Backcountry boiler - That's a neat play on the ancient "hobo stove" but only useful if *all* you want to do is boil water.  It looks really efficient for doing that.

My suggestion for it is to add some kind of optional attachment that allows for simmering.  Maybe some kind of "sheathe" that covered the top bottle/chimney that you would remove when boiling water and use as a pot.  You could boil some water, pour it into the sheath/pot with your simmer meal, and then place it on the bottom portion of the stove which should still have hot coals and still be able to take more natural fuel (you wouldn't have the chimney but your goal at that point would be simmering and not boiling).

Many people who do non-thru hikes for weeks at a time, like a good evening meal which means meals that require simmering (pasta, rice, etc.).

I hope not. I got some awesome marshmallows and some drinking vinegar should be arriving in the next day or two. And the pants I'm wearing came off Kickstarter and they're the best pants I've ever owned.

The electric harmonica sounded really interesting but it turns out it was just a farking pickup for a regular harmonica. It would have been fun to be able to retune the harmonica completely or use it as a terrible midi controller, but this is just a different style of amplification.

Well, that wasn't very incredible. In fact, most of that stuff existed before, in different forms.

I still don't trust Kickstarter, and I'd never throw my money at anything on it... Even if it were something I really wanted. I'm glad some people are okay with gambling like that, but I have better things to do with my cash than to give to someone who may or may not produce something in the distant future.

SMBC Comics is doing a pretty awesome kickstarter for the new book coming out. Looks to be worth dropping the money on to get the book and a bunch of extras if you want.

Pretty cool. The guy had a Kickstarter goal of $300. He got over $90,000 in pledges. Needless to say, it took him a while to fulfill the orders.

Of those on the list I'm familiar with, one didn't work anywhere near like what was promised, and the other one came to market, but the product quality was so shiatty that many people never got the product, and those that did tended to get full refunds (after making a lot of noise).  Its now more than 2 years since funding and they're still looking for a "new" manufacturer to do a second run.

The guy who invented that used to work on biological weapons for a defense contractor.  Got laid off and discovered his joy.  Cool transition!
