The Brooklyn district attorney, Charles J. Hynes, who prosecuted the Weberman case, has now received allegations that members of a modesty committee forced their way into a home in the borough, confiscating an iPad and computer equipment deemed inappropriate for Orthodox children, officials say. Allegations have also surfaced that a modesty committee threatened to publicly shame a married man who was having an affair unless he paid the members money for what they described as therapy.

Only when they make the news. The thing about ultra-Orthodoxy is that they generally don't want the attention. When you get fanatical enough, though any attention is good attention - and these assholes THRIVE on negative press, since their whole raison d'etre is "to fight against the immoral depravity thrust upon society by perverse monsters" in the first place. The negative attention feeds their cause.

// never got harassed by such squads in Jerusalem or otherwise

I don't think you realize the huge variety of hats that are worn in Brooklyn. I'm guessing they're like wrist watches to financial guys, or handbags to suburban women. The people who wear them can probably recognize all sorts of things about each other from those hats, and not just relative status...

As I understand, they're worn because "The Rebbe" wore one (the leader of each sect is that sect's "Rebbe". They usually replace him with his top deputy when he dies, unless you're a crazy Messianic cult). That's how the various styles came to be - most times, you see a wide-brimmed fur hat (the kind in that photo), but there are sects that wear a taller, more cylindrical-shaped hat. There are also ultra-Orthodox people who don't wear hats at all - non-Hasidic types, mostly.

They are expensive as hell, though - one wonders how a family barely getting by with 1 job, 8 kids, welfare and community support can afford $1000 for a hat. In that sense, I suppose there is a "status" element there - if you're the only Shlomo on the block not wearing a streimel, the chapsen will come beat you with tsimmes-soaked shmattas.

I get along with non-practicing Jews very well, even dated three non-religious Jewish women over the years. The Hasidics and Charedi seem to be the fundamentalists among the lot, proof that even Jews have their fanatics.

The Hasidics seem pretty funny in a couple of ways to me:

1) they have about a zillion rules for everything. They probably have a dozen rules for wiping one's butt after going poop. There's Rabbis that spend their entire lives debating exactly how many steps a person can take on the Sabbath. As if Jehovah really cares about this--they're just as silly as the Amish who argue whether or not zippers on clothing violate their silly book of rules.

2) all those clever devices and tricks they use to try and get around the Sabbath prohibition against work. There's a whole industry that makes special appliances that lets Hasidic Jews comply with the Sabbath laws in fact if not in spirit. There's even elevators in Israel that have a special Sabbath mode that lets people go up, but not down (going down means you're providing work to lift the counterweight). What gets me is the assumption that Jehovah isn't smart enough to see through all this legalistic nonsense.

Vectron: Orthodox leader Nechemya Weberman, 53, is currently on trial for allegedly abusing a young girl he counseled. Yesterday, four men were arrested and accused of using intimidation and bribery to get the girl to drop the charges.
Abraham Rubin is accused of offering a $500,000 bribe to the alleged victim, in hopes of getting her to drop the charges against an Orthodox community member who she says molested her for three years.........139 have been prosecuted for sex abuse since 2009

These people are sooo moral.

I work in real estate and was doing some neighborhood research for a developer a few years ago in a different Brooklyn neighborhood with a large Orthodox Jewish community.

When I asked people about problems the neighborhood was facing they all said the EXACT same thing....

You see, it seems that our "wholesome" Orthodox Jewish community had quite a problem with their men seeing prostitutes. The non-Orthodox locals were livid about it. One lady pointed out to me on one block all of the known prostitute homes - it was like a 1/3 of the street. I was floored.

...are part of the rules. If I write a rule that says you can't go faster than 55 mph on government-owned roads, you're not "getting around" the rule by going 70 in a parking lot. You're also not "getting around" the rule if a private concern buys I-95 from the government. You're also not "getting around" the rule if someone else is driving the car - even your car.

It may seem like it's a violation of the SPIRIT of the rule...which is an argument that was discussed in the Talmud. There are modern opinions that don't like many of the devices, and won't permit their use - which is why these products will often contain some kind of disclaimer telling you to check with the authority you trust before using them.

