What was wrong with Source Code? Plus, bonus points for being David Bowie's son.

2013-01-30 10:36:56 PM
I play WoW. Have since vanilla, played Warcraft 2 & 3 (came too late to the show for 1), but I just can't see myself going to a Warcraft movie. I can't possibly see how they would make it interesting enough. Unless maybe they give me mounts and battle pets and achieves for proving it, but they'll save all that for the people who buy the DVD and they'll put codes in the boxes for redemption.

Half the movie is going to be about mining, enchanting, skinning, etc.

A movie with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes is an obvious artistic failure.

I play a lot of WoW but why would I watch some movie based on a video game which is based on LOTR when I could just watch LOTR?

I hope the entire movie is about pandas making beer.  MMORPG excitement doesn't get any better than pandas making beer.

Subby is kind of a moron.  The mod who greened this epic fail of a troll attempt isn't far behind.

does ANYONE remember the cut scenes from the end of Diablo 3?
those were epic on so many levels

so will the warcraft movie be dumb and geared for wow fanbois or epic geared toward humans
with wow just being the universe where the movie takes place

my guess is fanboi trash
too many BAD in jokes, voices, names, YAWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

Um, Source Code was farking great.  And it sidestepped the entire "This is just like Quantum Leap!" thing by having Scott Bakula in it.  And saying "Oh Boy."

Be interesting to see what movies Subby likes.

That it's taken this long for Blizzard to agree to a director is good news for those of us who would like to see quality when it's finally released. Then again, Blizzard is the same company who signs off on the horrible, downright awful stories and voice acting within their own games.

This may have been exciting news when Wrath was out but I can't see many being hyped for this anymore. Especially since it is live action. It may look very stupid.

There's no other details so far.. so it could be the story of Warcraft III rather than WoW.  I've noticed that most of the published novels concentrate on characters from that, like Tyrande, Malfurion, Jaina, Thrall, and so forth, many of which haven't been doing a lot in WoW.

WoW's storytelling is getting more detailed lately, with Scenarios telling a few.  I'll just say that Garrosh is looking to the Mogu as role models, bad as they are.. and he tries to have Vol'jin killed.

They made a couple of decent (in not aweful) Final Fantasy movies. I think they can pull it off.

Source Code was great, even though I feel bad for the guy Jake Gyllenhaal wipes out of existence at the end.

2013-01-31 04:23:59 AM
I wonder who they'll cast as Jaina Proudmore.. perhaps Gwyneth Paltrow could have done it, 10 years ago.. but it would probably be best with little known actors.

2013-01-31 04:28:25 AM
Given how much time Duncan Jones devotes to tweeting about video games, this is probably a good choice of director. Also, Moon was the best sci-fi movie in years.

2013-01-31 04:34:24 AM
Source code is amazing as long as you turn it off about 10 minutes before the end so you get a nice bittersweet ending instead of a ludicrous ultra-mega-happy ending.

2013-01-31 04:41:57 AM
As has been mentioned multiple times, there was nothing horribly wrong with Source Code, while Moon was positively astonishing given it's budget.

I'd see this just to see what he does with the source material, and I never even played WOW once.

You know how Eddie Murphy had those awful movies where he starred as everyone, except wearing wigs and shiat?

It will be like that, except with Chris Metzen.

Moon was tits. That is all.

Looks like IMDB gave Moon an 8.0 rating, Source Code got a 7.5.

2013-01-31 05:31:33 AM
What a troll of a headline. Source Code may not have been as good as Moon, but it hardly sucked. And for what Hollywood tends to churn out for sci-fi, it was fantastic.

I've got nothing but respect for Jones, but I can't see this film as being anything other than a payday and a flop. Hopefully he surprises me, but I'm not counting on it.

Old enough to know better: Who're you guys kidding? This is gonna suck like every other videogame movie.

Yup.  There hasn't been one single movie based on a video game that has been any good.

NOT ONE.

And it's not like Hollywood hasn't been trying.  They've made dozens of movies based on video games, and every single last one, without exception, has ranged from terrible to just below average.

I'm not trolling or being sarcastic.  If you like "Tomb Raider" of "Final Fantasy", that's fine, but those are the <i>best</i> video game movies that Hollywood has had to offer.  That pretty much says it all.

Which doesn't mean Jones can't make the first good one.  Someone has to be first.  But given the general track record so far, I won't hold my breath.

I stopped playing Wow two years ago. Rarely do I get the itch any more. I just couldn't justify spending that money every month when there were so many other things I wanted to do with that money.

If $12 or $15 bucks a month is breaking your entertainment budget, you have bigger problems than liking WoW.

Be honest.

I played for about nine months back in...  2006?  Somewhere in there.  I always loved the Warcraft games based on story and methos alone.  I mean, going online revealed that Blizzard created 10k years of backstory to go with everything in this universe.

And by chance I kind of shot up in the ranks of a progression guild.  It was right before Nax first started coming out.  I made a name for myself on a server as a healer, a druid that actually enjoyed healing and was damn good at it.  So I got recruited, geared up rather quick, and next thing I know I was on one of the premier guild schedules and pushing every new zone as soon as it came out.

But it got to be too much.  I mean, I had a schedule to keep if I wanted to progress, and as a healer I wasn't easily replaced.  So I kept signing on, night after night, until the wife was rightfully getting pissed at me.  I realized that my addictive personality was probably not a good combo with this kind of game, and realized that I really wasn't enjoying it anymore.  I was farming during the day for all the stuff I would need for the raid that night.  When I signed on after the kid went to bed, I saw my wife dropping dirty looks.

When I sat down one night, I let out a resigned sigh and realized this is how I felt when I was getting ready to go to work at the last job I hated.  I was paying to do a job that I didn't even like.  So, I told the guys that I was going to do one last night (they were good folk, didn't want to leave them down a healer just because I had a crisis) and told them to find a replacement.  After the raid, I sold all items I could, gave all the gold and items I could away from all my characters, deleted them, and canceled my account.  I burned every bridge I could on that one.

Haven't played since right before Burning Crusade came out, nor have a played any other MMO on the market.  It's not money, I just don't think I can trust myself around them.

/long rant

"Final Fantasy"  was really only game-related in title. "Silent Hill" was not bad from a pure spooky movie aspect. I hadn't played the game at all, but the movie built up a fascinating environment. I had the air raid siren from there as my ring tone for a bit.

I remember being one warlock in the old 40 man raids, where 5 of each class was expected.  But I've not done that in a long, long time, and I'm still in the game.  Not raiding, partly because people like to raid in the evenings, and I sleep then, with my 3rd shift job.  There's a Raid Finder system to get in, without a guild, though I've not tried it yet.  I have pretty much every class and spec, save for the new Monk class, so I'm just easing into Heroic dungeons in the last expansion, and hoping they're not as nasty as the Cataclysm ones were.

Assuming you mean "Spirits Within"...it's just as related to Final Fantasy as any other Final Fantasy game is related to the others (aside from X2 and XIII-2).  FF games haven't exactly had a lot in common with eachother lately, aside from the title and a character named Cid.

Exactly why I stopped playing any kind of MMO. The first time some guild member tried chewing us out by saying, "You all need to be taking this more seriously!!!" I was done.
