Dr Dreidel: Only when they make the news. The thing about ultra-Orthodoxy is that they generally don't want the attention. When you get fanatical enough, though any attention is good attention - and these assholes THRIVE on negative press, since their whole raison d'etre is "to fight against the immoral depravity thrust upon society by perverse monsters" in the first place. The negative attention feeds their cause.

Not to mention that they treat any criticism as anti-semitism. Basically, if you speak out against anything they do, they liken you to Nazis.

They'll try to play the whole Holocaust Guilt Trip card for the next few millennia.

I am not a rabid Fark Atheist who believes all religions should be banned or considered mental illness, in fact I'm theistic myself, but I find that all the Abrahamic faiths have an underlying problem.

They are built on the teachings of Semitic tribes (Hebrew or Arab) from antiquity (Old Testament) through the 7th century (Koran). Thus, they have the social values and morality of ancient desert tribes hard-coded into them, on the idea that was a good idea 2000 year ago is a good idea forever. Some things, like don't murder and don't steal, yeah, that's timeless wisdom. Don't eat pork or shellfish? That made sense before refrigeration and modern food safety, now it's just silly (unless you have a pork or shellfish allergy). Don't mix fibers of different cloths in the same garment? Don't serve dairy and meat in the same dish? Sometimes I think they were just trying to see what they could get away with.

If you actually read those scriptures, the God of Abraham is an asshole. The main reason I'm not Judeo-Christian is that I actually read the Bible. Jehovah is a jerkass god.

Why? Book of Exodus: The various plagues upon Egypt? So, Yahweh thinks its fair to kill thousands upon thousands of children to try to convince a monarch about his labor policies (in addition to the other calamities he poured upon people who had no say in the treatment of the Israelites)? You'd think that an omnipotent and loving deity would have a wiser way of handling that (an angry archangel with a flaming sword appearing in his bedchamber one night to demand their freedom might be a start, assuming he had to respect free will and couldn't automagically make the Pharaoh just love them or want to be rid of them). What about the Book of Job, where in gods mad rush to torment Job to prove to satan that Job is virtuous, what about the other people (like Jobs family and his servants) that were killed?

He apparently doesn't mind his own people being sold into slavery, heck there are even rules for it, and it's explicitly commanded for slaves to obey their owners.

Basically, by their own scriptures god/Jehovah/Yahweh is a jerk who will kill you in a heartbeat if he's trying to make a point to someone else he cares about more than you. Yeah, all-loving god my ass.

Most followers of Abrahamic religions don't seem to realize that the god they have in their mind is not the one described in their scriptures. Christians talk about a god of peace and love who created everyone and everything. . .who spends the first half of the Bible not giving a flying fark about anybody except the Jews (and even then, he was pretty hard on them at times).

However, in the minds of these ultra-conservative religious types, they think they can do no wrong, they think they are justified by laws and scripture, so it's all justified.

It's a dangerous mix: self-righteous fervor, total lack of regard for ones fellow man, and militant zeal to obey an antiquated code of behavior that is radically out of synch with modern society.

These guys are to Judaism what the WBC is to Christianity and the Taliban are to Islam.

This is what it really comes down to, Jews in the community are afraid to say anything. For extremely religious people, being Orthodox is like a pissing contest. Nobody wants to be seen as less religious as the next guy, even when the next guy is batshiat insane.

And they just straight up don't care what anyone from outside the community has to say, if you're not Orthodox Jewish, you're barely above the dirt.

//They REALLY don't like non-practicing Jews, either.

I get along with non-practicing Jews very well, even dated three non-religious Jewish women over the years. The Hasidics and Charedi seem to be the fundamentalists among the lot, proof that even Jews have their fanatics.

The Hasidics seem pretty funny in a couple of ways to me:

1) they have about a zillion rules for everything. They probably have a dozen rules for wiping one's butt after going poop. There's Rabbis that spend their entire lives debating exactly how many steps a person can take on the Sabbath. As if Jehovah really cares about this--they're just as silly as the Amish who argue whether or not zippers on clothing violate their silly book of rules.

2) all those clever devices and tricks they use to try and get around the Sabbath prohibition against work. There's a whole industry that makes special appliances that lets Hasidic Jews comply with the Sabbath laws in fact if not in spirit. There's even elevators in Israel that have a special Sabbath mode that lets people go up, but not down (going down means you're providing work to lift the counterweight). What gets me is the assumption that Jehovah isn't smart enough to see through all this legalistic nonsense.

The Brooklyn district attorney, Charles J. Hynes, who prosecuted the Weberman case, has now received allegations that members of a modesty committee forced their way into a home in the borough, confiscating an iPad and computer equipment deemed inappropriate for Orthodox children, officials say. Allegations have also surfaced that a modesty committee threatened to publicly shame a married man who was having an affair unless he paid the members money for what they described as therapy.

What these idiots fail to realize is that without temptation, righteousness cannot exist.

