct that models 3D space), with predictable results.
Within instants of hitting the water, the torpedo -- instead of sinking out of visible range -- blasted up and out from the water in a great silver fountain, then continued skipping across the surface of the blue like some sort of deranged wingless flying fish. Worse yet, instead of circling toward the target, it circled all right, but began to return to the ship that launched it. Fortunately it was not armed, but they still detonated the self-destruct on it rather than let it slice through their ship at 50 knots or whatever rate it traveled. Because of the non-volatile core memory, Ken was able to debug the program from what the Royal Navy frogmen could recover from it, and he fixed the problem for Rev 2.0.
But I must admit that the image of the torpedo, splashing happily above the surface of the water like an aroused porpoise, is one that returns to me in idle moments such this. What else would a Lucas torpedo do but try to fly?

I can't find the post in order to quote it.  Earlier someone asked if the cat in TFA was born this way, or if this is from an injury.  I'm not an expert, but looking at the x-rays in the video, my best guess is that it's a birth defect because the cat's ribs are also abnormal.  Also I think that if there was a trauma to torque him around this bad, it probably would have killed him, or paralyzed him.  I know the Fark headline says he's paralyzed, but he has control over his back legs and tail, you can see that in the video as well.  It's like he has Scoliosis, but I have never seen a case this bad, in a person or in a critter.

Do let us know what happens. I worked in Veterinary, but that was over 20 years ago, so now I have a dumb as I've forgotten a lot of things. However, the first thing I thought was "that cat needs a full blood panel, a bolus of SubQ fluids if he's dehydrated and possibly x-rays to check for an obstruction, especially if the panel looks relatively normal." Be aware this is all a possibility, (some of it or maybe even all of it) along with a day stay in the treatment area at the least, if he's still not eating/drinking and if his condition is deteriorating/very poor. I'm thinking he wasn't in as bad of shape as you are or they would have started with that rather than the more conservative treatment. As someone else mentioned, he may have just had an attack of funky tummy as well. I do hope that's all it is and that your boy is on the mend!

Truth be told, the pet parent being in worse shape than the furkid when the furkid is ill is a sign of a very good pet parent! I had to leave veterinary after a few short years (and thousands of dollars spent on edumacation) because a lot of pet parents aren't actually pet parents. They're assholes who somehow got a lovely creature and neglect or abuse it. I couldn't take it anymore. I was beginning to hate people to the point I actually wanted to assault a few of them, and that's just not me.. That's why I like the Caturday folks so much. They're all the good kind and it sounds like you are as well.

I feel kind of bad as I'm usually awake at that hour, but was not this morning as I have been rather sickly myself and my meds make me nauseated and tired. I would have at least been able to tell you to just relax and hang out with kitty, make a bed next to his blanket if you can, and just let him know you're there for him and that I'd hold your hand over the internet.

Don't be shy and post more often. So sorry we had to meet this way. We're all rootin' for ya, so check in when ya can!

Terrydatroll: That is so pathetic, poor cat. This is a perfect example of why people should have the intestinal fortitude to put down animals when necessary. Nature surely would, in a less acceptable manner for most of you I would assume.

Oh, puh-lease. I'm going out as a Fark headline, I'm sure. How is that unacceptable to be able to amuse my fellow Farkers, even in death? Lack of common sense but a high enough level of intelligence to be truly dangerous to myself is also nature at work, ya know.

This is a cool story and Flipper looked so happy to be off and running. GO FLIPPER! I also hope the kids in that robotics club are now school heroes. They should be!

/"Hold my akvavit and watch this!"
Protip: troll the politics tab. They're easier to rile up because no matter how outrageous what you "say" is, it's totally believable someone really thinks that way - and it's fun! MUAHAHAHAHA!

"you don't live here" (part 3)

Having lost a good cat of 17 years, I vowed "never again" - and then she showed up, at the end of the front path. Petite, green-eyed and ragged she sat, every day, never in reach and silent as a midnight park.

"you don't live here" i told her through the screen door

And then, one day, I heard the tiny mewling sounds of kittehs from the concrete planter by the door.

