Is this one of those laws that everyone is/was obligated to follow simply because it was enacted by a majority of lawmakers, who quite possibly represented the true will of the majority of the people at the time?

Seriously. We're the state that forced the Supreme Court once and for all to decide on whether or not mixed race couples could marry and live with one another. Spoiler alert: Virginia lost that decision.
