shortymac: Muta: Could someone help this 50 y.o. out? Why are bronies cool?

The second most popular threads, after questionable porn, are bronie threads on 4Chan. I don't get it.

It's a very well written show, very pixar-like, kid-friendly but with adult humor so both kid and parent can enjoy it. It's my cartoon anti-depressant really, I find the show very relaxing.

As a chick I also appreciate that it's a "girly" show that doesn't focus on crap like boys and make-up. The prom and wedding episodes are some of the best episodes.

Now for why this show exploded into the fandom force it did? NO IDEA. Hubby and I were talking about this last night, there's lots of great quality fan-made content (music, artwork, etc) for Bronies, it's everywhere. Sure shows like Star Trek and Star Wars have a huge following, but it's just not at this level except for the hardcore fans.

With the exception of Boba Fett I don't know any background characters that the fans took and created back stories for (Derpy, Lyra, DJ Pon3, etc).

/Saw all the parodies online, decided to check out the new show since I loved MLP as a kid
//Got Hubby hooked and now he's a Bronie

The fan music is what finally got me to start watching the show about a year ago. I saw the memes popping up all over the place and thought they were funny enough, but after listening to Alex S and Sim Gretina's music (the first artists I heard), I knew there were some inside jokes I wasn't getting, so I gave it a watch.

Not a bronie, and I like Fark. But goddamn you guys can be some intolerant motherfarkers sometimes.

FirstNationalBastard:

Sure, Rarity is a very girly character, but if anything, the characters are more along the lines of the way Mary Tyler Moore was in the Mary Tyler Moore show... career girls trying to make it in a Stallion's world.

And yet she is portrayed as probably the hardest working and most driven of the six, perhaps with the exception of Applejack. She is constantly shown at work or working and living up to her aspirations to pursue the career she wants. Granted it's a 'girly' career as a fashion designer, but the show clearly depicts her as having earned her own success. She is known, by name, as an excellent designer and is sought out by the highest levels of her trade.

Her flaw is that she is self-centered. She is supposed to represent generosity in the show, yet hardly ever does. But she is easily the most mature and 'adult' of the mane six.

/Her other flaw is tic-tac-toe.

Rarity is self-centered, but she is also generous, sometimes to a fault.

For example, making the dresses for the Grand Galloping Gala.

I wonder how much the Q connection had to do with getting geeky guys into the show?

The major reason I even checked the show out in the first place was because John DeLancie was playing Q again.

Quite a lot i'd say. It was the same for me as well.

About only thing that bothers me tho is that FARK has EqD tag

I am on the 'meh' camp.

However, i dont like how some if the big names in the fandom are trolling/ mocking/ belittling the butthurt people...

Yeah, the butthurt people are making a bigger deal out of it, more than they should... But the other guys arent helping, they are just getting them more riled up...

Have you watched the brony documentary by John De Lacie? They interview The Living Tombstone, it's kinda weird seeing him in RL. He's from Tel Aviv of all places.

The odd thing is that the music scene exploded, sure there's Filk and some fan-made content for other famdoms but none to this extent.

It's interesting how sometimes their "elements" can also be their greatest weaknesses. Rainbow Dash turns her back on Pinkie Pie in "Griffon the Brush Off," Rarity almost never lets Sweetie Belle use her stuff, Applejack lies to Spike in "Spike at Your Service," etc... (just some of the examples I could think of off-hand). I think their "element" only really shines through when it's needed most.

Why's that? If it's linked enough, it looks better than the generic "(Some Guy)" text, IMO.

Yeah, saw the documentary. I thought it was decent, but I still think the fanbase and popularity could be better explained for outsiders.

You're right, though. It is pretty unique that the music scene is so big with this fanbase. I think part of it is just, sort-of like momentum... Someone made some music, other people heard it and tried their hand at making music, and it built from there. No way to really prove this hypothesis, but it seems plausible to me.

jayhawk88: Does Japan have a history of getting into American cartoons? I was always under the impression that they were very picky about what parts of American culture they chose to embrace.

Yes.  Not all of them of course, but there are some that are popular that you wouldn't expect.

As others have pointed out, the Disney stuff is always popular.  If a property is really popular, it will often get its own japanese-produced anime version or spin-off.  I remember Stitch having his own japanese anime series where he washed up in Japan somehow and teamed up with a karate-practicing  6 year old girl.

