Myth: Occupy protestors are one single group of people who all have the same social status, personal hygiene and education levels.

Reality: biatches be different, yo.

2013-01-29 11:39:16 AM
Whether you're jobless, underemployed, professional, middle class, poor, under- or over-educated, if you dissent and fight the current conditions for yourself and those around you, you'll be told to stop. No one, according to such New York Post logic, is the right subject to revolt.

basically, yeah.  we aren't supposed to question our corporate masters.

2013-01-29 11:40:42 AM
Yeah, that myth should've been debunked 2 years ago when people actually cared about the Occupy protests.

2013-01-29 11:43:55 AM
the Who?

2013-01-29 11:45:25 AM
Who thought they were uneducated?  That's a pretty easy straw man to knock down.  And I don't know about the "poor" part, but I mean, I would assume if a good number of the protestors' gripe was a lack of employment opportunities with $200k in student loan debt for that BA in womyn's studies from a private liberal arts school or some such they probably are experiencing some cash flow issues.

actually, there's a lot of people with degrees in IT and manufacturing experience who can't get jobs anymore due to corporate offshoring of their jobs.

True, but that answer is much less snarky.  Things are tough all around.  Law school grads can't find work because, well, there's too damned many of them.

I wasn't aware occupy was still a thing.

Careful Weave... you're going to break their narrative with talk like that!

That's been like that since the 80's though.

Too many MBA's is the new hotness.

Well, yeah.  I bought my kids a box of Cap'n Crunch, and the free prize was a MBA degree.

/Not really.  I would never buy my kids that crap to eat.

So basically, the same crowd that goes to Burning Man, or  the US' "creative class".  You know, the ones who invent new stuff and make things like Apple and Google and are the only ones that continue to make the US an economic super-power rather than a vast source of factory-ready labor?

2013-01-29 12:38:53 PM
Hippies are never poor. The poor don't have time to sit around and protest, they have to work.

they've been going around collecting money, buying up people's debt and making it disappear.  thats' the sort of thing that corporate press types don't report on or want to talk about so....yeah.

Magorn: the US' "creative class".

That was the start of an interesting idea that even when Florida first wrote it he managed to take it completely off the rails.

Not if they, like, live off the land, man. Mother Earth gave us everything we need, we just need to like, come together and like, harvest it before the multinazional corpo-rapers defile it, man.

the corporate narrative on OWS is the following:

1. OWS failed. nothing good came of it, it was toxic waste.
2. OWS had no goals.  they just ran around and yelled a lot.
3. OWS protesters are smelly, uneducated hippies who just want to impose socalisms on the world.
4. OWS failed.
5. OWS failed.
6. OWS FAILED!  OMG WHY AREN"T YOU LISTENING!?
7. the cops didn't abuse OWS protesters.  no violation of protester civil rights has ever occurred.
8. if the cops DID abuse the OWS protesters, it was damn funny and should be made into a comedy skit on SNL.
9. do not question corporate news. they are always correct, and they say OWS failed.
10. always mock the OWS protesters. they are freaky, scary people who  use Ipads and say freaky scary iPad things. ignore and mock them, do not listen to them or engage them in any sort of conversation.  plus - iPads.

Rabble rabble rabble I want to be able to work hard professionally, afford to be able to buy a modest house, take the occasional vacation somewhere nice, send my kids to college, and eventually retire on my terms rabble rabble rabble. I guess I'm a patchouli-smelling dirty no good commie.

They are still smelly though, right?

tallguywithglasseson: Are they still doing that?

The one in my city has morphed into a homeless awareness and remedy campaign with splinter groups trying to get the city to lift its ban on sleeping in public parks.

They are going to try erecting some microhouses (those little 300 sqft jobs) to try and help alleviate some of the problem.

Without the intervention teams and accompanying money to try and further assist the chronically homeless, I'm not sure what they can really do.

2013-01-29 02:06:43 PM
It's only fair that the media focus on the 10% of the occupy movement to paint the rest of them badly. After all the media takes the 90% of the Tea Party movement to paint the other 10% badly.

2013-01-29 02:07:15 PM
where did they all go? oh, there they are, over there doing something on that cop car... wtf?

In Madison they're now working on buying an office building on Fordem Ave. (or Sherman Ave, can't remember) to convert to a homeless shelter. I think they're also working with Project Porchlight, a program that helps returning veterans increase marketable skills and cope with issues they face when returning from war. They're doing other things as well.

Was the cop standing there just letting him, or was it kind of a quick run-up-lower-pants-projectile-poop sort of thing?

\Or maybe it was a mad tussle with the man finally pooping after he grappled and pinned?

Nope. Occupy's goals were anarchist overthrow of the US government.

Oh, the GOP narrative. If you don't like the fact we are in the midst of extreme unsustainable income inequality, or that so many are wage slaves, our financial markets are rigged, and people are needlessly suffering when we are so resource rich then you must be an indolent moocher that likely hates America.

Myth: Occupy protestors are poor, smelly, uneducated hippies. Reality: Occupy protestors are middle-class, professional, well-educated hippies that can contribute to a political campaign.

Added for subby because yeah, if you're candidate "A" and calls these guys "uneducated hippies" and candidate "B" either says nothing or supports their actions, guess where their sweet, sweet campaign funds are headed.

2013-01-29 02:13:47 PM
Ah yes, OWS, the illustrious group that mostly faded away and didn't bring about the change they advocated.

2013-01-29 02:15:04 PM
If they were middle class what was up with all of the signs posting that they have X in student loans and no job? I would hope that middle class constitutes better than UI level income.

/or was there multiple movements and this one got conflated with OWS?

2013-01-29 02:15:29 PM
If OWS got any further than they did, they probably all would've been shot.

People with huge student loans took out those loans so they could go to school because they aspire to be middle class.

so a special event protest had a large number of professionals, ergo most people at Zuccotti for weeks were on vacation from their professional jobs?

you suck Salon, you suck NY Post

okay, if that is the new talking point.

but they are still smelly.

what are they doing lately?
