Seriously. We're the state that forced the Supreme Court once and for all to decide on whether or not mixed race couples could marry and live with one another. Spoiler alert: Virginia lost that decision.

Still a law here in Florida too. Before my wife and I were married, we lived in 2 separate apartment complexes that never even brought up the issue. You know they're not going to turn away business. Seems the only people who would care are people who have noisy neighbors and wish to punish them

Oh, something fun I learned in college, most areas in VA still have laws on the books that more than 2 or 3 women cannot live together alone because it would constitute as a brothel. Unless they had a House a Mother. But wouldn't that make it worse?

Anyway, my sister found out that one when she and some girlfriends tried renting a house together and were unlucky enough to find a landlord who actually cited this law as to not rent to them.

and the text of the decision of trial court in that case may be one of the most ignorant and racist things ever committed to paper by a supposedly learned man:

"Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix. "

Which, likely, ironically enough probably violated the Fair Housing Act, but small landlords can get out of ocmplying with that law

Virginia isn't really that Bat Guano Crazy or the home of weird news like Florida. We also are afforded the good fortune of having some of the best institutions in the country and one of the most educated cluster of districts in the country to dilute the amount of "Hold my beer and watch this" populations in the state. However, what we do have are crazy conservative politicians who shame us but I don't consider it enough to denote our own tag. Even if we did end up mailing crocheted vaginas to our state legislature. (Might be NSFW if your cube mate has a stick up their tush)

See this is one of the reasons that church and state should be kept seperate.  As soon as any person in the position to make decision on laws uses God as an argument, they should be immediately thrown from office.
This is something that this country has completely lost sight of.

I remember reading about a political race in Australia where the candidate mentioned that God was on his side.  He got laughed out of the room.  That, to me, makes much more sense.

Wow, Virginia is like Dubai (and substancial portions of the Middle East)?  How progressive.

Friend of mine rented a place (in Dubai) to a couple from Europe, found out they weren't married (so cohabitating is against the law there), got REALLY concerned when the woman got pregnant (the concern was "what if the hospital asks for a marriage license during prenatal checks or at delivery).  Never heard of any problems since, so either the couple bulled their way through it, got married before the baby arrived or moved back to Europe.  Just as well, pretty sure that anywhere with draconian laws like that would take a dim view of "aiding and abetting" sinful behaviour, I would have hated to fly out there for the purposes of trying to bail my friend out of jail for simply renting a house to a couple.

I don't think NOVAns would at all mind not being saddled with the rest of Virginia... although the mountains ARE pretty.  I think the rest of Virginia would miss NOVA though -- without NOVA, who would pay for those beautiful smooth roads that all Virginians get as a god-given right... except those of us paying most of the taxes?

There's a new controversy about building a new Toll Road along side 64 in Hampton Roads. Now, I know that area is a disaster when it comes to driving and that 64 is utterly burdened and that they deserve to have more than one point of entry/exit to the shore. However the billions being sunk into that project seems to be pissing everyone north of Fredericksburg off. Don't even get me started on the cluster f*ck that's Tysons Corner now.

Well, that's just because the bastards around Wiliamsburg won't allow another bridge over the James, and Suffolk County is too broke to build a causeway through the swamp to the bridge that is already there.  NOVA can whine all they want but the money is supposed to come from the I-95 and I-64 toll slush fund.  No tolls happen, no roads happen.

In related news, Southside has become a 200 mile wide peninsula of North Carolina, with 'No Toll Roads' signs every half-mile.

In VA, they don't investigate or do an autopsy on someone if they die in their own house.  I assumed like most states that they would, but no.  My Dad died and was creamated and it would have been nice to know exactly what he died from, and not just "some kind of heart attack".  Damn backwards-ass hillbilly state.

If I were living in sin in VA i'd totally feel guilty about breaking the law and my girlfriend and I would go straight to the police office to turn ourselves in. It would be even more fun if I was gay. Be all "My boyfriend and I have been cohabitating. In a romantic way. I'm talking penises in all orifices here, and sleeping in the same bed and mixing our laundry and everything."

All couples who "not married to each other, lewdly and lasciviously associate and cohabit together" in VA should come clean right now, let the law do with them what it will, just to see what happens and have a laugh.

