Yup. To make it in porn as a straight male, you have to basically prove you are worth their time (since any male is going to want to have that career). That means starting in either gay porn or porn no one wants to do (granny, fat chicks, etc). They want to see that you can perform in the worst conditions to make sure you can perform in the best conditions. That and the pay still sucks for straight men (but Ron Jeremy is probably worth a lot due to his fame).

I know an IT guy who put together a porn web site for some people who produced most of their own content.  Back in the day, a straight guy would get into porn by showing up with a girl that was will to do porn.  Porn producers would base their evaluation of the wannabe porn stud based on several criteria:  Can he get it up and keep it up when needed?  Is he dangerous to have around the set?

Basically, it was like any other job.  Are you reliable?  Can you get the job done (no easy thing in the days before Viagra).  Are you emotionally stable?  The male talent in straight porn are just props.  Once porn producers find a reliable prop they keep him on for as long as he can or will go.  That's why you see male talent last for years, or in the case of Ron, decades.  On the other hand, female porn talent has the shelf life of a tuna steak.
