Every day that election-stealing neoconservative evangelical authoritarian coont-for-brains shiatlicker draws breath is another day adding to the mounting pile of evidence that Cheney's evil spirit enjoys the benefits of bilocation. Draw a silver cord across the ley line to destroy him, and let us be done with it.

I dunno, I recognized him by the time I got to "shiatlicker".

FYI Americans: Harper is not cute. In no way is he a nice guy. His government is in the process of selling our country off in chunks to any overseas investor with a few billion to throw around. He is dedicated to undermining and dissolving meaningful environmental protections and assessments at every opportunity. His party has engaged in some very dirty voter suppression in key ridings, including calling voters to falsely tell them their polling station had moved.

He's a Canadian Dubya, probably marginally smarter and less religious, but far more smug.

Biggest difference is that he's in charge of a sandbox that's 10 times smaller than Dubya's was. While it means he can sometimes push through unpopular policies (omnibus, anyone), it also means that there's less room to bury and hide the turds.

I wish Wikileaks would start paying attention to the Canadian government, I'm sure there's some shockers out there.

It's what you get at the end of four elections in six years: an exhausted, fed up electorate and no single strong opposition on the left. I suspect Ontario may go the same way shortly, and it scares me.

I'm afraid that wasn't the issue. The issue is that the centre-left votes split which left the Conservatives to win many ridings that they would have come in 2nd or 3rd in if we had a sensible instant run-off system. The massive upswing in NDP voting is a clear indicator that many people who fled the Liberal party would have much preferred a minority gov't situation... probably a Lib-NDP coallition.

And if we go blue in Ont, we are so farked. Do people not remember Harris? The party under Tory isn't markedly different in ideology.

All they need to do is learn to combat US-style campaign messaging. They've been taken to school in the last two federal elections purely because of that. I think we *might* be ok in Ontario because the GTA has witnessed how effective right wing governing is in Toronto, it's going to depend on how effective Wynne's going to be at getting the 905-ers to realize how dangerous the conservatives are to the middle class. Horvath can help with that message.

/Yes, I'm actually a 905-er but my neighbours are fools for the most part

qorkfiend: So he's a modern American "conservative"?

So far he's managed to avoid talking about rape, but yeah. When I saw this Twitter nonsense my first thought was "hmm he's trying to distract from whatever he's really up to this week". I wasn't sure if it was the China trade deal, immigration reform, one of the pipelines, the First Nations protests, the free trade deal with the EU, or the Canadian military in Mali. A quick Google search showed me that he was speaking to the Conservative caucus today, and claimed it's been 7 years since "Canadians placed their trust in this government" (which was elected with less than 40% of the vote less than 4 years ago), and that "Our Conservative Party is the family party" (some of us have learned from the US to beware anything with Family in the name or description).

His legislative priorities are Families, Public Safety (read: further overhauling our criminal justice system), Pride in being a Canadian Citizen (nationalism as a legislative priority? Seriously??) and Personal Financial Security ("Red tape must go ... and taxes must stay low," he added").

Whenever he speaks I remember that this is the guy that promised a right wing American think tank "You won't recognize Canada when I'm through with it".

I'm not that angry at Harper. He has a majority. That gives him the right to try things his way. Us left wingers might not like it but he won. Dirty or fair, he won.
Get over it. When our ideologies win next we will do things our way but until then suck it up biatches. Quit whining like the republicans "OMG liberalism is back" bullshiat. You left wingers are making me wish i weren't one of you. We lost.

However this was an exceedingly close one. The Conservatives won a minority last time with 36% of the popular vote. Only one percent less than they got to get this majority gov't.

This wouldn't be a problem if the parties were spread out across the spectrum, but in Canada we have one rightist party and 1 centrist party and 2 more left leaning parties (3 if you could the Greens, but they only have one seat). Since the Liberals have been in freefall since the CPC began US-style campaigning those votes predominately went to the NDP. Right now we have a situation where votes to the left of the conservatives get split. Together the Grits and the NDP accounted for 49% of the popular vote. Clearly Canada is a nation that wants to be run in a centre-left manner... but a weakness in the parliamentary election process instead sets us up with a Conservative majority.

Hopefully we can get them out, or at least into a minority position next election, before anything too undoable is legislated.

And as someone who is ok with the Conservatives (Albertan, go figure), I could have and said the same things when the right was fractured thanks to there being a PC and Reform parties.  It comes down to don't blame the winning team because your team sucks.  Given how crappy things are economically in most of the industrialized world I think we are relatively well off myeslf.

It's true, I'll take the CPC over the GOP any day of the week and twice on Sundays. But you have to admit, the CPC is taking a lot of liberties with their majority gov't. Starting to dismantle the social safety net, passing (or trying to pass) odd crime bills, it's taking the country in a direction the majority of it clearly doesn't want it to go.

At least when the Liberals were in charge, they would do something that conservatives wouldn't complain about and some things the left wouldn't mind. I guess that's the good thing about pursuing a centrist doctrine, you won't go too far wrong. I didn't agree with everything the Liberals did, but at least I didn't have to worry about the conservatives taking the country in a more American, less socially democratic direction. Now, I do.
