(Slate)   Subby is curious, is it really a 'smart highway' or is it actually UFO landing strips?   (slate.com) divider line 19

So we'll have glow sticks to mark the lanes, cool graphics that changes, lights that go on and off and spinny things at the road side.

They Dutch must really like raves if they want to drive on one.

The UFO Landing Strip is in Des Moines, Iowa. It's for gay aliens.

Aside from the precious snowflakes, how is this better than the reflectors we have on highways right now?

The bonus is that if you get on the highway going the wrong direction, they all reflect red. If you ever see this, TURN AROUND NOW!

Mike Chewbacca: This is the future I want!

We are the greatest country in the history of the world.  We can't afford stuff like that.

For one thing it would be a lot easier to just mix this in with the paint you're already using for the road markings.  Would also be useful on side roads that don't always have reflectors.  Could also be very handy at night in the rain.

If it's bright enough to shine through a bit of snow it would be good.  There are times when you just simply can't see lane markings.

If they could do it cost effectively on roads without lights or reflectors it would be nice.  I hate driving on some roads at ight.

The snowflakes (as depicted in the video at least) would just be distracting.

And the windmills just look like silly

I'd like to see those photoluminescent lane markings charge in Upstate NY in the winter...or fall...or any season other than that one sunny one we get sometimes.

Exactly what I thought when I saw them.  The other stuff looked moderately useful.

I obviously need more coffee.

I had to re-read it three times before I realized the headline wasn't

Why Can't We Have Glow-in-the-Dark Highways Like the Neanderthals?

/I got nothing against the Dutch

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures...and the Dutch.
