I hope the Yankees find a way to void that motherfarker's contract and send his ass packing.  It's not like we'd miss him at this point.

Well he must have taken something to help him get all those strikeouts in the playoffs.

He's a pathetic cheat and he needs to be removed from the game of baseball.

Bud frowns on your shenanigans, A-Rod!

Indeed.  What a flabbergasting asshole.

I was at Camden Yards in 2009 for what was coincidentally A-Rod's first game in the majors since he admitted he had juiced. I have never been part of a crowd that booed anyone so harshly. I can barely imagine him making any kind of comeback at this point. He is not an elite player anymore and clearly cannot succeed without "help" in the postseason. Worse yet, he's recovering from surgery, is missing a great deal of playing time, and is on the wrong side of 35.

A-Roid, pls GTFO

Whatever last shred of credibility baseball had left, poof.

Still the only sport without a salary cap, right?

They have a luxury tax, but its set very high, and the teams that have to pay it have more money than God so they don't care.

From Wiki:

In 2011, the tax threshold is set at $178 million, an increase from the $170 million cap in 2010. Teams who exceed the threshold for the first time must pay 22.5% of the amount they are over, teams who are over for the second time must pay 30%, and teams that have been over more than twice must pay 40%.  The Yankees have been over every single year, the Red Sox 6 of 9 times, and the Angels and Tigers once, though you could add every single one of those three teams totals over all 9 years and it's less than the Yankees are over every single year.

I hope the Yankees try to void his contract and lose.  Other than rooting for my team, rooting against the Yankees is the reason I look forward to spring.

A-Rod does this and everyone calls for him to be banned from baseball. Ray Lewis does this and he's praised as one of the greatest ever to play the game

2013-01-29 03:05:39 PM
I honestly don't understand why any sports-related PED story is either surprising or interesting anymore. Maybe Lance because he so strongly denied it for so long, but other than that I don't see why this stuff isn't somewhat expected at this point.

And the moral outrage I see every time a steroid story comes out still strikes me as excessive. If there was something out there that wasn't legal but harmed only the person using it, made people better at their jobs (whatever that job may be), and if being caught wasn't very likely, I'm pretty sure a large percentage of people would do it. This isn't to say I'm completely ok with cheating, I just think that a lot of people would also cheat if presented with a similar choice.

2013-01-29 03:06:30 PM
You'd think some of these geniuses would use a fake identity, or have an assistant actually get prescribed the stuff. Paying $3k a month for steroids isn't gonna buy you confidentiality too. It's not like these doctors are on the up and up, just use your brothers' ID or something. Sheeet, did none of these players have fake IDs before they were 21? Especially the Latin guys, you played in the little league world series at 19, you don't remember how to fake your identity?

Well, it's gonna interesting. I doubt Cashman will say anything during this shiatstorm; he'll mind his Ps & Qs while he does his due dilligence and speak to the brass and to the lawyers. If the right clauses and language are there to insulate the Yanks from A-Roid's advisors going after the rest of the contract, they'll drop him in a heartbeat and potentially go after the money already paid out to him ala Vick.

Seriously, he weased his way out of that press conference so that the Yanks couldn't punish him in some fashion. If what those records say are true and he bought during his current contract, fark him.

Well, it seems they did use false identities, but the owner/"doctor"/"guy soon to be in prison" kept a decoder ring so he could more easily brag to potential new clients about who else in the sports world he was helping

Rumor has it he is going to be suspended for the first 3 months of the season, or until his hip heals.

Alex, if you're reading this: I know you're still owed $114 million, but if you give that up and retire right now, I'll pony up a full year of TF for you. It's totally worth it

Oh, I read the ESPN article earlier today which of course leaves out all the pertinent information, arseholes.

Still, make them prove it. McLovin got all the steriods, I swear

Ray lewis supposedly using deer antler spray to rehab quicker doesnt get a thread? Maybe im blind and missed it.

