Kinder GOP? Is that the opposite of Kinder Bueno?

This is pretty much a no-win situation for the Republicans.

2013-01-29 02:19:19 PM
Um...the better educated a person is, the more likely they are to vote Democratic.

2013-01-29 02:20:29 PM
um... isn't the opposite true? basically there are two kinds of republicans: the educated, ultra-wealthy elite, who govern the party but make up probably only two percent of its total, and the uneducated lower classes who vote republican out of fear and ignorance, making up the other 98 percent of the party (also known as its "base.")

i always thought this was why the GOP was so anti-education - because the more educated the masses become, the less likely they are to vote republican!

This. Not that I know where his district is, but this is going to have a lot less to do with Rep. Barletta than Boehner, Cantor, and Kevin McCarthy. If they do what they did with the fiscal cliff deal and Sandy relief, i.e. bring it to a vote despite heavy intra-party opposition, we might actually see something happen.

The Republican Party is not going to compete over who can give more social programs out. They will become Democrats because of the social programs they'll depend on.

Being able to call the cops without fear that they'll turn around and arrest you is now a "social program"?

Anyone who believes that they're going to win over the Latino vote is grossly mistaken

But no one disputes that Latinos, even just the ones here legally, will be a bigger and bigger part of the electorate. So is this guy basically forfeiting future elections?

I'm sure he considered that and has a policy fix for it. It probably involves lots of no knock raids and a battery of catapults at the border facing Mexico.

graduate degree on up is D

Whoever posted the flow chart of what you have to do to legally immigrate to the U.S. needs to post in this thread.

There are too many racists and bigots in the GOP (including their leadership) for them to ever get significant gains with minorities.

2013-01-29 02:54:56 PM
I heard a woman call Rush Limbaugh today and ask "Why don't we just tell new immigrants 'Here's your amnesty card, here's your social security card, get a job and start paying in'?" She theorized that immigrants may need welfare at first but then after getting jobs and seeing how much is taken out for taxes vote for the 'fiscally responsible' party.

Rush really didn't have an answer for that.

Sort of true, but a little more complicated than that. Democratic support comes from both the least well educated, and the most well educated in society. People who only finished or dropped out of high school lean Democratic. People with only a bachelor's degree lean Republican. But people with graduate degrees lean Democratic.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exilement. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide rejection; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep your ancient lands, you storied perp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost back to Mexico,
I hate having one lamp, give me more!"

I assume the response is "No one ever pulls themselves out of welfare. It is a black hole of dependence from which there is no return."

Actually, I think those with bachelor's degrees voted 51% for Mittens last time around. But to me that just confirms that a bachelor's is the new high school diploma.

Huh? About 1/3 of Americans go to college. But grads make up only a small percentage of those. Yet Democrats have almost a 2:1 registration advantage over Republicans. The US has about a 7% dropout rate. You would need to have almost a 50% dropout rate to make that come out.

Oh, GOP...always the last people to learn and consider.

You won't get a significant Hispanic vote until more Hispanics are assimilated into American culture. Then, like every other group of immigrants before, some of them will take a hard-right turn and fight the next group of immigrants.

True.  Income, race, region have a lot to do with it.  It's not easy to isolate any one factor.

In any event, the guy's an asshole for thinking the typical immigrant comes here with dreams of being a parasite.

True, but the GOP has a choice. They can concede defeat and work productively to try to get some of the credit for immigration reform or they can put their underware on their head. Which do you think they'll choose?

They voted for you years ago, and largely fell into your key demographics for education, conservative leanings, religious affiliation, family values, and fiscal views. You drove them away by going anti-immigrant, and by demeaning their culture, their family, and their history. You threaten their families with exile and imprisonment, and harass them because their skin color makes you think they might not be citizens.

Now they don't want to vote for you. You can fix it. It's not hard. But I doubt you'll realize your mistake, and you're going to lose the fastest growing demographic population in the country for the next generation. Good job, GOP!

To be fair, he said they wouldn't vote because the Republicans couldn't compete on social handouts. That he happened to drop the suggestion that they were likely not high-school graduates immediately before that was more of a "I can't possibly keep all my hate inside" moment, and less of a logical predecessor.

/it's best to assume statements by Republicans are never made to fit logical syllogisms

How about we vote for it because it's the right thing to do. Or alternatively, if you're going to vote against it, vote against it because you believe it's the wrong thing to do. Stop doing shiat for the sole purpose of winning elections.
