Iceland has laws to regulate human names? That's something countries actually do?

I guess I learned something today.

A couple of countries have baby naming regulations.  I assume they're mainly for cultural preservation.  A nice side benefit is that you avoid situations where parents go off the deep end when naming their kids.

"I am very happy... Finally, I'll have the name 'Blær' in my passport," she said of the court's verdict.

I think Germany does as well.

They like regulations though.

I suppose it must have something to do with the fact that everyone's surnames are legally the father's first name with "son" added at the end for males, or with "dóttir" added at the end for females.  (In other words, if you lived in Iceland and had a son, his last name would be "Giantrexson," and your daughter's last name would be "Giantrexdóttir.")  So I guess they must have to approve first names to avoid confusion.  Or something, I dunno.

I don't know what someone does for a last name if their father's identity is unknown. Adopt the mother's surname, or use her first name plus "son" or "dóttir"?  Dunno.

This is the official site regarding naming and based on the sentence  A child may only be named by those who have custody of the child.it leaves it open for interpretation.  Single moms, same-sex couples, and so on are also covered by that.

I've known several Icelandic girls, they have really cool names. Their names are almost like Native American names.

Swan Maiden
Ocean Maiden
Maiden of the Gods.

Considering some of the really bizarre names American parents name their kids, I can honestly say I'm OK with this.

Yes, as do Germany, Sweden, Japan and Denmark. In some countries it's so the name may not negatively affect the well-being of the child.

Blær was not one of the 1,853 female names approved by the Icelandic Naming Committee

Really? You had a list of 1,853 and you settled on #1,854 or so?

\names should be used & reused from your family tree
\\sure, that'd mean I would've been named Tiburce, but it would've been fun to explain that one to everyone....

My cousin is convinced that this signifies the end of the Icelandic language. He claims that in twenty years, when he's teaching Medieval Studies (I say working at Burger King, but whatev), he'll be able to point to this incident as the thing that brought about the end of the Icelandic language.

Funny he supports the Icelandic government approving names but fears the US government and it's web of conspiracies, spies, and avengers.

I predict this name will become very popular, and there will be a big surge in kids with this name. Given the fact that Icelandic directories go by first name it is sure to get really confusing; they will have to develop a plan to figure out who is who. It will be called the "Which Blaer Project."

In this case and some of those does it have anything to do with the language lacking male/female pronouns and other linguistic sex indicators? Not knowing the other languages I'm unsure but I recall helping a Finn with her English a few years back and how much of a struggle she had with him/her and the like because of this. It seems like a plausible reason, to prevent confusion.

France, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Japan, Sweden, Denmark, Argentina, Morocco, New Zealand, Finland, Malaysia...lots or countries limit what you can name a child. The strictness of the laws varies, with Denmark for example having a list of 7,000 approved names and other countries like New Zealand banning specific names on a case by case basis (Stallion, Yeah Detroit, Fish and Chips, Twisty Poi, Keenan Got Lucy, 4Real, Sex Fruit, Satan, Adolf Hitler).