Years ago, I was walking through Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox neighborhood, Mea Shearim, with a bunch of other kids. We had been warned to dress modestly, especially the girls. Suddenly a Hasid ran up to me and, without speaking, handed me a folded piece of paper. The paper started off "DEAR PRECIOUS SISTER OF THE TORAH", and continued on to list a bunch of dress codes. Apparently the sleeves of my friend's dress didn't come all the way below her elbows.

There's your problem. When you let the crazy affect your lifestyle, they begin to think that it's their job, even their right to dictate/harass/etc.

There's a reason that this kind of stuff usually takes place within small communities. It's because society at large won't tolerate that stuff for long.

It's a sad state of affairs when in our quest to promote tolerance, we allow intolerance to flourish.

There's a reason that this kind of stuff usually takes place within small communities. It's because society at large won't tolerate that stuff for long.

It's a sad state of affairs when in our quest to promote tolerance, we allow intolerance to flourish.

Dr Dreidel: Only when they make the news.

Not to mention that they treat any criticism as anti-semitism. Basically, if you speak out against anything they do, they liken you to Nazis.

They'll try to play the whole Holocaust Guilt Trip card for the next few millennia.

I am not a rabid Fark Atheist who believes all religions should be banned or considered mental illness, in fact I'm theistic myself, but I find that all the Abrahamic faiths have an underlying problem.

They are built on the teachings of Semitic tribes (Hebrew or Arab) from antiquity (Old Testament) through the 7th century (Koran). Thus, they have the social values and morality of ancient desert tribes hard-coded into them, on the idea that was a good idea 2000 year ago is a good idea forever. Some things, like don't murder and don't steal, yeah, that's timeless wisdom. Don't eat pork or shellfish? That made sense before refrigeration and modern food safety, now it's just silly (unless you have a pork or shellfish allergy). Don't mix fibers of different cloths in the same garment? Don't serve dairy and meat in the same dish? Sometimes I think they were just trying to see what they could get away with.

If you actually read those scriptures, the God of Abraham is an asshole. The main reason I'm not Judeo-Christian is that I actually read the Bible. Jehovah is a jerkass god.

Why? Book of Exodus: The various plagues upon Egypt? So, Yahweh thinks its fair to kill thousands upon thousands of children to try to convince a monarch about his labor policies (in addition to the other calamities he poured upon people who had no say in the treatment of the Israelites)? You'd think that an omnipotent and loving deity would have a wiser way of handling that (an angry archangel with a flaming sword appearing in his bedchamber one night to demand their freedom might be a start, assuming he had to respect free will and couldn't automagically make the Pharaoh just love them or want to be rid of them). What about the Book of Job, where in gods mad rush to torment Job to prove to satan that Job is virtuous, what about the other people (like Jobs family and his servants) that were killed?

He apparently doesn't mind his own people being sold into slavery, heck there are even rules for it, and it's explicitly commanded for slaves to obey their owners.

Basically, by their own scriptures god/Jehovah/Yahweh is a jerk who will kill you in a heartbeat if he's trying to make a point to someone else he cares about more than you. Yeah, all-loving god my ass.

Most followers of Abrahamic religions don't seem to realize that the god they have in their mind is not the one described in their scriptures. Christians talk about a god of peace and love who created everyone and everything. . .who spends the first half of the Bible not giving a flying fark about anybody except the Jews (and even then, he was pretty hard on them at times).

However, in the minds of these ultra-conservative religious types, they think they can do no wrong, they think they are justified by laws and scripture, so it's all justified.

It's a dangerous mix: self-righteous fervor, total lack of regard for ones fellow man, and militant zeal to obey an antiquated code of behavior that is radically out of synch with modern society.

These guys are to Judaism what the WBC is to Christianity and the Taliban are to Islam.

Friend of mine joined the 14th Street Y in NYC because it had a gym and is close to where he lives. He is not Jewish, but it happens to be part of the Educational Alliance, a Jewish non-profit.

When he was checking out the pool schedule, he noticed that there were a few blocks of time where only women could swim. He asked about it, thinking it was a bit strange. They said that it's because they have to adhere to some Jewish standard or something that men and women can't be in the pool together. But they told him in a "Well that's just our policy" kind of way.

Could you imagine the fallout if it was a Muslim place? The NY Post and Fox News would be picketing and harassing the management post haste.

