That's the sort of stockholm syndrome we had about quality for far too long.  You're happy that it died after 10 years?  My 16 year old Subaru Outback Legacy just started its return trip from the moon and still runs like a top.

It was still running great when I traded it in for a new car, a Pontiac Sunfire and a total POS.   I had it tuned up and replaced the brakes once before a cross country trip, other than that no service at all.  I barely remembered to change the oil in that car.  I am not saying all Cavaliers were that good, just mine.

That's not a bad thing.

I had an '85 GMC pickup. It was dark blue with gold trim. It was goddam beautiful. I had it almost ten years. I miss you, baby.

My first car was a hand-me-down 1985 Olds cutlass cruiser wagon, like the one below, but without wood paneling:



Loved that car.  Two weeks before it was supposed to become 100% mine (I'd had to share it with others in the family), my Mom wrecked it.

DROxINxTHExWIND: '85 was a good year. I was 9 years old. I had just gotten a new Coleco Vision. All I had to do everyday was play throw back tackle football and try to hump our neighbors daughter. I was old enough to catch the Metro bus by myself and still young enough to expect a lot of toys for Christmas. I was innocent enough to chase squirrels with my best friend but I knew enough about the world to be wary of police. Michael Jackson was still black and we didn't yet know that he was molesting Webster. Cartoons came on weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings so if you slept until noon on the weekend you were SOL. I still thought wrestling was real and it had good guys and bad guys who were clearly defined. And my biggest problem in the entire world was that I had a Huffy and I wanted a Mongoose.

LOL, Chrysler Laser.  Man that car was a lot of fun.  Friend of mine got one new in 85 when we were seniors.  Four banger turbo, that car was fast.

Funny thing about cars. My family had two supposedly identical cars. Let's just say it's clear one was built on a good day, and one was built after that UAW local had had an all-night bowling and beer party.

This was what I had from Coleco:

People buy lot of cheap cars, and fewer expensive cars.

1985 Renault Alliance. Sure the door handles and windows cranks broke off if you used them but it had the heart of a champ. By 91, you couldn't get parts for it. I took an alternator in to be rebuilt because 'Chrysler screwed the brand and shut the factories down 'fore they could build the spares inventory" (Repairman talk for this is gonna cost you).

The day after Chrysler had it for a recall (the plastic heat exchanger could burst filling the passenger area with super heated liquid) it stopped running. I traded it in on a Colt and they towed to poor Renault out of the drive way.

A few days later, I was going down the road an a tow truck passed me. Guess what was on the back? Yep. Fast forward a few weeks. I'm driving up I-255 when guess what passes me? I kid you not. As soon as they got around me, they pulled over to the side of the highway. Two rednecks jumped out of the car and started kicking the poor car.

I bought my first car in 1985, a 1983 VW Rabbit GTI with 15K on it. That thing lasted 130K and 8 years, and by the end it was a wheezing rattly invalid. It was fun as hell, though. Crank sunroof FTW!

my first car was in '87 - an '82 VW rabbit in that godawful flesh-toned "mexican tan." a 5 speed. great car. drove it for five years until all the oil leaked out the oil filter and it seized up.

My cav lived to 14. Very little maint, parts cheap and plentiful, total cost of ownership way less than an 'invincible' Honda from the same era.

The only Cars from 1985 that are worth anything.
