Hahaha....no. The brother had needs, most likely. That's why they were all so bent out of shape about sin.

Given that Old Believers seemed to think drinking water or breathing air is a sin, I think it's more likely they were just self-loathing.

An interesting story, and mostly sad, but thanks subby.

That was an interesting read. Good find, subby.

They share some similarities with some of the extreme right-wing today who want to isolate themselves from the rest of the country in some kind of warped utopia: Indepence, USA

Except these nutters probably won't actually go through with it and leave the rest of us alone.

Excellent article, and nice to see that there still exists that kind of isolation today.

No word on what they thought of the helicopter the geologists arrived in.

Did you ever see Heimo's Arctic Refuge? Not nearly the same level of isolation, but still amazing.

That was incredibly depressing.

These aren't some wild animals where you have to watch with stoicism as their young get eaten by predators. These are human beings. If they don't want to be airlifted out of there to save their lives, fark 'em! They're clearly not thinking straight, since they've lived out in the woods for decades. Save their lives now, and deal with the emotional fallout later.

Hey libertarians: You want to live in a completely free society?

That's where you should go. In Siberia no one will ever crush your freedoms or suppress your rights..... nor even notice you are there.

The scientist in me finds this story fascinating and wonders how such extreme isolation would alter group dynamics and social hierarchies.

The pampered consumerist in me finds this story appalling and wonders what those women used for tampons.

As a linguist, I'm interested in how the womens' language evolved. From what and into what? What were the different pressures on their everyday lives that helped shape their language?

Pretty cool stuff.

Periods tend to falter if you are forever on the edge of starvation. Ask an Olsen twin.

Fascinating indeed in a "human zoo/religion ruins everything" kind of way.

The boys would have some strange thoughts about they're sisters that is guaranteed. Lot's of masturbating etc.

i found that a very difficult read for their suffering. the murder of the mans brother led them to this paltry existence. i doubt putin's clowns will do the right thing and see to it the family gets to live out their lives in warmth and comfort with full stomachs and Mtv.

david_gaithersburg: Interesting article reminding us of the dangers posed by so-called-progressives.

Don't start that shiat here. It was just as much the lack of nutrition that killed them as disease from modern society. Yes, they probably would have been better off not being introduced to the rest of the Soviet citizens, but weaker societies always fall before stronger ones. That's not Left or Right, that's just history.

The scientists should have chronicled the family and left them to their own sense of freedom. They shouldn't have tried to homogenize them into the communist society like they did. But you can't really fault do-gooders for trying to do good. You can only fault them for failing to have the foresight that taking these people away from the only life they knew would end up killing them.

You should read the story again. They did not want to flee into the the wilderness, they did so to escape being murdered by so-called-progressives. So sad, we can never allow this history to repeat.

Latch: From the HN comments on this article:

Recent request from Agafia for someone to join her/help her

If she is in her 60s now, it seems not altogether impossible that she would last another 15 years, like her father. A person moving in with her to help tend to her could end up spending a decade or two in isolation from others.

No, in Siberia, you either get tough or die. That's why it's been used as a unwalled prison at times in Russian history. Siberia is a gorgeous, harsh, strict mistress that brooks no safewords and shows no pity or mercy, she will beat you when she likes and fark you when she likes.

There are people who don't have david_gaithersburg on ignore? Huh. I quickly get sick of threadshiatters.

Anyway, this was a fascinating read. Farking Russia, man. I guess this is as close as we'll ever get to having time travelers from the past visit our wacky future.

Not everyone is afraid of different ideas and open debate. I expect I'll get banned for pointing out that these people fled into the wild to keep from being murdered with the other 20,000,000 people who lost their lives during The Great Purge.

It comes from 1978, that is the same year i was born. Not really news, more like olds.

/interesting story though

Minecraft survival-mode LARPing before it was cool. But it's a lot harder to create an elaborate underground base when a single swing of a pick doesn't cleanly remove a cubic meter of solid rock, and you can't carry thousands of tons of rock in your pockets at once.
