there are some people at my office who are pretty territorial with the copier and the toaster oven since we got it two months ago. it browns up chicken breasts real nice (the toaster oven, not the copier).

If no armed security at Office entrance, why not have a pistol handy? Sane, Gentle People don't pose any threat to an attacker unless armed. Also, the Same Sane, Gentle people pose no threat to others, even when armed.

Just like we have that list of things that are a threat to America (someone or some people on this site own it), we need a list of people and things that require armed security/metal detectors.

Elementary schools
Movie theaters
Army bases
Shopping malls
Single family houses
Apartment units
Cars
Postmen,
Etc.

You're right, mass shootings are completely normally and non-newsworthy.

natmar_76: The NRA has one thing right, and it's that people kill people (with guns, and bombs, and poisons, and knives, and even their bare hands).

When you change the culture, you'll reduce incidents like this. Until then, it will still happen.

See, now we're getting down to the heart of the matter. I had always thought PEOPLE were the problem behind all this violence. Guns just sit there idle until some nutter picks one up and starts blasting away with it.

That other article on Fark, with the 5 common-sense ideas, includes people as one of the major components to curbing gun violence. Sure, limiting access to guns will help, but it won't fix the core problem. I mean, what does it say about our culture where shootings and blood and other mayhem is perfectly OK on prime-time TV, but YOU JUST SHOW ONE NIPPLE AND EVERYONE LOSES THEIR shiat!!!

We've got some messed-up priorities.

From now on I'm going to assume that every mass shooting in America was perpetrated by UN operatives in cahoots with the Shartbama administration, with the ultimate goal of confiscating all of our guns, destroying American sovereignty and supremacy, and transforming our land into an Islamosocialist dystopia.

You know, if everyone had their own cubicle, this wouldn't have happened. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a cubicle is a good guy with a cubicle. We shouldn't move towards universal background checks for cubicles because criminals who want cubicles will get them. You can pry my cubicle from my cold dead hands.

Yep, until they get their way and the latest gun-ban-that-won't-do-anything passes. This is how it works, once a group of people decide that they want to do something they grind away and wear down their opponents.

Since nothing is going to happen, be prepared for another few years of news flashes every time someone dies. Unless it's a criminal, because guns are only used to kill innocent people. Amirite?

I'm somewhat torn here.

On the one hand, every farking assault and murder in the US making FARK is pretty goddamned annoying, since there are 300+ million of us so even if we were all secretly Ghandi there'd be over 10 of those stories a day.

On the other, at least we're reflecting an actual awareness that there is crime outside the really statistically weird shiat like mass shootings, and outside guns.

On the third hand-sized dexterous appendage (ladies), that story about the dude running over his wife, calling 911, and then curb-stomping her was not good for my mood that day, at least guns are a clean-kill weapon more or less.

Kyro: [sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net image 437x555]

Oh, yes, Somalia and Uganda have less than 5 guns per 100 people, that infographic is totally, definitely using a completely legit source with a solid methodology.

Clearly the answer is more guns.

Sadly, less guns is not going to stop this either. We have a violent society. We glorify violence in media. We've made the military the most important thing in the nation, and arguably the world. Our favorite sports are extremely violent. We still promote violence, not just in action but in speech and interpersonal behavior, as a means to ending disagreements. We treat each other with shocking disregard in every day life. Yet we act surprised when people act violently.

Gun control will not stop random violence. People will use other weapons, bombs, chemicals, or even hand weapons. Gun control is treating the effect, not the cause. The NRA has one thing right, and it's that people kill people (with guns, and bombs, and poisons, and knives, and even their bare hands).

When you change the culture, you'll reduce incidents like this. Until then, it will still happen.

They also happened before the current media fascination with gun crime. A year ago, someone shooting 3 people in an office complex would have been local news maybe. But News Flash? Nope.

I don't have strong feelings either way on the issue, but I think the current trend of news flashing every time a person is shot is unnecessary.

If the man was Muslim, it's just typical work place violence. Nothing to see here, folks.
