The tower's celebrated public observation deck, dubbed 'At The Top', is on the 124th floor.

Wow, they really splurged on their creative naming budget.

Look at all the unoccupied condo and office buildings.

You can tell that Dubai is still recovering from it's Real Estate bubble bursting.

That is quite impressive, it is still high resolution when you zoom in on the horizon.

What an ugly, gaudy place. What's the over/under before the desert reclaims it?

At a 45° angle, some of those views look like something out of Sim City.

Ugg. Resistance faltering against the urge to play a Sim City. The image put me in game mode heh. Pretty cool rendering.

On a side note I occasionally check out the Omni directional view of the Sistine Chapel Still impressive after all these years.  Some artsy naughty bits may be nsfw, though it should be covered under the classical art clause.  Peaceful music plays along with the viewing as well.

First sign I have lived in the SF Bay Area too long: The freeways, they are EMPTY! I don't care what time you take a picture of 880, it's going to have a crap-load of cars on it.

The burj is the the very definition of Donald Trump-style useless architecture built not out of demand, but out of a competitive-sports-type mentality.

They took public money midway through because there was not enough private investment. It is still hugely under-occupied, and the space is prohibitively expensive for the area it is in.

To top it all off, the area it is in HAS NO PUBLIC SEWAGE SYSTEM. All waste is carried out of the building by tanker trucks continually throughout the day.

See also: the 50+ shopping malls built throughout Asia simply for the bragging rights of being the largest in the world. Given that they do not have as strong a corporate retail tradition, most of these now sit largely vacant.

The bottom line? Good architects create buildings that contribute to good neighborhoods and cities. Shiatty architects create buildings completely out of scale with their surroundings so they can have something huge and penis shaped to put their names on.

Came to make this point.

And unlike when the pyramids were built - the human condition has advanced so that we FARKING KNOW BETTER than this. What is happening there goes beyond exploiting desperate people - it is actual slavery.

Meanwhile companies like Turner Construction still advertise that they had a hand in building it.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if it's a 10 hr flight from LA to London, how is it only 2 hrs from Seattle to Dubai?

It was designed by Americans (Adrian D. Smith) and the structural engineering was done by Americans (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill).

That photo freaks me out. I know in the movie he did those stunts but that's a movie with safety equipment. i don't see a harness or anything.

How many years/decades of oil is left in the ground over there that can sustain that city?

Also, I thought all the oil money usually went to a handful of Royal families. Who else is buying up the properties and office space there?

Some of the parts in the movie he wasn't wearing a harness either. He goes balls out. His craziness really isn't contained to religion, he may be certifiably insane.

They're trying to diversify. Major airline hub, major financial services hub now for the region. The goal is for multinational companies to have their Middle East regional HQ there. Whether that will work is yet to be seen.

The execs at Turner knew as much as SOM. The only people that actually saw it were low level engineers on-site - and it isn't like they can do anything about it. You would think that Americans would be able to better pick-up on the historical similarity of importing a massive disposable manual labor workforce from another continent and working them nearly to death with no way to ascend or escape.

Well theres that and basic treatment of the workers, which to anyone overseeing the site should have immediately raised red flags. Especially to the Americans brought over. And about "low level engineers," I don't know if you simply say that only 20 somethings were running the biggest project in the world. There had to of been many onsite supers with a high level mgmt type for client interaction. I walked a 4 story building that Turner was doing in Jersey, and they had at least 5 engineers and a guy who was only a level below a regional manager.

2013-01-29 03:08:11 PM
From the site, I don't really see any density in land use. You could have built a low rise campus with same number of square feet for 1/10 the cost.

Are the pyramids supposed to be relevant here? They were huge religious structures, as well as giant ego boosting buildings. I think the Burj is just an ego booster.

Sure would be a damn shame if a plane or something like that slammed into it.

Yeah... damn shame...