It is not the absence of sin which defines the righteous man. It is the personal rejection of sin which defines the righteous. With the ability to sin removed, the venial are not raised to a state of grace, and the virtuous are denied the opportunity.

The devout should never advocate the banishment of vice, rather they must individually face and overcome the temptation.

A man who doesn't steal a diamond that is locked in a vault shows no greater virtue than a man who neglects to return an overpayment.

I work in real estate and was doing some neighborhood research for a developer a few years ago in a different Brooklyn neighborhood with a large Orthodox Jewish community.

When I asked people about problems the neighborhood was facing they all said the EXACT same thing....

You see, it seems that our "wholesome" Orthodox Jewish community had quite a problem with their men seeing prostitutes. The non-Orthodox locals were livid about it. One lady pointed out to me on one block all of the known prostitute homes -  it was like a 1/3 of the street. I was floored.

The hats are a status symbol, they are worn to mark how wealthy a person is. Those people are wealthy.

As I understand, they're worn because "The Rebbe" wore one (the leader of each sect is that sect's "Rebbe". They usually replace him with his top deputy when he dies, unless you're a crazy Messianic cult). That's how the various styles came to be - most times, you see a wide-brimmed fur hat (the kind in that photo), but there are sects that wear a taller, more cylindrical-shaped hat. There are also ultra-Orthodox people who don't wear hats at all - non-Hasidic types, mostly.

They are expensive as hell, though - one wonders how a family barely getting by with 1 job, 8 kids, welfare and community support can afford $1000 for a hat. In that sense, I suppose there is a "status" element there - if you're the only Shlomo on the block not wearing a streimel, the chapsen will come beat you with tsimmes-soaked shmattas.

I don't think you realize the huge variety of hats that are worn in Brooklyn. I'm guessing they're like wrist watches to financial guys, or handbags to suburban women. The people who wear them can probably recognize all sorts of things about each other from those hats, and not just relative status...

The interesting thing about these sort of religious/cultural rules is how poorly it paints men - which is surprising given how it is usually men that had control of setting up the rules, and made them basically read "men are animals that can't control themselves so women should hide themselves away to avoid provoking us".

I even proposed a practical solution for eliminating the spark. "If that's what's bothering you, you can put a condenser across the switch, so the electricity will go on and off without any spark whatsoever -- anywhere." But for some reason, they didn't like that idea either.

"It's somebody who is a busybody, and there are quite a few of them - zealots who take it upon themselves and they just enforce. They're considered crazy, but people don't want to confront them."

Didn't they have a similar problem with busybodies reporting people and thugs enforcing the rules in Warsaw about 70 years ago? How did that work out?

I'm not Jewish, but because of my job, I've known several Orthodox Jews personally, and they've been uniformly wonderful, warm, caring people, who I would gladly defer to on matters of their own religion, even those tenets I don't agree with. It's not MY religion.

That said, there are child molesters and drug dealers in every community. Being born into a particular community doesn't make a person immune to stupidity.

Look hard, and ask yourself, "Are these Americans?"

Religion is a mental disorder.  Normal religious belief is sort of like a neurosis -- you should be viewed as someone with a treatable illness, but not discriminated against.  Fundamentalist religion is a psychosis.  When psychotic people threaten or harm others, we put them in institutions.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ― C.S. Vectron: Orthodox leader Nechemya Weberman, 53, is currently on trial for allegedly abusing a young girl he counseled. Yesterday, four men were arrested and accused of using intimidation and bribery to get the girl to drop the charges.
Abraham Rubin is accused of offering a $500,000 bribe to the alleged victim, in hopes of getting her to drop the charges against an Orthodox community member who she says molested her for three years.........139 have been prosecuted for sex abuse since 2009

These people are sooo moral.

Molesters gravitate to naive and vulnerable people, which religion and charity organizations have in droves.

Yeah, these claptraps tried to hide the fact that one of their "counselors" molested a minor and got sentenced to 103 years in prison.

And they're still trying to blame it on her because she was "rebellious".

First Rule of the Abrahamic Religions: The victim is always the real villain. Especially of it's a girl.

And they wonder why I'm a spiritual agnostic: "Cause I don't think the big Brah upstairs would make us so meek that we can't talk back at our so-called "leaders" when we know they're full of shiat.

Friend of mine joined the 14th Street Y in NYC because it had a gym and is close to where he lives. He is not Jewish, but it happens to be part of the Educational Alliance, a Jewish non-profit.

When he was checking out the pool schedule, he noticed that there were a few blocks of time where only women could swim. He asked about it, thinking it was a bit strange. They said that it's because they have to adhere to some Jewish standard or something that men and women can't be in the pool together. But they told him in a "Well that's just our policy" kind of way.

Could you imagine the fallout if it was a Muslim place? The NY Post and Fox News would be picketing and harassing the management post haste.

The hats are a status symbol, they are worn to mark how wealthy a person is. Those people are wealthy.
