There should be a network here in the states that just airs weird foreign TV shows.

Don't even bother translating them.

I swear I would watch it all of the time. The weirder, the better.

That article was written in 2008.

It's not news, it's five-year-old not news.

In Austin, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas once a year would host Super Happy Fun Monkey Bash with a compilation of clips from Japan's most surreal television shows and commercials.  They were always stomach-cramps-and-tears-streaming-down-the-face-from-laughter hilarious.    If you're into this kinda of stuff, you might can find it in the cult classic bins of some indie video stores near you.   You might can even find some stuff on teh intrawebbings.

1. Japan: Don't Laugh

Yeah... that show isn't called "Don't Laugh." The show is Gaki No Tsukai Yarahende. The No Laughing segments are some of the more entertaining things they do, but it's not the only thing on that show. I stopped reading after that because this person didn't bother doing anything more than the slightest bit of research or anything past a YouTube search of "crazy foreign TV!"

That's part of the reason I never watched tv when I lived there...my friend kicked me out when we were watching a dub of a bad South Korean romance drama and I couldn't stop making fun of it.  But that had nothing on the regular shows.

TV shows? Heck, just the commercials in Japan are more entertaining than most US TV.

Some of my personal favorite foreign game shows:

Japan:

Run For Money Tousouchuu (searching on 全員逃走中 will find others)  (Tag. To the 11th Level of Awesome).

Battle For Money (Dodgeball + Live Action Legend of Zelda = ???)

Isreal

Raid The Vault: (Who Wants to be a Millionare? + Break the Bank - 80s version = This)

The UK:

The Crystal Maze featuring "Reckless" Richard O'Brien. (Yeah. Riff Raff.) Action adventure.

The Chase straight Trivia Show. Nothing weird here, just awesome.

Bit of a CSB

My wife is Japanese and when we were there a couple of years back i was flipping channels and settled on what appeared to be adults racing round a go-kart circuit on kids tricycles.  I asked my wife about it, after a quick glance at the screen she nonchalantly informed me it was an endurance 24 hour race and wandered off.  That evening I checked and sure enough they were still going.

\ I love Japan

I've only watched the first hour of this year's special so far. The GF loves these too, but she understand zero Japanese so she needs the subs. She hasn't said she'd get angry if I watched the whole thing on my own, but half the fun is watching it with somebody else and seeing the stupid stuff they do. And I don't mind waiting for the fan subs.

I'm disappointed to hear of no Heipo though. He was usually good for a laugh or two. Them going through the desks usually offers up some of my favorite moments. Matsumoto playing with the Downtown action figures in past years was farking hilarious.
