A spry looking 82 year old newlywed

Grats to them

You know what ... no, i'M not happy about this.

38 years they've been together and they can only finally feel safe to come out now?

WTF is wrong with people? I'm straight and the longest relationship i've had is ten years.

Hat's off to you guys, but this should have been able to happen long ago.

2013-01-30 12:24:48 AM
I don't know why it's such a surprise.
When a guy owns that many Jim Nabors records, I think it's a given.

2013-01-30 12:27:35 AM
I thought he was dead too.

Oh well....here's wishing them both a happy marriage.

2013-01-30 12:30:20 AM
I could have sworn he died a couple of years ago. Maybe that was Goober. At any rate, it's amazing to see so many people coming out now. It used to be a big deal when a celeb came out, now I can't even keep track of them all.

2013-01-30 12:32:46 AM
Gooolllllllllleeeeeee!

2013-01-30 12:33:03 AM
A Jim Nabors cover song seems appropriate enough here. (pops, not the Countdown)

Also, congrats to 'em!

He never claimed to be straight (at least not in my lifetime, and I'm 35) but it's been widely known and accepted that he was gay.

I'm proud and happy to see him come out in this way. Good for him, and congrats!

2013-01-30 12:52:02 AM
Seems like a really nice person by all accounts. Not a secret by any stretch, and I am happy for him that he could have this moment with his partner. I don't think we need to make 80 year olds the voice of progression at all... as long as he is happy, can we just leave him alone?

2013-01-30 12:52:23 AM
For you youngsters, look up some of his music. Amazing talent. Congrats to them.

2013-01-30 12:54:49 AM
Oh, sure. The next thing you'll say is that Rock Hudson is gay.

2013-01-30 12:55:43 AM
Bully! Bully! May the remainder of their lives be filled with noting but mutual love and joy. Huzzah!

I guess I've not paid enough attention to the Hollywood old timers to have known one way or another. I knew about the old Rock Hudson and Jim Nabors urban legend, but I didn't realize that it was part and parcel with rumors about Nabors actually being gay.

I can't imagine what it must be like for someone like him to have lived through so many changes in the 20th and 21st century and to finally get to get married in his 80s. The older generation has lived through so much and it's heartwarming to see a happy ending.

2013-01-30 01:09:16 AM
Not a surprise...I remember hearing rumors back in the 1970s about Nabors being gay. Glad to hear he's happy.

2013-01-30 01:14:35 AM
I didn't know he was gay. Now my Gomer Pyle / Sergeant Carter slash fiction doesn't seem so wrong any more. I guess I'll archive it along with my Sulu / Chekov slash fiction that I wrote ten years ago.

...

What amazes me is that us kids in the schoolyard knew the Jim Nabors/Rock Hudson story, and I think it turned out to be true. At least we know the Rock Hudson is gay part is true. When I saw Andy Griffith on some show like Oprah he kinda rolled his eyes about Jim Nabors and some famous Hollywood star. Not that he said it was a male star.

Imagine that somehow what was a well known secret in Hollywood found its way to our schoolyard.

same thing here. there were a number of gay celebs back in the day who no one ever made a fuss about their gayness.

Paul Lynde, Jim Nabors, and Charles Nelson Reilly come to mind, just to name a few. It was understood they were gay but it wasn't pushed in anyone's face.

I knew he was still alive, but what I'm unsure of is if he still sings before every Indy 500?

Also, I'm 33 and I remember hearing about him not being in the closet when I was 10.  It was the National Enquirer I might add that said it.

/best investigative reporting on the planet
//go ahead and read the Times if you want; they get it right sometimes.

2013-01-30 02:00:06 AM
Huh, and I always thought he was just the guy who sang "Back Home Again In Indiana" at the start of the Indy 500 every year.

2013-01-30 02:42:43 AM
Okay, so I'm 28 years old.. and I've just now realized that "Gomer Pyle" from Full Metal Jacket is a reference to something. That suddenly makes a lot of sense.

2013-01-30 02:45:00 AM
Count me among those who thought he died. Not sure why, but glad I'm wrong and glad he's finally able to get married.

2013-01-30 02:50:43 AM
By the way, how does a liberal state like Hawaii not have same-sex marriage by now?

Well, we finally know what they found in Gomer's pyle.

It was known, but never spoken of because it was career suicide at the time.

From Charles Nelson Reilly's one man show (an awesomely good movie) A very short interview at NBC

"Who do you have to fark to get OFF television?"

But if CNR or Paul Lynde or Jim Nabors ever came out of the closet back in the 60's, you never would have seen them again.

38 years together? Mazel tov!

You're thinking of Goober, who did die a couple of years ago.

As for him being gay, I didn't think it was a secret. My grandma loved his music. She mentioned liking him despite him being, in her words "light in the loafers," and she died 15 years ago.

2013-01-30 03:08:18 AM
Does anyone think my Granni who went to school and was friends with him---WILL FINALLY FREAKING ACCEPT IT? I don't either. She probably won't call and congratulate him either. FEH

Because some folks think that letting a majority decide civil rights of a minority is okay.

Mormons have a strong influence in Hawaiian politics and the predominant Asian cultures are pretty religiously conservative.

It's not that it wasn't "pushed in anyone's face", it's that they were not high enough up the food chain for the tabloid press to go after them.

2013-01-30 03:31:35 AM
Funny, I just watched The Jimmy Stewart/Sandra Dee movie "Take Her, She's Mine" the other day. I think that was Jim Nabors' first movie. He plays the beatnik owner of a coffee shop, with Bob Denver as a beatnik guitar player. Also has James Brolin in an uncredited bit as a college student. It seems like Nabors' dialogue was overdubbed. Guess the heavy accent didn't play well for a big city beatnik.

He has missed 2 out of the last 5 years, onetime he sang on the video screen from hawaii and last year it was just a tape of him singing.

Always enjoyable and the crowd is incredibly appreciative. Hope he makes it this year, just glad he's happy.

15 Indy's and counting.

Seriously. I thought "off the market" meant "Abe Vigoda once again laughes, pisses on a peer's grave".

As for his hmoo hookup, mazeltov. As your years are unlikely to be long, here's hoping you can recall breakfast.

Apparently, you missed the *Because Jeebus footnote in your Constitution.

I'd heard he was quietly closeted, so this move surprises me a bit.

38 years together already.. that's quite respectable.

I don't know how he likes his breakfast, but I hear he likes his dinner mashed.

18 years his junior no less? Gomer Pyle is somewhat of a cougar!
