My brother was a roadie for years and years back in the 90's thru about 2005. He lived in Seattle. They group of guys he worked with tended to get a tour work 2 months to a couple of years. When they got home the would do nothing as long as they had money, when that ran out they got another job.

Now he lives in Vegas and works the stage for a large Cirque show.

They also use a lot of local people. You don't need to travel with someone just to run microphone wires and move speakers. That's what I used to do, for small bands at local venues.

And also, your sound guy doesn't know how to EQ my room. He doesn't know my equipment or people. If you start clipping or overloading the channels, we're gonna have problems.

/There definitely isn't any glory. I've slept under a stage while the band was playing.

/spent a couple years as sound/lights/house tech and handyman.

Those guys work incredibly hard. That is not nearly as romantic a job as it seems. You don't hang with the band. You live in a bus, and not a sweet million dollar bus like the band has. Stayover? Sure, the band is at the Four Seasons, you and your boys are sharing a room at the Motel 6. Get on the bus about 1 am, try and sleep for 4 or 5 hours and get up to do it again.

I can only imagine the only peace in their work lives is if there are 2 nights of shows in the same arena.

So, I doubt they are doing blow and banging groupies. There is a great book on this, and to my knowledge, the only book on it. Grateful Dead roadie Steve Parrish wrote a great memoir of his 40 years working for the band (and Jerry solo) all the way up until Jerry died. It is absolutely worth a read, even if you aren't a deadhead. It is called 'home before daylight'

Are guitar/drum/keyboard techs lumped in with the roadies?? Do they handle gear also during loading and unloading?? Or are they higher up the food chain??

Yeah, I don't get it either. They'll always be "that crappy local band that played at Arthur's on Dodge St" to me, but I have some friends who are crazy about them. I guess they have a huge cult following - they book an entire cruise ship every year.
