Can't believe I didn't think of Nausicaa...

/one of my first anime
//even if it *was* "Warriors of the Wind"
///just finished reading the beautiful new hardcover
////must have read the story a dozen times

Well, she wasn't in a TV show.  But yes, badass.  Too bad that during the 80s all we had was the stupid dub of that movie ("Warriors of the Winds" of course).  I actually have it on recorded VHS...from the 80s.  I still liked it but didn't really know how dumb it was compared to the correctly dubed version that was released a few years ago (which I also have)...when you actually had famous actors scrambling to be a part of a Miyazaki anime (though Cam Clarke did a voice in the first English version).

Forgot about the TV show prerequisite.

Even "Warriors of the Wind" was pretty entertaining despite the heavy edits, name changes (Princess Zandra) and awful box art.  The heart of the movie was still there and as a kid I found the film pretty compelling.

Glad to have the uncut versions now though.  Master Yupa voiced by Patrick Stewart is pretty awesome.

Still and all the plot and characterizations remained true in the awful WotW import... not like what they did Gatchaman , or Yamato ("Knox got out behind you!"...no he farking didn't...he got shot full of holes)...etc.
I do enjoy my Criterion version with Patrick Stewart as Lord Yaupa.

so far as the "TV show requirement"... 1.... its I09 so who cares...and they also made a "top 10 list" where one slot was occupied by two characters...so again...who cares.

also...lest we forget... Fujiko Mine?

/and to someone else's point , Dana Sterling was like...14-15 years old in Southern Cross...so...yeah pretty much a child.

How could you not include the girl that gave us all our first animated panty shot. In the opening credits of every episode no less.

Oh man, I completely forgot about that and had to go back and check out the opening sequence.  Story checks out:

That's what I was thinking.

Here's a nice rule of thumb.  It's not true for all cases.  "If the cartoon sucks, it was probably from the 80s."

Oh you're just saying that because she was better looking than Dana!  Nova was an over-compensating career chick.  You put Nova and Dana up against a company of bioroids, Nova would freak and Dana would leave them a smoking pile of rubble!

I had the Innova/Nova model... and yes you did just see tits on the model. for some reason (well...Japan) the Innova model had a remove able torso armour to reveal boobs.
Japanese models use a numbered paint scheme... and in the paint guide the nipple color was specified and I actual shelled out $3.95 for an entire bottle just to be "accurate"... I also had to explain to my Mother who walked in while I was painting it. (I was like...14)
I actually got away with the explanation that it was a Japanese model and the Japanese are a bit weird.
Japanese model paint...btw.... farkING AWESOME. way better than testors.

Ok, technically not animated (except for the VHS videos you got with the toys) but the show was still pretty much a cartoon.  So I say Pilot from Captain Power should get an honorable mention.

A badass 80's woman who SHOULD have had a cartoon:

images.wikia.com

Though I shudder to think of how it would look, considering that Metroid only had two games, she had green hair and purple skin in the first game, and Ridley, Kraid, and Mother Brain looked so awful and goofy compared to their designs from Super Metroid on.

Samus wasn't in the cartoon of Captain N (the people who made it said they didn't even know Samus existed, despite the fact they had Mother Brain and Metroids in it). She was in the comics, though, she replaced Simon and Mega Man.

What I would give for a redone Captain N cartoon with everything done RIGHT. Imagine Captain N with this Simon Belmont:

Mega Man X:

the redesign of Pit from Brawl and Uprising:

And 3DS:

Now THAT would be awesome.

And for the villains, Super Metroid Mother Brain:

Eggplant Wizard:

King Hippo:

And have Ridley and Kraid as their sub-generals/elite warriors:

List successes:

Gloria from M.A.S.K. - She carried a lot of weight in that show. She was the only girl so she was included frequently. Also, childhood crush.

List Misses:

While there were tons to choose from, some of the missed badasses were either "villains" like Baroness, or they were just comic relief or "human factor" like April from TMNT. As for the anthropomorphics like Gadget or Ponies? No.

Finally, while there are several strong characters in translated anime series:

- Miriya in Macross/Robotech
- Dana (arguably) in Southern Cross/Robotech
- Rook in Mospaeda/Robotech
- Alura in Voltron/Go-Lion
- Nova in Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato
- Jun/Princess in Battle of the Planets/G-Force/Gatchaman
- (I KNOW I'm forgetting some)

...they weren't distinctly American. The list should have been 80's AMERICAN cartoon chicks.

Be a really short list, then, since the fact there's so many anime women shows that American cartoons in the 80's didn't like strong badass female characters.

That's the problems with Americans, they see "animated" and immediately assume it's for children, no matter what the content or the rating.
