Hagel doesn't have to be brilliant, but he does have to have some integrity.  There are some pretty good people behind him to execute the downsizing of the military - which better proceed at a slow pace, lest we get ahead of ourselves. (The Defense Industry downsizing does have a lot of secondary effects, similar to what happens when the Auto Industry was in jeopardy.) He seems to have enough sense to understand that Iraq was a poor idea, after going along like everyone else - at least he had the nuts to say so before most other Republicans did.  He seems to think that the State Department should have the lead in dealing with Iran, which I agree with.  And the Pro-Israeli lobby should have doubters - they certainly have plenty of "Yes" men.  Having a couple of "Let's hold on here" folks is not unwarranted.

He's not a great choice but he's far from the worst choice.  People seem to forget that John Kerry was President Obama's first choice for SECDEF.  I think that Republicans are thrilled that a Democrat from the Senate was lost to fill a cabinet position, and would have loved to see another Democrat leave the Senate for another role, such as SECDEF.  Hagel is actually a Republican fall guy, in that sense.

The hard work of executing policy change (Gays in the military and Women in combat) has turned the corner, and there will be folks who have been studying these issues for years behind him; they were there before he gets there and they'll be there after he's gone.  All he has to do is keep the wheels turning and show that he's steady and relatively dependable.

Watched/listened to the whole thing. Beyond respect and admiration for one's service to their country, they all recognize the special and historic bond between the U.S. and Israel. Get a room.

//also, republicans suck

Poor old John McCain. Still trying to live up to his daddy's expectations. Sadly, he never will. He'll just keep getting angrier and more irrelevant and then fade away and die.

The moron is a democrat who ran as a republican in order to win a seat from democrats who were even dumber than he was.
His Iranian ass kissing is unacceptable, but keep on sucking up. You realize he is against women's' rights, homosexuality, etc...
You know, everything liberals stand for.

Looks like you and the other libtards are doing the crying.

You geniuses DO realize that the GOP got trounced in the last election, right?

Hmmm.  Jennifer Rubin.  Well, ok then.

2013-01-31 07:57:22 PM
The view from the Washington Post's resident right-wing hack.  Who cares what Hagel thinks?  The important issue is that whatever he thinks is on the same page as the Obama Administration.  Reject his nomination and they will just appoint nominate else who will implement the Obama policy.  If policy is the issue they should just come right out and say it.  I guess Obama's center- right policies just are not right-wing enough for these guys.   And of course John McCain who has been wrong on just about every bit of foreign policy this century.   So let's heed his advice.

2013-01-31 07:58:41 PM

RexTalionis: I enjoy Jennifer Rubin articles. The entire comment section more or less consists of people telling her off.

Heh.

Too often, you confuse your own wishes with reality. This is not a very enjoyable style.

Why not write the reality, which is that you wish for his nomination to "sink"?

Had you employed this latter technique during the Presidential campaign, rather than the former, you would have had a different reception.

Yeah, not too bad. Though her reputation was shiat well before the Post ended up in such a clusterfark of a situation where they actually ended up hiring her.

2013-01-31 07:59:33 PM
Earlier today, a bunch of Washington Post people were frantically sending out statements pointing out that Jennifer Rubin is not a reporter.  Farking losers.  If you are embarrassed by the shiat she says (and you SHOULD be), then don't farking hire her to write for your goddamn paper.

FishyFred: Even more damaging was the brilliant - there is no other word for it - interrogation from Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) who challenged him to name one senator "intimidated" by the "Jewish lobby" and to name "one dumb thing" the United States did as a result of that intimidation. He couldn't.

Oh fark you. Anyone who denies the gravity exerted on politicians by organizations like AIPAC is living in a fantasy world. It's not an easy question to answer. They don't force anyone to do anything. They just drag the discourse in their general direction and let everyone else do the work.

Like every lobbying organization and political party in their history. What makes this one worth singling out?

LoveAllServeAll: Poor old John McCain. Still trying to live up to his daddy's expectations. Sadly, he never will. He'll just keep getting angrier and more irrelevant and then fade away and die.

One has to wonder how long he can keep up the angry old man routine. If not for his health than for the fact that, at some point, he will get brushed to the side. I suppose his little tirades of being "very concerned" about everything that "wherever he goes, people are telling him" this or that is wrong (TorT being whatever is the current Democrat issue for that day) still has some traction. However, I also think he is reaching a point of diminishing returns with this self-proclaimed renegade-ness and sage political wisdom. Aside from being an angry white dude who yells a lot, he does not appear to be too effective a politician.

I guess the GOP will drive the McCain mobile along with the steam coming out of the hood until the engine seizes or the transmission gives out. Then they will take the plates off, file down the VIN , leave it at the roadside and call a cab for the rest of the trip.

Rush was right; the job is meaningless.

Obama will make the strategic decisions (as he should) and the generals will make the tactical decisions.

Go on.

You have some logic in there right?

Uranus Is Huge!: If Hagel can't get confirmed, President Obama should just go into full troll mode and nominate Rand Paul or Mitt Romney or John McCain, and then sit back and watch the feeding frenzy commence.

This got you smart-ed.

Also, Jennifer Rubin's farts from her mouth and poops through her keyboard.

This got you funny-ed.

A long-time Capitol Hill Democrat astounded by the hearing tells me, "It is very clear from the testimony that Sen. Hagel will not be bringing the potato salad to the next Mensa picnic."

Nine farking hours of watching a man being nominated to US Secretary of Defense have to explain why he wouldn't just drop down to his knees and suck the cawk of Israel when called.  Watching this display reminds me is the sheer jaw dropping exhibition of power Israel has over the US government.  I's farking frightening that a self believed sovreign nation and world's lone superpower could be so utterly wrapped around the little finger of another nation like this.

2013-01-31 08:32:31 PM
Gosh, ease up on JWP. If you are going to criticize the creature as "disingenuous" at least provide citation. I feel that it actually believes everything that flows from it's keyboard to it's screen.

And it is right! Only a democrat would attempt to compromise at all. Even if the compromise is a weak republican.

If this was actually about speaking the truth rather than a meaningless dog and pony show, Hagel would have said "All of you are intimidated by the Jewish Lobby.   That's why I'm sitting here answering 9 hours worth of questions about how willing I am to suck Israel's cawk when called upon as opposed to how I would protect Americans as Secretary of Defense.    This whole circus proceeding is nothing but an awe inspiring and frightening display of the influence and muscle that Israel has over the American Government and how America is nothing more than their little biatch.   Usually even the cheapest whore gets left cab fare on the night stand for a taxi ride home, we're the whore that actually pays the john."

THIS. We may not like them, they may be Nazi Germany's literal reincarnation, but legitimacy is a completely separate question from whether they're our enemies. Far as I'm aware, Iran's government is as legitimate as any other.