Peanuts and its cartoons had a big following, though in Japan, they titled it "Snoopy" after the most popular character there. There's a whole bunch of spin-off merchandise and even japan-exclusive video games.

Wacky Race, the horribly-schticky, badly-animated, Hanna Barabera car race cartoon has a surprising cult following in japan.  Spawned a tie-in video game in the late 90s.

Power Puff girls, as I think someone else mentioned already.

The Timmverse DC superhero cartoons, especially B:TAS and Justice League

South Park

TMNT.  had their own homegrown japanese anime series at one time

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Its hard to guage if MLP will be popular, but the Japanese seem to like their foreign cartoons to be well-done and quirky in some way., so MLP may fit right in.

ModernLuddite: I watched the first two episodes, and I don't get it. It's a show for young children. Does the show get better? Or are bronies actually emotionally disturbed adults and paedophiles?

//not trolling. I am an adult who enjoys cartoons.

The first two episodes kind of sucked. Yes it gets much better.

/also pedophiles are not attracted to ponies so I don't know where that nonsense keeps coming from.

I expect them to do pretty well.

I have a working theory that the brony music hitched along with the dubstep movement. Electronically generated music works well with the nerdy community who might otherwise not be traditionally musically inclined.

I don't think the Japanese fans really got the Powerpuff Girls. Craig McCracken was basically parodying anime and its obsession with schoolgirls and monsters. When they came out with Powerpuff Girls Z . . . an anime version of a parody of anime . . .

Bronies don't bother me in the slightest. If it's okay for women in their mid-twenties/early-thirties to start looking at baby catalogs and dreaming of when they'll become mothers, why is it weird for men of the same age to start watching the very best kids' TV and dreaming of when they have a little daughter or son of their own?

Don't believe me? Read this, as it more or less explains Bronies completely. http://www.fimfiction.net/story/1888/my-little-dashie

It's no weirder than those Chuck Jones cartoons with the enormous dog looking after the tiny kitten that were popular when the Bronies' and Pegasisters' dads were 25-35 years old. Media will always cater, albeit unexpectedly, to natural life stages.

I can't help but think part of the backlash is that the decesion was made by Hasbro to sell more toys (I know...I know... on The Hasbro Channel who knew) and not by the writers. Basically Hasbro said "Here, work this into the plot or go find another job."

I know that the show was conceived to sell toys but Lauren Faust figured she might as well make it an awesome show.

Except it's not.

It's still adults buying into and addicted to something that's animated and packaged for kids.

I'd say the same thing for adults who dig much of anything that's on modern US stations in kiddy-watching hours though.  Sure, even spongebob could provide a laugh, but it's still pre-packaged puerile and annoying garbage for adhd kids with low standards.  Adults who drool over such things are the lowest common denominator.

Do you know how farking bad Lazytown, Imagination Movers, The Freshbeat Band, and oh god... The Wiggles....can be?

omeganuepsilon: It's still adults buying into and addicted to something that's animated and packaged for kids.

Yeah, well, the anime I had in mind for this analogy was more like Sailor Moon.

Really, I think this phenomenon could have been centered around anything. Although bronies will tell you the animation or the characters are great, I think it's just incidental. It's really just a rallying point more than anything; an excuse to be a part of a "community", whatever it may be.
The fact that it's especially girly means that people call it gay, and childish, and because of this it attracted the kind of people who believe that being persecuted is some kind of virtue. And these people aren't going to turn around and persecute others, no matter how socially-unacceptable their behavior is. So naturally it attracts losers and weirdos. Rinse, repeat, wipe hands on pants.
The whole thing is just a strange planetary alignment, signifying nothing except that there are a lot of helpless people with rock-bottom self-esteem and no friends on the internet.

In real life, bullying and social exclusion weeds these people out. But really, they don't deserve to be further stamped on, that's not going to help anyone. This is probably the most enjoyment they're getting out of life.

doglover: Carth: Bronies are just furries who don't dress up right? Or is there a significant overlap between bronies and furries?

Not much overlap, per se.

All furries like ponies, but most bronies aren't furries.

Hm... well, I'm a non-furry brony and I know at least one person who's a furry but hates My Little Pony.

I'm sure there's a lot of furry/brony crossover though. Just browse fan artwork and you'll inevitably find a lot of evidence for that. Warning: can not be un-seen.
