Let's see, 50 miles from my house. Sounds about right. Plus, as none of the submitters for this story have noted, kids in Chicago know what gunfire sounds like!

You'll do anything for attention when your town's Wikipedia page is this pathetic:

Cary in popular culture

The interior of the bed and breakfast room that Bill Murray's character stays in, in the 1993 film, "Groundhog's Day," was built in a warehouse in Cary.

Suzanne Evenson of Cary was featured on HGTV's show House Hunters International on December 8, 2010, showcasing her family's move from Cary to Dubai.

Maggie Mitchell and friends from the class of 2004 were featured on MTV'shiat, High School Stories. They concocted a senior prank which included launching a boat into the Trojan trench. MTV came to Cary and recreated this.

In all fairness, I lived in Adams Morgan in DC for 2 years and have been living in the metro area for about 10 and let me tell you that I 100% agree with the gentleman from BFE, Georgia.

Also, came for a Brandon Lee reference and saw it was done in 2.

We had a Shooter-On-Campus drill, at a school where we are all wearing uniforms. The scenario was for a student to have started shooting. SWAT moves in and asks the first "shooting victim" what the shooter was wearing. A dumbfounded look was the only reply :P

It's a sick, sad world when tornado drills have been replaced by school shooting drills. That said, they ought to make the experience as real as possible. Blanks are a great idea and good way of identifying which teachers are veterans who may have undiagnosed, untreated PTSD and are in need of treatment.

Do they pump smoke through the halls for the file drills?
Roll in the high-powered fans and rig some windows to blow in for the tornado drill?

In all fairness, schools do a monthly fire drill, just in case the school catches fire during school hours. There have been more school shootings than there have been schools burning down during school hours, so honestly, why not start some form of training and defense for schools and students in the unlikely event of a school shooting?

And if someone - say, of the liberal persuasion - were to make that comment about Atlanta or Dallas, you'd tell them how terrible a person they are.

But that's cool - Chicago, DC, and L.A. are full of worthless people who drag down and embarrass the country, right?

Cops don't get to play dress up and terrorize numerous innocent people during tornado drills.

For those unfamiliar with Chicagoland geography, Cary != Chicago. Cary is in the far Northwest Suburbs, in Kane County. Chicago's handgun ban is irrelevant there. Since it is in Illinois, no concealed carry of course.

Funny how none of the school shootings we hear about take place inside inner-city schools -- outside in the 'hood, yes, but Sandy Hook- or Columbine-style, not so much.

/remember hubbard woods 1988
//and the killing fields of englewood, north lawndale, and garfield park, to name but three bloodied chicago 'hoods

There may not have been many school fires but there are plenty of house fires and and fire safety is obviously smart to teach.

Drilling for school shootings, especially to the point of having full simulation with weapons discharging, is state-sponsored psychological warfare on our children. It's training them that their lives depend on total, unquestioning submission to authority. They'll grow up to be adults who are even more willing to give up freedom in the name of safety than the idiots before them.

Okay, I'll agree with you that fire safety is a smart thing to teach. But saying that this is state-sponsored psychological warfare on children is a bit extreme. It's finally accepting the reality that bad people exist and maybe we need to find a way to protect children that isn't just a sign explaining that the building full of children is a gun free zone. I'd rather see a program that teaches children how to defend themselves, educates them on the best ways to handle the unlikely event of a school shooting, even including the sounds of what a gun makes so children can know what that sound is and know not to let that sound cripple them if the unlikely event of a school shooting were to happen.

As for training children to submit to unquestioning authority now and watch them grow up into adults who are willing to give up freedom in the name of safety or whatever else, that's happening already. The first step to that was 'Zero Tolerance'. It continued every time a student was told that the teacher was always right and to never point out any error the teacher made. It's happening now in school where standardized testing is such an important event that schools before the standardized tests eliminate recess, and all subjects like PE to get more test prep into the school day even cutting down lunch from 25 or 30 minutes to 15 or in some schools, 15 minutes of absolute silent eating and the first time anyone says anything lunch is cancelled and the students are sent back to class whether or not they ate, for more test prep and for those who act like kids and not adult drones, they are diagnosed as ADHD and drugged into being a compliant student.

A friend I used to play Assassin with in high school had the cops pull their guns on him at a Taco Bell drive through when they saw one of these on the seat of his car:

There is no need what so ever to practice for a 'shooting emergency' because Chicago is a gun free city, and we all know that NO ONE has guns in a gun free city.
