FTFA: James Edward Davis, Jr., who lives near Dykes on Private Road 1539, told the Dothan Eagle that Dykes pulled a gun on him and his daughter on Dec. 10 after Dykes believed Davis had driven in Dykes' yard. Davis said he reported Dykes to the Dale County Sheriff's Department. Dykes was arrested Dec. 22 and charged with menacing.

And yet he still had a gun

/why?

Oh yeah, it's definitely the gun that caused all this.  Damn guns!

Would it make you happier if he hacked him with an ax instead?

Hmmm. Wonder why he didn't? Maybe because a GUN was handy?

Yes, guns are much easier to get than an ax. Amiright? The guy is crazy. Glad to see you blaming the tool instead.

the theory goes that if maybe crazy people had less access to weaponry with high rates of fire, then maybe less death would be the result.  which, you have to admit, is an argument with some merit.  after all, it takes time to hunt down and chop a school bus full of kids into hamburger meat with an ax.  using a gun?  about 40 seconds sustained fire on full auto.  then pause to reload, and bullet hose the bus again for luck.  shiat, with the right gun you don't even have to get on the bus...you'll shoot right through the damn engine block.

Because "I hope the kid will be OK" posts are so very useful, right?

There's a legitimate, ongoing, nationwide debate going on about taking legal steps to limit access to guns. Any situation that arises where guns are used in an unusual (and therefore newsworthy) criminal act is going to be fodder for that debate. Each such incident has the potential to change minds, and as such is a legitimate reason to continue the debate, folding the incident into the conversation, until the issue is settled. That's worthy of discussion.

No post here about hopes for the child's safety, or prayers for the bus driver, or sympathy for the kids on the bus or their parents will do much beyond making the poster feel good about having said something in empathy or sympathy for the people involved. Such wishes, well-intended as they might be, are not really worthy of discussion.

Hence, this thread becomes a discussion of the larger issues at hand.

/Interesting that not one of your own posts has anything to say about the people affected (precisely the lament here), nor do any of them seem to advance the debate on the larger issue. They're pretty much all snarky comments.

Not that I've tried to be hyper-snarky, but I'm somewhat inured at this point.  There's a guy who built a bunker in his back yard at 2:30 in the morning currently holed up there with a hostage.  I don't care if he has a gun or a morning star or a set of Ginsu steak knives.  There's a guy who built a bunker in his back yard at 2:30 in the morning. That's all this thread should be about.

Unfortunately, I think it's starting to look that way. People are farking unhinged man, for one reason or another. Is it a right-wing media machine that is increasingly moving away from objective reality? Is it a culture of violence that seemingly encourages people to solve their problems with a firearm rather than with words? Is it hyperpartisanship, or the fact that every political and economic debate is now a zero-sum game? Is it because we value winning the argument rather than using the argument to find the right answer?

I don't know, but I'm starting to think this country is becoming collectively unglued.

This is cropping up too much. This is a mental health issue. People do not have access to mental health care or affordable insurance. This is a failure on Justice's part. Arrested on an assault, brandishing a weapon, domestic violence should be handeled with a hold without bond for mental health evaluation.

America is going to have to come to terms with affording health care for those who cannot afford it and provide mental health services.

This man who is committing this act is a veteran. People are saying that he has always been strange. There was plenty of warning prior to this, yet no safety net to diffuse him even when he was charged Dec 22.

We need emergency action from the Feds to enact mental health screening and mental health care and holds on those arrested or detained on violence, stalking, bullying or threat charges.

America needs to seek out the mentally ill and get them help they need now.

Yes, anyone who doesn't wish to do things the way you want to do them isn't truly interested in the safety and well-being of their community. If someone's thought process doesn't follow the way yours does, they are clearly deranged or just, unfortunately and through no fault of their own, too stupid to understand the situation.

But that's okay, you're a kind and benevolent intellectual who will surely instruct the poor uneducated masses on the true nature of the situation. There is no need to entertain *their* ideas, as they are just too vulgar for anyone who considers themselves "civilized". But that's okay, in time, with training, they will come to see this and realize that your way is the only true path to enlightenment and peace.

Bontesla: LadySusan: Gun deaths are horrible. When someone has good data that show a solution I'll be willing to listen. In the meantime I'd rather worry about lack of adequate health care where the real horrible and unnecessary causes of death occur.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/lcod.htm

Gun deaths aren't even much of a statistic here.

Ah. So what's your acceptable threshold of gun deaths? At what point is it too much?

I'm a libbie lib liberal. I think they are all horrible. The problem is, the data just doesn't show how to prevent them. In the meantime, while folks are trying some things out to maybe get good data and a good solution, I'd rather focus on bigger causes of horrible death.

