Honestly I don't get the hate on people have for the IRS.  Most of the arguments have been covered here already, but my god these people have a difficult job.  Making sure that the income taxes from the entire country are filed even vaguely correctly must be a herculean task, especially given that lots of people fark up their taxes "honestly" ie. making claims they think are legit but aren't.  The crooks (and I'm sure there are many) are on top of that.

Up here in Canada, I've found CRA to be one of the nicest gov't departments to interact with.  They know that taxes are hard and they are more than happy to provide you with information either on the phone or on their well-organized website.  They can offer some exceptionally reasonable repayment plans if you owe them money you don't have, because they're not out to destroy you, they just want everyone's taxes to be paid correctly.  They are a whole lot better to deal with than, say, the student loan people :(

Now I don't want to scare anyone, but the IRS is hiring people that couldn't get into the TSA.  Then again, perhaps this has been the plan all along...

You can have adequate staffing at the IRS make sure taxes are properly calculated and collected, or you can shoestring their budget and have Congress cover the shortfall by raising taxes on the honest or going deeper into debt.  Option B is for if you're either stupid or an asshole.
