Just read about how the police convinced him to let them send down some medicine and colouring books for the poor kid, and that just hit me as the most wrenching thing I've read today.

From what I've been reading, this guy was nothing like the "shy and very quiet" type you usually read about. This guy was a bona fide nut out in the open and everyone around for miles knew about him.

-- Used to patrol his back yard in the dead of night with a flashlight and shotgun
-- threatened kids with death if they got on his lawn
-- beat a neighbor's dog to death with a pipe and bragged about it with glee
-- Was supposed to be in court that day for a prior incident of threatening neighborhood kids

This guy IS a book you can judge by it's cover. He's never coming out of that hole alive, one way or another.

As a parent, I hope he doesn't take the kid with him. As a realist, ugh. I don't even want to think about it.

Not just threatening the kids, if I read it correctly, but actually shooting twice at a car with a six-month-old baby inside.

This should end up as a case study for our inability to deal with mentally ill folks.  Everyone knew he was nuts, but nobody had the ability to do anything about it.

And, no, this isn't the sort of individual you can pat on the head with a bottle of meds and send on his merry way.

FTFA: "His friends and his neighbors stated that he did not trust the government, that he was a Vietnam vet, and that he had PTSD," Tim Byrd, chief investigator with the Dale County Sheriff's Department, told The Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch blog on Wednesday.

What in the flying f*ck-all does this have to do with this situation? This is f*cking ridiculous and irresponsible journalism. This is only done to bring up the cultural images from things like First Blood and make people think that he's *REALLY* crazy, although PTSD has f*ck-all to do with acting in this manner.

The whole situation is tragic enough but irresponsible journalists (and ignorant jackass spokesmen for the Sheriff's Department) are simply making it harder on people like my BIL, who, like most PTSD sufferers, is less likely to harm innocent people than most civilians.

Let's blame PTSD and all other sufferers by association because coincidentally one guy who is f*cked in the head has also been diagnosed with it.

Blowing his brains out in front of the kid would not be "sparing" him. Unlikely as it may be, I hope he gives himself up.

I don't like the use in the article of the term "anti-American views". Unless he hates Americans, he doesn't hold anti-American views, he holds anti-government views.

Sounds too much like him being called "unpatriotic".

Normally I'm against the idea of grabbing someone off the street and sending him/her straight off to the funny farm just for being "different" (Google up Francis Farmer). If we did that, 90% of everyone would be in a psychiatric gulag.

But this guy was totally off the chain and had no business being at large. He was an asshole towards Humanity and the walking stereotype of a crazy man. If this butthole thinks his little rampage is going to make society cut him some slack and listen to his gripes, then he seriously blew it.

My dad is a Vietnam Vet and likely has PTSD from both the War and when they fired him at his job on trumped up B.S. because his health care was too expensive. He's so dangerous that he sleeps half the day and spends the other half watching TV. He did refinish a bubba'd Japanese rifle the other day, so I suppose that his PTSD did interact with guns. Or something, I'm not sure.

Christ, the guy is obviously, provably nuts. He's a dipshiat Prepper who went off the deep end. Like you do. His status as a vet, and his PTSD, is tangential.