Eh they should eliminate the gas tax and just replace it with tolls along 95 and 66.  That will never happen though as people hate paying what their fair share is.

KatjaMouse: dj1s: So, now can we have a Virginia tag?  'cause this place is Bat shiat Crazy if there ever was such a place.  The good news is that we are about to export our BSC governor to the rest of the country...enjoy, and...you're welcome.

Holy shiat. I wish I'd known about that sooner, I love naughty crafting!

/no such thing as NSFW where I work luckily... my boss has a vagina handpuppet on her desk...

KatjaMouse: tentaculistic: I don't think NOVAns would at all mind not being saddled with the rest of Virginia... although the mountains ARE pretty. I think the rest of Virginia would miss NOVA though -- without NOVA, who would pay for those beautiful smooth roads that all Virginians get as a god-given right... except those of us paying most of the taxes?
/Not that I'm bitter that I literally broke my car on potholes in NOVA
//That was 10 years ago - that same stretch of road is still just as bad
///I sigh in nostalgia for the gorgeous roads in poor rural Virginia

There's a new controversy about building a new Toll Road along side 64 in Hampton Roads. Now, I know that area is a disaster when it comes to driving and that 64 is utterly burdened and that they deserve to have more than one point of entry/exit to the shore. However the billions being sunk into that project seems to be pissing everyone north of Fredericksburg off. Don't even get me started on the cluster f*ck that's Tysons Corner now.

The entirety of Hampton Roads is a cesspool for driving conditions.  Every single route is congested, and what used to be a quick 20 minute drive, now takes an hour or more at times.  It's farking ridiculous.  I'm not even sure that cohabitation law has been enforced for years, and much like any other silly law like this, it's been repealed in many other states.  Virginia just seems to lag behind most of the other ones in these cases by a few years.

The biggest hold back for Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and the other cities that make up Hampton Roads is CBN and Pat Robertson.  I really wish that farker would die soon.  Or at the very least have his lips sewn shut and then have him locked away somewhere where he can't do any more damage. If it wasn't for them we more than likely wouldn't have this cohabitation law still on the books.  Along with the ton of other stupid laws like it.

Don't forget about the toll plaza they want to build near Elkhart on I-95.. They want to get all the people passing through Virginia north or south bound to pay, but made sure that it was south enough from Richmond and the DC commuters that t wouldn't piss offimpact the NOVA's and the people that commute to DC.

don't get me started on the the govs plan for eliminating the fuel tax. replacing it with a increase in the general sales tax, and charging electric and hybrid vehicle drivers $100 a year to register their vehicles.

Eh they should eliminate the gas tax and just replace it with tolls along 95 and 66.  That will never happen though as people hate paying what their fair share is.

Heck give VA residents with EZ pass tags heavy discounts....

that thing about paying fair share and never happening? yeah...

There is no way in the name of the great unholy horned horror that would give even residents a discount on anything. And for the proposed sales tax/gas tax thing.. is that it benefits Heavy and non-fuel efficient vehicles.. not much of a complaint from me in that regard as I do have the obligatory. seemingly state issued full sized pick up truck ( I inherited it). But the idea about Having the EV and HB vehicles incur a higher registration fee is because they are lighter, and don't pay as much for gas (tax wise) than the heavier vehicles. it's meant to off set the gas tax revenue lost via their very nature, but, what is the point if they want to get rid of the gas tax anyways?

Katja! My fellow Vienna Farker!

This little town sucks...and so does the rest of NoVA lol.

But you really have to live in the area in order to truly understand why NoVA is so different from the rest of Virginia lol.

But yeah, with all the farking taxes we pay for road shiat, this area is always the last to see any of it.

KatjaMouse: Squawky: Virginia must have a lot of studio and 1-bedroom apartments if having room mates is against the law.

Ahem. http://www.snopes.com/college/halls/brothel.asp

Yeah... it's bullshiat. Sorry :)

SevenizGud: Maybe subby thinks Virginia is a city in Massachusetts.

No, there is an area around here called "Witchduck." But see, it wasn't always called that. The original name was "Witch Dunk." Betcha can guess why they called it that.