"you slut" i told her - and refused to look - i don't want cats again, they break your heart

But, babies are babies and they grew enough to tumble their way out of the planter and into the light - two of them, with that "i have no depth perception" squiggly walk. One wearing a striped zebra suit and the other a mimi-me copy of the silent intruder. Oh, she took great pride, laying in the sun and nursing and teaching them how to hunt lizards.

"you aren't staying" i told her - but - one mother to another, I began feeding her. She would eat when given space and we began calling the kittehs "fuzzles" as in "don't step on the fuzzles" as they grew bold enough to lie on the porch steps. Surely I could find a home for two tiny horridly cute babies - but, no - not even my son's 43 million facebook friends volunteered....and they were growing daily, getting curious, hanging out by the front door. and, worse, enjoying being petted and fed!

and then I came home from the grocery and found the zebra-coated girl had come to a bad end and, damn it, i wept over another cat. Not just her, but her brother who now had no one to romp with and, oh, was he lonely when his silent slut of a mother was away. I thought only I saw this but my son did and took the opportunity to bring the solo fuzzle INTO MY HOUSE.

"Well" I reasoned "it's just the one - and we can get him fixed" because, you see, I had begun laying plans to capture the silent green eyed round heels and spay her - How do you catch a cat who is part smoke and mirrors? My plans ran from a can of tuna and a box to a dart gun.....obviously she was not leaving.

kevinboehm: I can't find the post in order to quote it.

I didn't pay that much attention to the x-rays but still figured it was a congenital issue just from the cat's name. LOL!

Just wanted to say hi to everyone! I don't get around much here these days because RL is getting busy. I do miss hearing about all the (mis-)adventures of all your kitties, doggies or human friends. The big day is finally getting closer (4.5 months) and I have done exactly what I thought I would do: procrastinate. At least the invitations are ready to be sent out. :P

I have a contract until the end of March which also is getting close with so much left to be done as well. First real work post-grad school so it's important to get things done right even though this project had some rocky times.

WHICH DOG IS GUILTY???
Anyone who thinks a dog does not remember or does not feel guilt has not lived with a dog. Watch the expressions on the faces of these three dogs when they are asked the same question at the same time. Note the immediate reaction of the two darker dogs on the right side. This is hilarious.

"you don't live here" part 4

Having decided to fix, and (sigh) keep the baby fuzzle and his feral mother, life intervened and I was called out of town. I returned to find my son had bonded with the rapidly growing (and rather good looking) kitteh and a report that his mother had stopped showing up for her daily noms served with my verbal abuse about her loose ways.

"well" i thought "thats cats for you"

Then she re-appeared, as ever - silent and distant but i had plans to catch her and spay her so I sat out and spoke kindly and (sigh) she came ever closer. I thought we were bonding, that we had an understanding - until i heard - AGAIN - the tiny mewling of kittehs from the same damn concrete planter.

"okay" i said "enough is enough" and i looked to see what she had done now

I saw one very tiny kitteh.....and what appeared to be.....an equally tiny possum. Apparently the green-eyed interloper was more of a slut that I thought. "really"? i asked her "interspecies, too?" and as i sat there, perplexed, she rubbed against my legs. Progress, of a sort - but what the HELL was that in the planter?

parasol, Fang Q for vols 3 & 4 of U Don't Live Here.
Another goggie-related tale from AFN Funny:

HOW TO INSTALL A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM:
1. Go to Goodwill, St Vincent dePaul or similar and buy a pair of size 14-16 men's work boots.
2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of "Guns & Ammo Magazine".
3. Put four giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines.
4. Leave a note on your door that reads...
Bubba,
Me, Marcel, Donnie Ray and Jimmy Earl went for more ammo and beer. Be back in an hour. Don't mess with the pit bulls. They got the mailman this morning and messed him up bad. I don't think Killer took part, but it was hard to tell from all the blood. Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the house. Better wait outside. Be right back.

ALL kittehs should be concerned about my dieabeetus. It's all their fault! (with help from the goggies, the skwerls, the bunnehs, the zooborns, the....)

THAT is funny! Cats remember as well, as this tattle tale kitteh and guilty kitteh more than adequately prove.

Oh, and a badass biker kitteh and a badass "I can relax anywhere, in any position, cuz I'm a cat" kitteh.