My hypothesis is that it's primarily bad culture mixed with some mental illness. Apparently Canada has more guns than cats and they have very few gun deaths (citation needed). If I were queen I would be focusing on some social changes to improve the culture so folks were less likely to decide that killing was a good idea. I'd also be funding the shiat out of brain research for better approaches to curing mental illness. Also world peace. I'd work on that too. And unicorns with sparkly rainbow farts. Duck_of_Doom: Why can't it be both the gun's and the wielder's fault?

Bring charges against the gun and appoint a public defender and take it to trial.
If you can convince a jury of the gun's peers that it was a willing accomplice acting of it's own volition, you'll win a conviction and you can send the gun to prison.

Now if the gun was forced to go along with this against it's will, you should probably charge the wielder with gunnapping as well.

Debate on issues of policy used to serve as a means of comparing opposing ideas, and then integrating the best thoughts from all points of view. Nowadays, winning the debate is all that matters. Our public discourse is no longer a search for truth, it's a game where shouting louder than your opponent gives you a touchdown.

Absolutely. This is not some concealed carry guy defending himself. This is an unstable arsehole who was arrested for pulling a gun on a guy and his kid for driving on his lawn. Everyone in the neighborhood knows who this guy is. Get their testimony and build a case to...

Lock him up

Have him evaluated by three psychiatrists

Have him committed because he's crazy (normal people don't pull a gun for driving on their lawn no matter how old and crotchety they are) and get him the help he needs

While he's in the klink get a search warrant to unload his bunker

Sell all the guns and ammo confiscated to help offset the cost of his treatment

Best thing I remember about Dothan -- hot boiled peanuts some guy just got done making outside his roadside restaurant. Also, there's this store on your way through that sells awesome bonsai trees. Still want to drive through there again and get one.

The best boiled peanuts are always sold by some guy on the side of the highway with fewer teeth than fingers, who looks like they haven't had a bath in about a year, usually with a big boiling pot and stove setup in the back of their pickup truck.

So while he's holed up with the chillins, we're gonna have to settle for the second best. Ideas?

No idea. However, I have spoken with the guy who sells them on the side of the highway around here (middle GA) and he actually imports his peanuts from somewhere else (ironically enough), like Virginia or someplace like that, I forget. So, apparently peanut selection is very important, and the local grown peanuts aren't the right type to boil up well (get slightly chewy rather than mushy).

Yeah, I'd say we can do better. But not a whole helluva lot better.  We have a much tougher task than any of those countries had.  Bigger, more heterogeneous population; more guns out there; and exceptionally strong legal protection for gun ownership.  I don't think any of those countries ever had anything close to the 2nd Amendment.

We can, and must do better. Sure we need to look at stricter gun laws, but we also need to face up to the fact that Canada, Germany, and Sweden all have high rates of gun ownership with much lower homicide rates. We should prevent loons from getting guns yes, but until we stop being such a violent culture no new laws are going to be worth a good goddamn

How can we prevent loons from getting guns significantly better than we do already?

I think the cultural shift will yield far more fruit, and it's under way.  But it will take a long time.

Handguns are the elephant in the room, accounting for the vast majority of gun violence.  All the uproar about long guns is terribly misplaced.

Perhaps he wants time to communicate his conspiracy theories to the world? Perhaps he wants to speak with an ex-wife?Perhaps he wants a helicopter ride to Canada?

He thought about the kidnapping in advance. He was very specific as to whom he wanted. He left with a hostage that fit the criteria. He's keeping the child alive - and healthy. He doesn't want to lose his bargaining chip.

Yes, the mental illness issue needs to be addressed. But not all mentally ill people shoot children, bus drivers etc. But there is another problem to address other than the insane insistence on owning guns.

That link to "Gun Violence in the USA" isn't very specific.  Which of the many problems with gun violence do you mean?

What gets so many people unusually excited about shootings committed by the mentally ill is the usual lack of any "reason" for the "senseless" shootings.  If people can say, "Oh, that's why it happened, and that couldn't happen to me," then they don't feel personally threatened.  But random shootings by people who could be anywhere?  AAAAGGGHHH!

That's also one reason why the media goes overboard trying to make sense of "senseless" killings: audiences are desperately looking for reasons to believe it can't happen to  them.

Yeah, that means white suburban folks care less about blacks shooting blacks in the ghetto.  Doesn't mean they don't care at all, but they're less likely to take action in effective numbers.

Conversely, blacks in the ghetto probably don't give a lotta shiats about Sandy Hook:  95% white, 1.75% black, median income over $100K.

It's not about race, necessarily.  It's about perceived personal risk, which amounts to the question, "Could that happen to me?"

Sweet Zombi Jesus: the reality is that guns exist and banning reasonable people from owning them is not likely to lessen the danger of less reasonable people.

Except in the United Kingdom and Japan and Germany and Australia and Canada and Sweden and just about every first-world country except the United States where controlling gun ownership has worked exactly that way for years.

