"I think video games is a bigger problem than guns, because video games affect people," he told host Chuck Todd.

ARE. ARE a bigger problem than guns, Lamar....

Once again, this is an actual U.S. senator. An actual senator from the United States. That was elected to an office.

WHO. WHO was elected to an office, Kotaku-writer....

/new benchmark for insanity has now been set
//where's Bob the Angry Flower when you need him?

Canadians have video games... how's the mass murder up there going?

Same issue back in the 80's with metal.  UK kids were exposed to the same music as American teens, yet they weren't offing themselves at the same rate.

2013-01-30 04:34:16 PM
No he didn't say that
*watches video*
Well I'll be damned.

2013-01-30 04:37:34 PM
Its about time we addressed this country's greatest threat. Gamers.

/facepalm

2013-01-30 04:38:16 PM
I can see his point.  I mean, don't you remember the mass murders that were committed with Katamari Damacy balls a few years back?

2013-01-30 04:45:15 PM
Oh boy. I just LOVE it when Lamar Alexander makes his home state look so educated.

This is a state that took the survival rate for childhood blood cancers from 0% to 97% iin 20 years. We gave Steve Jobs a new gut. And we elected this man.

Goddamnitsomuch.

2013-01-30 04:45:23 PM
This just in: Sen. Lamar Alexander is a f*cking imbecile

/along with anyone who voted for the walking coprolite

Some people think video games cause players to commit real world violence. I say we kill those people!

2013-01-30 04:46:24 PM
I wondered why video game violence was such a huge deal in the early 2000's/late 90's but basically forgotten about till now.

I guess I have my answer: it's only bad when we need to distract ourselves from other more inconvenient truths.

2013-01-30 04:46:43 PM
No, you God damned moron! It's comic books!

It's remarkable how much of a bald-faced lie this is. Most political lies can at least crap up SOME piece of evidence.

2013-01-30 04:49:00 PM
Well, let's just hope we don't piss the gaming community off with sweeping, nationwide bans on Mountain Dew and Cheetos. God help us when they rise up, take their Xbox controllers and... wait, what?

2013-01-30 04:49:29 PM
He maybe has a point, cause, like, I've been playing Mass Effect and I kind of want to see him turned into a Husk.

DON'T TALK ABOUT ARCHIE COMICS LIKE THAT!!!!

South Korea, Japan, and most of Europe have tons of gamers. And yet they manage not to go on shooting rampages every few weeks. Wonder why? Could it be because they don't have a 1-1 gun-person ratio in their countries? Nah....

2013-01-30 04:50:21 PM
He's right you know. Britain, Australia, Canada, and Japan curbed their gun problem through tight regulations on video games.

... Wait.

2013-01-30 04:51:05 PM
Bet the gun nuts come out in support of what he said.

2013-01-30 04:51:06 PM
I think he means "effect"

S video games cause gun violence in the same way Donkey Kong caused rampant barrel throwing attacks targeting Italians.

Well, you see, since they don't have so many guns they feel more.. oppressed by their govenment! And that keeps them hiding in their homes! Yeah.. and if we had less guns, we couldn't even... well... we'd have more shootings, I know that much!

Yeah, but the governments of all those countries are rounding up citizens every day and forcing them into Obamacamps!

2013-01-30 04:55:26 PM
Actually, there's a bigger problem than video games and guns.  It's the fact any of you morons willingly link to Kotaku, for paid promotion (*cough* greenlights *cough*) or elsewise.  Stop doing it.

Wrong, it's Marilyn Manson. He's brainwashing our children to commit these unspeakable acts of violence.

When will we outlaw Marilyn Manson.

That 'walking coprolith' (thanks, MMM - I'm adding that little goody to my insult bag from now on!) doesn't need to worry about puking up bald-faced lies. Those remarks are intended solely for the GOP faithful, who have thoroughly imbibed the Tea-flavored Kool-Aid.

/and if anyone calls him on it, 'That was not intended to be a factual statement'. Remember that little gem?

Classic case of misdirection. Lamar Alexander is not stupid. He is criminally insane. There is a difference.

/I'm lying. He is stupid.

2013-01-30 04:58:21 PM
Yeah. Video games.

Violent crime has been decreasing since the early 90s. Video games - not so much.

Lead poisoning, which is proven to reduce IQ and possibly to increasing aggression, seems like a better fit to the data than video games.

He's just getting pressed by the NRA. If you take the games away then maybe all those people will start buying real guns instead of shooting virtual guns.

For the past few months, I've been playing Red Crucible 2 online. Nice team-based FPS. Free of charge to download and to play.

lh4.googleusercontent.com

At absolutely no time in my non-playing time have I thought of climbing onto the roof of a car in order to scoot up a roof (all the better to spot, and shoot at, enemy helicopters).

Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

2013-01-30 05:04:32 PM
I will ask the honorable senator the same question I asked last time.

Video games have been around for about thirty some odd years

In that time:

- How many people have died because of religion?
- How many have died because of racism or homophobia?

I'll take out the 'How many have dies because they feared their guns being taken away' question

2013-01-30 05:04:33 PM
Let's see the UK and Canada crime rates, they play violent games too.

I'll wait.

2013-01-30 05:05:21 PM
I've played more Skyrim than I'd like to admit, but you don't see me running around shouting at people.

Well... not with an axe in my hand at least.

It's Ice-T's fault.  Once upon a time he was a gangster rapper banned from anywhere but the very fringes of society.  Now he's a constantly employed actor and has a reality show about his weirdly shaped wife.  It's why all the kids are shooting, buying pitbulls and getting cement implanted in their buttocks.

History's. Greatest. Monster.

2013-01-30 05:06:32 PM
Meanwhile, no politician on either side of the aisle is willing to even mention what is, by far, indisputably, the single biggest cause of gun murders in this country:

POVERTY

2013-01-30 05:06:48 PM
Stop attacking the first amendment so you can keep your guns.

I have a shotgun, and I am playing Saint's Row 2, loved GoldenEye on the N64, and played Doom and Wolfenstein back in the day.

I'm even close to committing any of these terrible acts. In fact, I'm actually a pretty terrible shot and couldn't hit a pheasant if my life depended on it, and really suck at FPS's in general.

Now a good RTS or Turn Based Strategy game (La Pucelle Tactics or Civ 5, love both styles), those I really love and excel at.
