I suspect a live action movie would treat death a little less casually.. or at least, they'd better.

xanadian: World of Warcraft?  MOVIE!??

*biatchslaps Hollywood*

It says 'Warcraft', so I'm thinking older material, Warcraft III most likely.  The corruption of Prince Arthas, rise of Thrall as Warchief, and the races coming together at the Battle of Mt. Hyjal would make a pretty good movie.. so I HOPE that's what they're doing.  WoW is too vast, really.

Nothing wrong with Source Code, it was a decent flick.

There's plenty of good material to draw from for a Warcraft flick, but I suspect that making it live action is a big big mistake.

I can easily see how its not your thing, especially if you're not a fan of the genre (kind of a niche one, slow space sci fi).  Nevertheless, he did the best movie that genre has seen in awhile so I'd still expect good things from him.

Shadowknight: /long rant

I went through a similiar story with WoW, but things were even worse for me with Asheron's Call when it was a new game (EQ timeframe).   The nice thing about WoW these days is that you can get a decent amount accomplished (or at least see all the content) without needing to be in a guild, which means no scheduled playtime.

LordJiro: GameSprocket: karmachameleon: I'm not trolling or being sarcastic.  If you like "Tomb Raider" of "Final Fantasy", that's fine, but those are the <i>best</i> video game movies that Hollywood has had to offer.

"Final Fantasy"  was really only game-related in title. "Silent Hill" was not bad from a pure spooky movie aspect. I hadn't played the game at all, but the movie built up a fascinating environment. I had the air raid siren from there as my ring tone for a bit.

Assuming you mean "Spirits Within"...it's just as related to Final Fantasy as any other Final Fantasy game is related to the others (aside from X2 and XIII-2).  FF games haven't exactly had a lot in common with eachother lately, aside from the title and a character named Cid.

I guess. The last time I played Final Fantasy it looked like this:

xaks: Bontesla: I stopped playing Wow two years ago. Rarely do I get the itch any more. I just couldn't justify spending that money every month when there were so many other things I wanted to do with that money.

If $12 or $15 bucks a month is breaking your entertainment budget, you have bigger problems than liking WoW.

Be honest.

I played for 5 years.  Do the math on that if you want, and then state with a straight face that the subscription fee shouldn't be a big deal to anyone.  I don't like to do the math, because if I do, I suddenly have deep regret.

Darth_Lukecash: Mortal Kombat was entertainingly good. Not artistic, but fun.

Sure, but that's what I mean.  Any of these movies that any of us do like are more like guilty pleasures, not actually good movies.

There has been real talent attached to some of them too.  I think the flaw is inherent in the translation from game to movie.  Games have stories, but the narrative structure is nothing like a movie or a book.  It will take a hell of a clever writer to finally pull it off.

2013-01-31 08:46:52 AM
Will it be a complete movie or will we have to buy a series of straight to DVD releases after it's theatrical run?

I wanted to say, the entire movie should be about the Inn at Goldshire, but not many people will get the reference. Hell, I know people who have been playing WoW for years and just found out about it last week.

2013-01-31 08:53:09 AM
If it was just a "Warcraft" movie we could start with the Exodus of the Orcs, make Thrall one of the major players considering he is largely a likeable character, and considering that time in the storyline has all the major players (Arthas, Jaina, Sylvanas, etc.) before shiat gets weird and we start introducing Blue Russian Space Goats and CocaineMagic addicted elves.

But that would basically be making Warcraft 3 into a movie....you know what i'm ok with this.

Yes.
I will be going to this movie opening night and start yelling out Chuck Norris jokes at random right about 1/4 way through the movie. Then I will tell the people shushing me to stfu noob.
At the end, I'm going to complain about how there are no extra bonus scenes during or immediately after the end credits after I paid really good money on my advance-purchase movie ticket.
Then, when they add 100 hours of extras and commentary to the dvd set, I will complain about how quickly I went through it and how boring it was to watch.

If they don't start the movie with fake trailers for movies (just taking existing movie names and dropping in Murlock or MURGRGLGLGLGLLGLGL) I will be very disappointed. For this to go off well, the director should have a solid story to follow, but a lot of the movie has to have a tongue-in-cheek element or you will lose everything awesome about Warcraft.

I mean at the very end of the film, when Gyllenhaal stops the bomber in the parallel universe and goes on to live happily ever after with Michelle Monaghan. She doesn't know he's Jake Gyllenaal, she thinks he's still Sean Fentriss, the guy who's body he Quantum Leaped into. That guy's been blinked out of existence now, and no one even knows it. Gyllenhaal is wearing Sean Fentriss's face, banging Sean Fentriss's dream girl, living in Sean Fentriss's house and celebrating the holidays from here on out with Sean Fentriss's family. And Monaghan, she has no idea that this guy isn't the same guy she's been flirting with on the train every morning. The movie is a huge WTF tragedy from Sean Fentriss's perspective.

Joelogon: What was wrong with Source Code? Plus, bonus points for being David Bowie's son.

The whole concept of Source Code was just too much of a leap of faith for me to take.  Seriously, the premise is that some nearly dead brains can sync up with people that die in the past?  And they try to explain this with quantum mumbo-jumbo?  Seriously?  To be honest, it thought it was more plausible that the whole thing to be in Jake's mind.  He's having a really weird near death dream/delusion.  For instance, have you ever have a recurring dream that was a little different each time?

I played WoW for 5 years, and for 4 of those years I really loved it. The last year it started feeling like a job. My ex and I ran a 300+ person guild on Undermine (Cake or Death) for 2 1/2 or 3 years and the farking guild DRAMA is enough to make you want to drown yourself in the toilet. I made it to about 4 months into Cataclysm and realized I never wanted to log in again (the goblin starting area quests were awesome though and Vash'jr was amazingly beautiful). Everything just started to feel like such a grind, and the thought of raising another 75 points of engineering/mining on one character and enchanting/tailoring AGAIN on another was just depressing. Too much farming and grinding and guildmates crying about raid rotations.

Oh, I understand that, but without Gyllenhaal ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL, then that guy and michelle would have perished due to the bomb that would wipe out parts of Chicago.  Needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few, especially when few wouldn't even be needing things in 10 minutes.  You can see it also as a fallen war hero earning a second chance at life by succeeding where fentriss would obviously fail.

I guess my glass is half full.

That's funny because I hate Jacob's ladder.  But really, fringe science movies need a lot of suspension of disbelief, otherwise you literally can't enjoy anything.  Time travel movies, Inception like dream movies, Space travel movies, there's tons of holes that are covered by mysterious tech.  Just got to roll with it.

For what it's worth, the new content is awesome.  Questing from 85 to 90 is great, good stories, good quest flow.  The monk class is really fun(to me, anyways).  And you really don't have to be in a guild to see the raid content anymore.  There's room for improvement(there's ALWAYS room for improvement), but I still like it more now than I think I ever have.

To be fair, WoW has been moving closer to that lately. Major quest objectives are "shared tag" now, so you don't have to wait for some named mob to respawn just because someone else was fighting it when you got there. I believe the next patch is making the world bosses "Tap to Faction" now too, so as long as your side started the fight, you can jump in and get credit for downing it.
