What we're dealing with here is a complete lack of respect for the law.

For all the success of the first Cannonbal Run movie had, it's really quite astonishing how cheap and lazy the second one was. There's a reason that effectively killed Needham's career and knocking Burt Reynolds out of the A-listers club.

But we're all disappointed that Smokey and the Bandit 3: Smokey IS The Bandit never happened, correct?

This is the entertainment law equivalent of Miranda v. Arizona.

The movies Hal Needham made were crimes against humanity but the greatest law comes the worst of defendants.

Wait, you mean studios will claim that insanely profitable movies never turn a profit in order to screw over the talent?

You mean this has happened with films like Return of the Jedi, the Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix? You mean this is what's responsible for Babylon 5 and Bill Nye the Science Guy being cancelled? Say it ain't so.

After making a lot more films, I realized that the movie and TV business is, for all its inefficiencies, one of the best-run big businesses we have. It's very transparent, financially, and the only business I know of that successfully employs trickle-down economics: When movies and shows make money, the profits go right back into making more movies and shows, because the stock price is all about market share.

The best thing about the Smokey and the Bandit movies isn't Burt Reynolds, the car chases, Sally Field, Fred the dog....

No, it's that they got the voice of Fred Flintstone to do the TV dubs for Jackie Gleason, presumably because the Flintstones was a cartoon version of the Honeymooners, though he sounded NOTHING like Jackie Gleason and pretty much dubs the entirety of Sheriff Justice's dialog!!

Yep... it happened. It was shot and then scrubbed after the test screening viewers complained that they couldn't understand what was transpiring on screen. Here's the original trailer...

At the very end when he peels out it's pretty obvious who it is...

Plus Dave Cass the 2nd Unit Director and stuntman on the film confirmed that they shot it with Gleason both as Buford and the Bandit. If it hasn't been destroyed it's locked up in the Universal film vault

Another article while filming...

Evidently the same thing happened to an extent with Mila Jovovitch's Ultraviolet. What was shot and what actually ended up on the screen were quite different according to it's Wiki.

The common "Hollywood accounting" practice is to set up subsidiaries for each film, then charge those subsidiaries heavily for actually doing very little.  So, you have Hansel & Gretel 2: Witch Hunters: The Legend of Curly's Gold 3D, Inc., that gets the budget and is the company actually making the film.  But Paramount (or whoever, can't care who makes that dreck) is responsible for promotion, executives, bookkeeping, etc. - all those little things that 2 Hansel 2 Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D, Inc. doesn't have because it's not a real company.  And those things cost waaaaay more than the movie will ever bring in.  So your investors, who put their money into the film budget (which went to the shell subsidiary) are waiting on profits that will never ever make it on to the balance sheet of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2: Electric Boogaloo, Inc. since all that money goes right back to Paramount as "expenses" instead of actually showing up as profits.

Here's three articles from TechCrunch describing this practice, which isn't what Soderbergh is talking about.

Soderbergh is talking about economics - when a movie makes money, the studio makes more movies. What I'm telling you is that when a movie makes money, the studio makes money, and everybody else possible gets screwed. That's the problem, not whatever economic theory Soderbergh is espousing up there.