Religion is a mental disorder. Normal religious belief is sort of like a neurosis -- you should be viewed as someone with a treatable illness, but not discriminated against. Fundamentalist religion is a psychosis. When psychotic people threaten or harm others, we put them in institutions.

Kid the Universe: Dr Dreidel: vernonFL: The Larch: Vectron: So you're telling other people how to dress?

I love the hats. Does anyone know if there's a coffee table book somewhere called "Very Silly Hats of Brooklyn" or something similar?

The hats are a status symbol, they are worn to mark how wealthy a person is. Those people are wealthy.

They are ALL on food stamps and welfare. Used to live in the neighborhood and all the women with their litters in tow carried EBT cards. A truly nasty and xenophobic people, for sure

Psycat: Kunks!: FTA: "They're considered crazy, but people don't want to confront them."

This is what it really comes down to, Jews in the community are afraid to say anything. For extremely religious people, being Orthodox is like a pissing contest. Nobody wants to be seen as less religious as the next guy, even when the next guy is batshiat insane.

And they just straight up don't care what anyone from outside the community has to say, if you're not Orthodox Jewish, you're barely above the dirt.

/I'm Jewish
//They REALLY don't like non-practicing Jews, either.

So that's why they are all lawyers...

There is a movie about the hasidic smugglers.

Jesse Eisenberg, one of the actors who graduated from the Michael Cera School of Acting

It was an interesting film, though still find the end cliche funny (I wonder how true this was) of Jesse's character laying Tefillin (thanks to a nearby Mitzvah Tank), bringing him spiritual guilt, which leads to his next action bringing down the entire drug organization. Makes me wish this technique worked on all the Ultra Orthodox child molesters, drug smugglers, tax evaders, ect; who would change their ways after practicing this religious duty, but consider how they do it everyday except for Shabbat, it unfortunately doesn't do the same thing to them as it does to a movie character!

ChubbyTiger: SovietCanuckistan: AgentBang: Friend of mine joined the 14th Street Y in NYC because it had a gym and is close to where he lives.

I went to a Jewish weeding last year and when I was introduced to the Rabbi, I shook his hand and extended my hand to his wife as well. I might as well pulled a gun from my coat.

To be fair, it's traditionally not considered polite to offer your hand to any female. You always wait for them to extend their hand first. This is not a Jewish thing (exclusively).

No, that's not why. A man should NEVER touch a woman he is not family with or married to.

AND he's also not allowed to touch his wife either when she has her period. She has to go through a cleansing ritual before she can be touched again.

I work with a lot of Hasids (NYC real estate). Most are pretty cool guys.... But I've learned not to offer my hand for them to shake.

There was this REALLY hot one who used to work shirtless in the construction of one of my buildings years ago. Yummy. We'd flirt but at age 25 he was already married with like 5 kids. But damn. I woulda.

What these idiots fail to realize is that without temptation, righteousness cannot exist.

It is not the absence of sin which defines the righteous man. It is the personal rejection of sin which defines the righteous. With the ability to sin removed, the venial are not raised to a state of grace, and the virtuous are denied the opportunity.

The devout should never advocate the banishment of vice, rather they must individually face and overcome the temptation.

A man who doesn't steal a diamond that is locked in a vault shows no greater virtue than a man who neglects to return an overpayment.

I'm not Jewish, but because of my job, I've known several Orthodox Jews personally, and they've been uniformly wonderful, warm, caring people, who I would gladly defer to on matters of their own religion, even those tenets I don't agree with. It's not MY religion.

That said, there are child molesters and drug dealers in every community. Being born into a particular community doesn't make a person immune to stupidity.

Best writing on this idiocy ever.

Finally I tried to assure the rabbinical students that the electric spark that was bothering them when they pushed the elevator buttons was not fire. I said, "Electricity is not fire. It's not a chemical process, as fire is." "
    Oh?" they said. "
Of course, there's electricity in amongst the atoms in a fire."
    "Aha!" they said.
"And in every other phenomenon that occurs in the world."
I even proposed a practical solution for eliminating the spark. "If that's what's bothering you, you can put a condenser across the switch, so the electricity will go on and off without any spark whatsoever -- anywhere." But for some reason, they didn't like that idea either.

