Why are we worried about China again? Half of their urban population will be dead in 10 years due to chewable air.

Dog Welder: Why are we worried about China again? Half of their urban population will be dead in 10 years due to chewable air.

OR they will breed a species of super chinaman, so hardened by decades of exposure to pollution that he has become a new evolutionary branch of humanity.

And somehow they managed to clean that mess up in time for the Olympics a few years ago. A few nights ago the news ran a story on Beijing's pollution; our embassy there has some of the most efficient air scrubbers in the world to clean the pollution from the air inside the buildings. Just one day's operation of their filters and they are black with soot and pollution.

As I recall, a number of candidates during the last election were standing strongly in favor of dismantling the EPA. Wonder how they'd feel now?

I wonder why?

The Scariest Environmental Fact in the World

As the data show, China is now burning almost as much coal as the rest of the world - combined. And despite impressive support from Beijing for renewable energy and a dawning understanding about the dangers of air pollution, coal use in China is poised to continue rising, if slower than it has in recent years.

Or become allergic to clean air. They'll be like fish that develop lungs.

Been there...seen it first hand, it's amazing, gross and really mindblowing. The smog cloud is so HUGE it's almost impossible to wrap your head around the size.

The problem is that the Chinese government does not give a shiat about it's people or the environment in any way shape or form.
(similar to Best Korea)
All China cares about is its fake growth at all costs.

China's economic and environmental crash is going to be the epic train wreck of the millenium. Just hope that they don't come knocking asking for their 16 trillion dollars back and we tell them "sorry, we devalued it to 4 trillion, and anyway, we kind of don't have it. Here's 4-trillion dollar coins though...
The resource wars are going to be what causes WW3.

Einstein said "I don't know what WW3 is going to be fought with, but I know that WW4 will be fought with sticks".

Seriously, how do you manage to dress yourself in the morning?

Also seriously, I remember days in my childhood in Los Angeles that resembled that picture. Not quite that bad, though. The younglings on Fark don't have a clue about how bad it used to be here.

BTW, making businesses reduce/eliminate air pollution is actually enforcement of the private property rights of individuals, and the privatization of public costs that should have been private in the first place (to balance the private profits). Yah the free market (seriously).

Chinese millionaire selling fresh air cans for 80 cents a pop

A Chinese millionaire is reportedly trying to capitalise on his country's worsening air pollution problem by selling canned fresh air. According to reports published in Business Insider, Chen Guangbiao, an entrepreneur worth $740 million has started selling cans of fresh air for people to crack open and suck in.

Since environmentalists claim coal-burning is responsible for the cessation in global temperature increases, China is single-handedly stopping global warming.

As long as their smog stays there, and global temperatures are stabilized, shouldn't you all be happy about this?

TFA also pointed out that the Chinese government was only just now realizing all those heavily polluting factories might have something to do with their smog problem.

CSB time:

Back in the 60's and early 70's, we'd drive to Chattanooga to visit my grandparents. Every time we'd cross over Monteagle Mountain, we'd see in the distance a low-hanging, dull orange cloud. When we reached the Tennessee River it was overhead, and stayed there all the way to Chattanooga. It was created by the steel mills and foundrys in the city, pumping out sulfur dioxide into the air as hard as they could. Then the Clean Air Act was passed, and a few trips later I noticed the air over the city was clear and the sky was blue. Of course, all those cool foundries with their glowing ingots and Bessemer converters were gone as well, but the air was clean.

/the foundry at South Pittsburgh is still there, but closed
//used to like seeing the orange glow inside the building from I-24 as we passed by
///not the acrid orange cloud of smog overhead though

Awww, the liberals are behind on their global warming facts :( That's what happens when you stick to huffington, dailykos, and Fark.

Global warming stopped for a decade, despite more CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere than ever. But the explanations were "b-b-b-but El Nino! and Sulfur dioxide from record coal burning!"

Of course SO2 emissions were much higher 40 years ago than they are now, but we don't want the facts to get in the way of our political ideology/religion now do we?

Once again the eyes of the nation have turned here to this, tiny village in western Pennsylvania, blah bl-blah bl-blah. There is no way this winter is ever going to end, as long as this groundhog is unable to see his shadow. I don't see any way out. He's gotta be stopped. And I have to stop him.

I know someone who recently spent a few months over there. He said it was commonplace for people who you were talking with to clear their sinuses right on the street in mid-sentence. Pick their nose, plug a nostril and blow, whatever. He assumed it was because of the air quality.

Well, all I know is in '17 after they shipped me off to fight, some New York financier rolled in here one day and hog-glowsered and tub-wankled my grandfather into mining out the whole town in exchange for shares in something called the United Coke Company. Do you know what those stock certificates are worth today? JUST ABOUT THE FINEST OUTHOUSE WALLPAPER YOU'VE EVER SEEN! We were forced to become what you drove through today; a burnt out coal field and the biggest icebox graveyard this side of the Ohio foundry belt! And that's why I *never* let a banker go!

I'm no liberal, I was a republican for 20 years, until I quit the party a few months ago, and have always been pretty conservative. I voted for G.W. Bush both times, for instance, and voted Republican from Dole vs. Clinton straight through to McCain vs. Obama.

I've yet to see any credible source claiming that global warming has stopped for a decade. In fact, I'm not sure how anyone could say that with a straight face with 2012 being the hottest year on record unless they are simply not interested in forming a world view around objective facts.

But by all means, you keep on fighting that "good fight".
