(USA Today)   A lot of people are offended by the Volkswagen ad with the white guy faking a Jamaican accent. Except Jamaica's minister of culture and tourism, who loves it and wants to discuss a co-branding contract   (usatoday.com) divider line 184

I like his lighten up and have fun attitude. It seems very Jamaican.

Wait, is that wrong?

Everyone know that Jamaicans are African-American, like any other person of color.

It's no worse than that guy faking a German accent and pretending he was the CEO of VW.

There are a lot of Asians that have grown up in the US and have an American accent.

I have yet to see a European that grew up in China, and then learned English.

I fail to see how this ad could be considered "racist."

"People are entitled to their own opinion," says Erik Nicolaisen, the 33-year-old actor. But for a second opinion, he asked his brother-in-law, who is from Kingston, Jamaica. "He loves it."

"It's pretty horrific," says Ricki Fairley-Brown, president of the multicultural marketing agency Dove Marketing. "Why do they have a white guy from Minnesota faking a Jamaican accent?"

Same reason men dress as women, babies and animals talk and dance, and grannies rap.  A big part of humor of humor is having people do things that are unexpected or against type.

And, "pretty horrific??"  Man, you are a giant wuss.

Just like the time there was a campaign to take the Speedy Gonzales cartoons off the air, because Hispanics would find them offensive. Offensive that the little Mexican guy always wins? They loved him!

Racist? No. Stupid? Yes. It's an advertisement. What do you expect?

Two words: cultural appropriation.

Certain clothing, traditions, and yes, even accents are reserved for certain races. If you disagree, you are oppressing those poor minorities.

Oh, wait, I'm a stuck up white person. Sorry about that.

Call me when they do a white guy speaking ebonics.

2013-01-30 09:24:31 PM
Ah, extreme political correctness. I don't see the problem with a white person speaking with a Jamaican accent. There are white Jamaicans, albeit they are quite the minority.

I don't understand how "African-American" became accepted. It seems like it should be horribly offensive since it presumes everyone in Africa is black and every black person is of African decent.

Also Minnesota residents often have a thick upper midwest accent.  As a Michigan resident I saw the whole Minnesota reference as "You're supposed to have this weird accent, yet the Jetta has made you have this one instead."  It's not the world's greatest commercial, but I fail to see how it is offensive.

Political correctness has never made sense. If the pattern holds, African-American will soon become offensive and a new term will be pushed as the politically correct term to use. This is what happened to "colored" and "black".

FTA : Even more troubled by the spot is Rochelle Newman-Carrasco, chief hispanic marketing strategist at Walton Isaacson, an African-American, Gay/Lesbian and Hispanic agency. "What happens in this ad is that the culture becomes a punch line, and that is offensive."

She's right. Havent Minnesotans suffered enough? A hundred and fiifty five years of oppression shouts, "YES!".

"African-American" is kind of a dumb term.  Black's never been offensive.