The interesting thing about these sort of religious/cultural rules is how poorly it paints men - which is surprising given how it is usually men that had control of setting up the rules, and made them basically read "men are animals that can't control themselves so women should hide themselves away to avoid provoking us".

The interesting thing about these sort of religious/cultural rules is how poorly it paints men - which is surprising given how it is usually men that had control of setting up the rules, and made them basically read "men are animals that can't control themselves so women should hide themselves away to avoid provoking us".

And yet they fail to see the irony that their perceived moral superiority in upholding rules so fastidiously is exactly this right here -- that they're little more than drooling savages unable to control even their most base impulses.

It's to keep them in the faith.

If one can be a good human being without God, well, what use is religion then?

They don't see it that way. The idea of a cold, dispassionate, and godless universe is scary. I had this conversation with my dad. For people like him, the belief that he will be reunited with my mother after death is all that keeps him going.

It's sad to watch.

That's the problem with extreme paternalistic societies. Women end up getting viewed as objects that are OK to rape. So, they objectify them even more and make them look like a tree or shrubbery or something less rapable. Can't have MY daughter being raped, it ruins the property value.

Even in Israel people are starting to push the Hasidim back. Don't have to pay taxes, get free housing on kibbutz, legally obligated to avoid military service. It's getting on Israelis' nerves. Hasidic Judaism is just a central European perversion of Orthodoxy and due to their mass migration to Israel and block voting they have far more power than they "should".

Sell these assholes as much rope as they need to hang themselves with. There's no need to get in the way of these fellows, they'll do themselves all in given enough time.

Lollipop165: ChubbyTiger: SovietCanuckistan: AgentBang: Friend of mine joined the 14th Street Y in NYC because it had a gym and is close to where he lives.

But damn. I woulda.

When I lived in New York I rented an apartment in Bay Ridge and my landlord was a Hasid whose office was in Borough Park. I wish I could remember his name. You may have worked with him.

At any rate, I had to move back to FL in the middle of my lease. Not only did he let me out of the lease, he returned my security deposit. Decent guy in my opinion. I had a couple of Hasids at my brokerage office that were decent folks also. One of them used to try to get over on me sometimes but realized that I wasn't going to put up with crap. My very limited dealings with them were mostly positive. If I ever ran into the morality police though, I might have had a different opinion. The Hasids I knew must not have been these Ultra-Orthodox a-holes.

That's really humorous. They look like clowns. And that gear must be AWESOME in 90+ degree high-humidity summers!

They must smell like feet wrapped in leathery burnt bacon.

As I understand that's a leftover from their Eastern European days. That wouldn't have served them well in the Negev Desert.

A few years ago, I was at the public library in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. Upper Saddle River boarders Rockland County, New York. The nearby town of Monsey, NY is majority Hasidim. I needed to look up a book and was sitting at one of the library terminals that has net access. A middle-aged Hasidic man sat at the terminal next to me. He fidgeted around a bit, pointed at the computer monitor, and said to me, "You know how to use that?" "You mean the internet?", I replied. "Yes", he said. Then he held up an envelope with a URL written on it and and asked me, "How do I find this?". I showed him how to type the URL into the address bar. When he hit send, it brought back a site on tantric sex positions. I said to him, "Is this what you're looking for?" He didn't answer. I told him the library had a policy prohibiting viewing sex sites on their computers. He said, "Oh, they are right about that." When I got up to leave, he was still sitting there looking at the tantric sex positions.

Religious extremism, no matter what the religion, is the problem. The cure is to move beyond religion, but we won't do that for some time yet. The mitigation is to crack down on religious extremists, no matter what the religion, when they decide that their laws, not the laws of our society as a whole, should apply.

Even yours is kind of anti-Semitic.

casual disregard: Incog_Neeto: The jews and the palastinians have so much in common I don't know why they can't get along.

When my ancestors dreamed up Valhalla, they imagined themselves rewarded for fighting each other. Not some perennial foe or a daffy foreign invader - no, they imagined themselves fighting blood against blood. Not because they needed to do it, but just because they could.

I don't know where I was going with that. I guess the idea of Valhalla sounds pretty stupid by modern standards.

That's for sure. Next to the Resurrection of Christ, Valhalla just seems nuts.

