Just switch all our investments to Nyquil and we should be fine.

I hope I die first so I don't have to hear the bastards gloating about it.

I thought filling the pockets of the drug companies was the way to fuel the economy? Isn't this why we passed the medicare bill?

/obvious flamebait

But I thought now that we captured Saddam, there'd be no more flu...

The way people are talking I think I could fart and hurt the economy.

ElwoodCuse, that's when we win the war on terror, which is an intangible concept, so we could be at this for a while.

It's called an immune system. Ever heard of one? One day, humans will evolve to not have them anymore.

2003-12-15 03:24:58 PM
Oh, ok Shostie. So that means we have to keep on fighting and fighting and fighting, right?

("Remember when we had a war on drugs, and now you can't buy drugs anymore? It'll be just like that!")

Anyone else think flu shots are overrated? I've never had one and I think I've had the flu maybe twice, and only once really bad.

2003-12-15 03:26:05 PM
Based on all the news over the past 36 hours, there is no more flu epidemic.

Keep pumping more crap through the prompter at Shepard Smith's face, Faux News Channel.

Flu epidemic could spoil U.S. economy's comeback

I went to my doctor and got my flu shot. Dropped trou right there and he slowly eased the needle in, so as to not be too painful.... put both his hands on my shoulders while he did it - thoughtful, caring physician that he is.

("Remember when we had a war on drugs, and now you can't buy drugs anymore? It'll be just like that!")

Man, if this war on terror keeps going the same way the war on drugs is going, I won't be able to buy any terror in the future.

i love the sensationalist press. i really do. they provide so much wonderful entertainment.

and of course there are the priceless conversations you can have with people who -believe- what they're selling.

the news was never the news. it's always been filtered. twisted, editorialized, spun, omitted, sensationalized.

information may be power, but misinformation and misplaced trust is much more powerful.

Challenger recommends stocking up on surgical masks and placing them on workers who are having coughing fits.

We just put a new bong in the break room, solved that problem right away.

The media outlets that are calling this flu season a major disaster are the same ones that break into The Simpsons to tell me it is snowing outside.

I hear the flu will also prevent you from singing in the shower.

IMHO the current "epidemic" is related to:

1. People actually weaken thier immune system when they get themselves artificially injected with dead/modiifed viruses and chemicals.

2. The new "flu mist" is a live virus and millions are now paying $70 to give themselves a live flu infection, and then they go and shed this virus everywhere, putting all the people they go near at risk for catching it, it can also mutate into a new strain theoretically so this is really insane.

3. People get sick, and don't stay home and ail themselves. Instead they come to work/school, go shopping and spray it everywhere.

4. As a society we weaken our immune systems by overusing medicines, chemicals, and eating less raw wholesome foods.

The end.

Where have you been? The news has been pimping out the shortage of flu shots like seamonkey ads in the backs of comic books...

John Challenger,

You are useless. You're clever idea to exploit the situation for personal business gain isn't a clever idea if it is utterly transparent. I bet you wear dockers and a polo shirt to work everyday. I'd be willing to bet that you're sufficiently self-important to feel the need to wear a pager and a cellphone clipped to your belt. Do you talk loudly on the cellphone until the last minute before your plane takes off?

2003-12-15 03:44:55 PM
You're = your

apparently I too am useless

2003-12-15 03:45:31 PM
Cthulus_Toaster Well, unless you have a weakened immune system from some disease, or ar just generally unwell. You can spend the money on something more useful, like boobies on a boar-hog. Or a nice bottle of your favorite type of "hooch". Seriously, the shot would probably not protect you as much as you think it would, indeed it could harm you.

2003-12-15 03:48:55 PM
Gee, and here I thought it might be spending 500 billion dollars a year more than you have.

As I was recovering from this demon flu, I had to revisit my doctor, I was flirting with one of the receptionists after she noticed my Type-o-neg shirt when (literally) an army of old ladies piled in DEMANDING the flu shot. The nice girl said we don't have any go to the health department. The old lady got nastier than the flu itself.

The only other way to make an old lady yell "FU<K" is to get another old lady to yell "Bingo"

2003-12-15 03:50:53 PM
Heh-heh, this is hysterical. I admit I like to watch CNN and Fox when this type of media frenzy takes hold, it's just too much fun. I swear I could hear a chorus of bleats (Ba-aa-aa-aa) in the background last week everytime they had a reporter standing next to a line of tools waiting for the life saving shots for their children.

"This is how the world ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper...."

2003-12-15 03:51:22 PM
Again, you have an immune system for a reason. Use it!
/The more you know....

2003-12-15 03:52:16 PM
Can anyone describe what having the flu is like? Is it like having a bad cold, or is there more to it?

Oh, and bump, well done. You're my hero for the day, laws yes.

2003-12-15 03:55:02 PM
How many people have been killed by this flu?
How many people have been killed by car crashes, lung cancer, shark attacks, or even coconut-palm related injuries?

Okay, I don't know. Look for yourself.

- Car Accidents
- Lung Cancer
- Shark Attacks
- Coconut palm-related injuries in the Pacific Islands (and the Straight Dope rebuttal article)

2003-12-15 03:56:01 PM
3. People get sick, and don't stay home and ail themselves. Instead they come to work/school, go shopping and spray it everywhere.

I don't know about you, but where I work this has a lot to do with the attitude that it's heroic to come into work feeling ill, and somewhat unmanly to take a day off.

2003-12-15 03:56:03 PM
MY LIFE FOR YOU!!

I have the flu.

One bottle of Robitussin down. Ceaseless coughing.
Green stuff.
Cold shivers.
No sleep.

It's like it fatigues you instead of trying to take all your energy.

Really, really sucks.

No, I did not get the shot. I'm in MA.

2003-12-15 03:56:16 PM
That's what one business expert is warning.

Wow, a whole expert.

2003-12-15 03:58:54 PM
I'm with LionHound. It's purely anecdotal, but the people who seem to get the flu the most are the ones who get the flu shot. There's a woman that I work with that got the shot, immediately got sick, and is in pretty rough shape right now.

I've never had a flu shot, and I haven't had the flu for over 20 years.

*knocks wood*

2003-12-15 04:00:19 PM
What're you Yanks whinin' about now, eh?

Try having your local economy tanked by a so-called SARS outbreak that kills 44 people over the course of four months. I think Toronto had more highway fatalities than that during the same period.

-cough- Sheesh!

2003-12-15 04:07:10 PM
LionHound,

1. People actually weaken thier immune system when they get themselves artificially injected with dead/modiifed viruses and chemicals.

This is totally false.

The rest of your points I can't really take issue with, but this one is just wrong.

2003-12-15 04:09:06 PM
I agree with Demetrius I had the flu only once as an adult, never had a shot, then this year, the office I work in (6 people) pretty much insisted that I do. 3 days later, sicker than a dog aaand...got called in to work. Went and coughed on the bosses phone when he was out. Nothin like spreading the wealth around.

/never getting another flu shot, ever
