I guess planning for high winds in a place known for high winds is too much for these bozos.

Obviously the concept of NIMBY is well-understood, though the more-relevant MTBF might be a good thing to introduce...

I'll bet they got a really good deal on those Chinese bolts.

Came for this.

This just in : Mechanical things break.

2013-01-30 01:13:09 PM
I'll see your "turbine fell down", and raise you a 'sploding turbine

No? How about a turbine fire?

You're not sufficiently outraged. This means that wind power is doomed and we should build more coal plants because nothing ever goes wrong with coal plants.

2013-01-30 01:27:05 PM
Obviously this means green energy is a failure and global warming is a hoax.

And we're done here.

Someone f**ked up with their bending moment/shear calculations on the foundation bolts.

Wind turbine collapses in high wind

Really? I mean, come on, really?

2013-01-30 01:28:43 PM

Man On Fire: Obviously this means green energy is a failure and global warming is a hoax.

Exactly. Cuz we all know that oil-extraction industries have never resulted in any accidents ever.

2013-01-30 01:28:51 PM
Can we get some NASA engineers in there to help?

The new one will be designed to last 25 years but will actually last about 400 years.

and will cost eleventy bajillion dollars, I know

Given the other reading selections down the bottom right hand side I'd go out on a limb and guess "Fair and balanced" with regard to wind energy is not terribly high on their list of priorities.

Wind energy: is it a threat to mankind?

I'm just asking questions here.

2013-01-30 01:30:38 PM
How long will the contamination last? Millions of years?

2013-01-30 01:30:55 PM
Well, that blows... or did, and should... oh you know what I mean... or did

Do you see over yonder, friend Sancho, thirty or forty hulking giants? I intend to do battle with them and slay them.

2013-01-30 01:32:14 PM
Considering how reviled the thing was I wonder if it had some help falling down?

/It was the wind govna.....

2013-01-30 01:34:00 PM
It can't withstand 50mph winds?

2013-01-30 01:34:24 PM
We have these things all over the place here in the Flyover States(TM). I've always been a little concerned about what would happen if a tornado (also not uncommon here) were to get ahold of a few of those things and start throwing blades as big as a semi-truck around like a giant ninja.

2013-01-30 01:35:04 PM
I heard they put windmills rated at 50 Marys per hour in locations that were known to have upwards of two hundred Marys per hour cried on a regular basis.

Maybe just this particular wind farm? They all appear to be Scottish wind farms.

2013-01-30 01:35:39 PM
In this movie wind turbines go rogue and run across country killing people.

SUCK IT GREENIE-WEENIES

2013-01-30 01:35:58 PM
Somebody screws up the foundation of a wind-turbine installation and it falls down, hurting nobody and resulting in a small loss of money --------> "zOMG green energy is a scam and global warming is a myth and fark those damn hippies, we need to get rid of these damn windmills!!!!."

BP/Haliburton/TransOcean exhibit repeated systematic neglect of safety standards culminating in an accident that kills 8 people and spews toxic sludge all over the Atlantic, ruining fisheries and devastating tourism, -------------------------> "Wait, that happened? oil is too expensive, let's build a pipeline across the whole continent."

Sounds gay.

I eagerly await the day where this is as big a news story as a downed power line.

2013-01-30 01:37:09 PM
Wait, you mean a large population has outliers?

How statistically obvious!

Navy beans give me terrible wind. You decide. Just throwing out answers.

2013-01-30 01:37:48 PM
Other areas of the "shires" with stone churches and houses in "dingly dells" are also inappropriate for wind, he said.

Trouble in Hobbiton! Turbine! Starts with a "T" and that rhymes with "T" . . . er, it's the same letter as "T" . . . oh never mind

You've never seen a giant ninja. NO ONE HAS.

oldfarthenry: Someone f**ked up with their bending moment/shear calculations on the foundation bolts.

I would be willing to bet on sub-standard bolts. The base flange appears to be unharmed.

2013-01-30 01:41:04 PM
The ones around my house are built like a brick shiathouse. I though we were all going to Oz last night with the crazy high winds. The turbines whoosh-whoosh-whoosed all night long.....and they're still whoosh-whoosh-whoosing all day today. I hate it when they're loud.

2013-01-30 01:41:19 PM

Hey, it's not my fault that they teach us that stuff way back in first year!

I'm sure more than a few Farkers are wondering at which bar this comment was made, we have a good number of chubby-chasers here.

Also, MaudlinMutantMollusk made me smile, I wasn't expecting the reference.
:)

Reading the related article headlines, I get the feeling that the Telegraph doesn't like wind turbines.

Or resonant frequency calculations.

Trees that don't bend with the wind, won't last the storm.

2013-01-30 01:42:36 PM
You had ONE job, wind turbine!

Yep. Should've used ARP fasteners.

My 2 year old wooden fence blew down last night in those winds too.

Clearly fences are a waste of time and will never catch on.

Shiat happens. Don't like it? Build a nuke plant in your backyard.

I'm sorry, I will try to fossil up some more fuel for my rage.

Oh and the residents should be happy now. One less turbine means that the place will be less windy now.