It's amazing to contemplate that our ancestors in antiquity used to have such laughably insane religious beliefs.

I think its a rule of law that Hasidic Jews be a-holes to everyone as that is the experience of most people who meet Hasidic Jews - they are overly dressed a-holes.

miss jinxed: I'm an orthodox jew and you'd never know it from meeting me based on what I'm wearing (especially now that it is winter here), though I do mostly follow sniut (modesty rules). You probably wouldn't know it if you spent several hours with me.

The orthodox jews I know frown upon these types of shenanigans. Rabbis I know openly speak out against them. This is a very small group and they are only given attention when their actions are particularly ridiculous. When something like this story comes out it embarrasses the entire rest of the community. 99% of the Jewish community does not want to be remotely tied to these people (I certainly don't). It is a super annoying and sad situation, but there isn't a good way to change it.

------

Of course there is. Those of you who are tired of being embarrassed by these sacks of crap can gather in large groups and accost them in public, screaming "STFU you self-righteous ASSHOLES!". Then you can grab their silly hats and frisbee them up into the nearest tree.

At least Valhalla had the grace to go the way of the dodo. I think there are few things worse than a death cult which forgot to die.

SovietCanuckistan: Communist_Manifesto: gja: Doink_Boink: As an atheist maybe I should go around town telling women to wear less clothes, slut it up a bit.

Is it OK if I am Christian, but still want to support your initiative?

Totally okay, maybe this is the way we can all come together as one. Our slogan could be something like, "God or No, please dress like a hoe!" or something like that

Cleavage for Christ

Who Would Jesus Do?

ozzie_stu: "They're considered crazy, but people don't want to confront them."

oblig ... you know who else they thought was crazy but didn't want to confront ?

Islamist extremists? Christian extremists? Or any other religious extremist group that one opposing religious group wants to uphold (e.g. Christians complaining about the silent moderate Muslims when a terrorist attack occurs, but those Christians usually remain silent and/or secretly cheer when their extremists preform unspeakable acts; which appears to not be isolated to any one religion), while ignoring the extremist acts related to their own faith.

/but yeah, nice Godwin :)

Of course you don't want to be associated with those who remind you by their acts and words of all the mitzvah you break on a daily basis.

HAHAHAH, yeah, that's it.

Keep telling yourself that. You folks are always on about how no one in qualified and righteous enough to tell you how your business, especially those dirty goyim, well those folks who are protecting their tradition are just doing what you should be and all of you lawbreaking, covenant breaking Apikoyres know it.

maxheck: Despite the gloss given by most US history books, the Pilgrims didn't leave England and the Netherlands because they wanted religious freedom.

They left Europe because they couldn't turn Europe into the theocracy they wanted.

Dudes... You're living in *Brooklyn.* Give it up.

I'm not saying you're wrong, necessarily... but unless there were orthodox jews among the Pilgrims I didn't know about, your anger seems somewhat misdirected.

atomicmask: This is the fruits of multiculturalism. This is what happens when you let everyone think that the little culture that couldn't form a coherent civilization is worthy of existing in a culture that could.

Maybe you should think back to when American society was at its most monoculturally white and Christian. Do you imagine that period was more open and free, or less?

Here's some reality; Pluralism is what allows for human progress, not homogeny. You're complaining about multiculturalism, but in fact you're doing exactly what the fundamentalists are doing; claiming your way of life is right and everything and everyone else is wrong. Acceptance and assimilation of new cultural influences is the only reason we're not still dressing in full length wool of fitting teenagers with chastity belts.

I could care less how these Hasidim idiots want to live provided that: A) They stopped sponging off welfare. B) They weren't trying to tell other people what to do.

In their defense, they don't give a damn what you do. Only members of their own communities.

Any society that can't manage to raise it's men to understand that rape is a bad thing and makes it the women's problem can go fu*k itself.

This.

As much as I want to respect someone's beliefs, I really want to stroll down the street in hot shorts and pasties.

Can I watch?
(owww, fiance just slapped the back of my head....SEE WHAT YOU MADE ME DO?)

They'd stone the women. That's what these freaks do in Israel.

Yeah but this is NY. Try that shiat on a bunch of NY women.
I will pray for their speedy recoveries as they lay in the hospital missing their gonads.

/NY women, do NOT fark with them