Also even if he had stayed healthy who thought signing arod to a 10 year contract that would end when he was about 40 was a good idea?

A known juicer gets caught juicing and it's the end of baseball's credibility? Ok then

remember everyone it was cool for Golden Age players to be hopped up on greenies but not cool for anyone who played in the last 20 years to use steroids or HGH or whatever

2013-01-29 03:16:24 PM
Cheating is as old as baseball itself. Bobby Mercer talked of hiding spare baseballs in the ivy in Wrigley. Gaylord Perry used spitballs. Neikro was caught on camera with a nail file. It's entertainment, that's all it was, that's all it ever will be. Bob Costas wants it to be so much more, but it isn't. It's a game, not a way of life.

You gotta wonder how many more little clinics like this are out there and whose names are on the lists.

2013-01-29 03:18:49 PM
Is there any evidence besides that the doctor appears to have written some names in his notebook? I mean yeah, he's probably guilty, but you can't condemn someone just because his name is written down.

Maybe the doctor was in love with Aroid and was just working on his new signature...Mrs Tony Rodriguez. Madame Dr. Tony Rod

I don't care that players use steroids.  I care that they lie about it.  Especially since we know way more players have juiced than have been publicly identified as doing such.  I think the only players that honestly would make me walk away from baseball for a while if it was outed that they used, would be Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

Of course, the Yankees and their fans have been wishing they could void A-Rod's contract since long before this news emerged. If this gives them legal grounds to do so, it's a gift from the baseball gods.

2013-01-29 03:21:34 PM
I also love that Gio and A-Rod both issued statements saying that the report is false pretty quickly. So either:

a) The notebooks aren't real
or
b) The David Ortiz excuse is now SOP for these things

Hell, I seriously enjoyed the late nineties homerun races. Im not going to get all high and mighty about roids when they all were doing it. Seems kind of like the playing field was pretty even amongst the power hitters.

The thing is, there's different kinds of sports cheating. The difference, I think, is in how fixable it is, how fast you can get back to playing ball cleanly and on a level playing field. Spare balls, spitballs, nail files, corked bats, those can all be removed from the field in five seconds, and that's why Gaylord Perry has a reputation as a lovable rascal instead of as a cheat. If the groundskeepers soaked the infield to deaden grounders, both teams have to play under those conditions. You can tell a guy with stuff on his hands to wipe his hands on his pants. You can't wipe steroids on your pants, and you can't be shooting up the other guys with the same stuff before you throw another pitch. You have to sit him out and wait for the steroids to cycle out, and that disrupts the flow of the game more than anything else.

Who cares about A-Rod. This is about the Padres legend and cultural phenom Cesar Carrillo. His possible involvement tears at the fabric of American society and shakes us all to the core.

People dope in sports. God doesn't administer the tests, so there are always going to be chemists and "doctors" a step or two ahead of whatever enforcement regimen there is in any sport. At this point I don't even care. These stories are more about finding additional reasons to dislike already dislikeable players than anything else.

I promise you your favorite team has at least a few people using PEDs. If you didn't know this, you probably didn't follow baseball that closely anyway.

/and before it starts, no, I don't like the Yankees

The other thing: drugs are only considered 'bad' if they're performance enhancers. Performance inhibitors, hell, go wild. Nobody's criticizing Dock Ellis for his no-hitter on LSD. If anything, they're impressed.

Well, think about it: Many of those who are eligible for the BBHoF who are (even remotely) accused of taking PEDs are now "Black Sox" thanks in no small part to Lance. If someone who swore he was clean and pointed to the tests he took as "proof", only to admit he did use when he was cornered, what's the word of some like Bonds or Clemens who could say the same worth? That's why I LOLed when Bonds' spokespeople came out with those comments after the vote was announced. Bonds will never see the HoF while he's still alive.

Anybody during that period who claims that they were clean are now guilty until proven otherwise, and they can thank Lance Armstrong for that.

Yeah well, tell that to Lyle Alzado. Oh, wait...