You can't legislate away rights. You can't violate the constitution with cruel or inhumane punishments for non-capital crimes. You have to change the Constitution, and I haven't seen anyone even trying to do that yet.

Was the original assault weapons ban ever challenged in court?

Yes -- I don't think it made it to the SCOTUS, but was found constitutional at the appeals level.

That's a case of defining what "arms" means. That's still a ping-pong between Congress and the SCOTUS -- all that's within the legislature's power.

People are for gun control because they havent thought it through. Gun control doesnt mean removing guns from the population, it just means concentrating the guns in the hands of one group.

Your insistence that yours is a nuanced pro-gun view is a boon to the anti-gun lobby. It provides a soft middle to compromise when no compromise is necessary.

Your attitude and views are tools of this administration to force gun control down the throats of all Americans. That's whether you believe it to be so or not.

So gun control down our throats is the atrocity of which you speak? You should man-up and go full Lovelace or get your atrocity meter recalibrated.

The atrocities are the daily shootings they've been committing for the last few months. Highly visible, highly relatable, highly emotionally charged incidents. The messaging has been constant and on-point. Guns are bad. Guns are in the hands of crazies, racists, the unstable, and your neighbors.

You don't have to be Kreskin to figure out who has the power and resources to foment this PR campaign.

An agenda whose steps so far have done little to actually infringe on said rights?

This thread is exactly what the anti-gun agents in this administration want. On one side 2nd Amendment advocates are loosening their stance and are becoming willing to be flexible as to whom may be allowed to own guns. On the other side, gun control advocates are galvanized in their disgust for individual gun ownership.

You're all playing into this administration's hands. This has been a setup from the start.

AAG - my feelings about guns haven't changed much since I attended my first funeral at the age of 10 for a classmate that had been accidentally shot in the chest by his younger sister. Everybody knows the name Natalee Holloway, the attractive blond girl who went missing in Aruba.  Why?  Why do we care about Aruba?  How many people go missing each month?  But she was pretty, and she made good news.  Black youths who live in black neighborhoods with possible gang affiliation being shot by other black youths with possible gang affiliation don't make good news.

Crap, I'm on fark, what am I thinkin'? How big was the gun's clip? Did it have assault bullets? If only our busses had bulletproof windows and panic rooms.

Gun owners do care, because people like this are a minority and make the rest of us look bad. The first and most comments here are all take away guns, not what about the bus driver. Which side is skewed more? You think that with all the guns we have in this country people couldn't go out and commit mass murder on a daily basis? Yet somehow it doesn't happen. This guy is crazy. The laws that are already in place failed. Why would more laws have prevented this?

Next, lets start subbing and greening all the stories about homeowners who defend themselves too, and ya'll can come in and tell us how they should have been raped or killed, or raped then killed. It'll be awesome! The alternative is you'd tell me that if guns were illegal that those criminals that broke in wouldn't have had them. Too late for that. You think that if there was a market, guns wouldn't flow over from Mexico? We certainly don't seem to be able to stop the drugs and there is a war on them.

Also, if you think the laws they're trying to pass have anything to do with murder, you're an idiot. (This is an ad hominem attack, you should point it out and use it to make my argument invalid) Obama admitted in the debates that most gun crime in Chicago is by cheap pistols, but for some reason that's not what they're trying to stop.. why is that? 50% of all murderers are black, and yet that make up 13% of our population. If you want to stop crime, ban black people, it would be considerably more effective than banning a gun used in 2-3% of murders.

Because you want to make sure nuts have easy access to the most effective tools of killing people stupid people have for killing people. What you retarded americans don't really understand is that if there are no guns to buy without a long wait, either the moment passes, or most 'criminals' of this ilk are actually pretty normal people who are not in gangs and wouldn't know how to buy on a blackmarket unless you could just buy a gun off of craigslist. I'd be surprised that this is complicated for folks, except that even sane, well adjusted people talk shiat about what they could do all the time, and yet can't seem to muster up the energy or organization for it. If it's easier to get or buy a gun, it's easier to get or buy a gun.

Actually the most effective means of killing someone is not a gun, it is most likely poison or using a bomb. Poison is low profile and has a high rate of death, and a bomb does not require aim, or you to even be in the area of the victim.

But you keep thinking guns are this golden murder machine that kills people, despite 95% of gunshot victims surviving.

If "yes the results would be the same", then the inanimate object is not the problem. If no, then there is some factor making these crimes quite deadly. What could it be?

I wouldn't mind it.

We are completely vulnerable in a vehicle with children and no way to lock out nutcases who want to get in (Since that would understandably defeat the purpose of having emergency exits for the kids.) We're also notoriously predictable since we drive the same route day after day at the same time.

It's a ridiculously easy target for anyone with half a brain.
